GOTM 73 Pre-Game Discussion

OK, my head would definitely fall off if not attached! Here is the pre-game discussion thread, with only a few hours to go. I have the saves to set up tonight; I will extend the submittal period by 1 day so if players wish to exhibit restraint and delay their start a day to participate in discussions, they will still get 30 days to play.

Ramped up difficulty a level to Regent. The settings will provide more land than a standard Continents setting, but there are 9 AI's and lots more tundra than normal as well, so perhaps not as much space as one would think. Have fun!

Civilization: Egypt
Rivals: 9
Barbarians: Roaming
Difficulty: Regent
Land Form: Contintents, 60% ocean, Standard map.
Geology: 4 billion years old, Cool, Normal

And we're standing on a BG. What's that 2E, Incense?

I think I'll walk 1NE. Flood Plains are good and also an RCP3 city in the river delta.

If Japan isn't in, then research The Wheel for the Chariots. Golden Age in Despotism means mining the Grass, not the Bonus Grass.

I definitely see wheat W-NW. Settling NE will lose this! N looks tempting but is less central. Would settling E be on the river?
An interesting start. Sure am looking forwards to this game!

That's definitely Wheat W-NW like megistatos says. Settling 1N is tempting, but the general lack of shields will likely not make a 4-turner possible regardless. Hmm...

I'm always amazed at the fog-gazers... I can never see anything .

I think we have enough shields for a 4-turner from size 5-7 if we move off the BG.

You'll just have to trust us Chamnix!(though I'm not convinced about Piu Freddo's Incense)

About the settler factory- there's enough food N, but production seems more problematic. Problem is that there might be no forest to work as city grows- a hill might have to be mined to get the factory going.

But maybe a better strategy would be to crank out chariots in the capital, and forget about the 4 turner.

Indeed, the floods and the wheat are for definite, but I wonder if the artefact in the east is the start of another river. I'll have to see if I can find a start where we had incense for comparison.
If settling north, then mining some of the dry land to our northwest will be a shade faster than mining a hill. It looks like plains, and possibly some desert between the plains and the floods.

Ah, now I understand what you're talking about in the east. No, that's definitely a river, not incense.

If there's wheat westward then settling on the hill W may be better than going for the floodplains NE, assuming that we're going to build the FP on a central city nearby and jump the capital later.

Goal: who knows? I still lack a diplo award, but the level is low and there won't be any useful bartering with the AS past a certain point, so the military way is once again the most probable.

I'm a bit worried about this tundra- could it be close despite there being desert nearby?

Regardless, I think I'll settle one North and go for the four turner>

Looks like jungle near the mountain. I think I will move 1 N to settle, which allows working the FP tiles right away. With the Industrious bonus, working those hills shouldn't be too far off. Looks interesting enough to play this one.

I'm not convinced about Piu Freddo's Incense

Me neither! I'm just like Chamnix in this respect. Amazed.

Why forget about the four-turner? Use the Chariot(s) to start the Golden Age, and production will be no problem any more. If you have mined your Grassland tiles in the mean time.

Impressive. Five settlers during Golden Age. Six if you have a good timing (starting the first settler two turns before GA).
Maybe six settlers and four warriors. At least little waste of shields.

Maybe this would be appropriate to boost a slow start. :hmm:
