News: TSG54 Announcement

Hmm, I haven't done one of these for a few months, but that start looks so tasty that I'm going to have to do it. Been awhile since I've played Pacal, I'll have to remember the order for taking GPs.

Think I'm finally gonna get some time to give this a shot this weekend. Looking forward to it.

Question: is messenger of the gods pantheon worth it in the long run? +2 science per city even with bonuses doesn't seem like it would make a huge difference in the late game, and won't really have trade routes in the beginning... I probably won't go super wide...

Nice starting spot, trying to decide whether to try to rush GL, might be possible at this difficulty, risky though. Then delaying expansion til NC is done... Worth it??

Ahh these GOTMs are going to drive me crazy! :crazyeye: What am I getting myself into?

Love the starting position, couldnt ask for more for a first GOTM. Looking forward to discussing and marching to victory. Pacal FTW!

Quick question I just toss the save file in the civ5 save folder then im good to go. I dont need to download anything else do I? Then when im finished I use the uploader to submit it correct? Probaley a dumb question, but want to make sure i get it right the first time.

Welcome to GotM! Yes, just drop it into the saves folder and play. We also notify in the announcements what DLCs and versions are required to play. This one is only vanilla and GnK but we have done a few DLC GotMs so be on the lookout if you dont own them.

Thanks for the heads up Hammer Rabbi about the dlc. I will download it all tonight. Also i appreciate the warm welcome and look forward to playing many more Gotm with the community here.

If you dont own GnK then yes, you will need that. But otherwise you dont need to rush the others unless you were planning on getting them anyway. Thanks and good luck!

Quick question for you Hammer Rabbi. When you take a screenshot using steams camera does it go to the loading screen and start your same turn over again?

No, it doesnt involve any game interrupts or replaying. The steam screenshots are put into a folder in steam's cloud. going to the steam window in mid-game doesnt exit the game or take you to a load screen or anything. if you hit shift+tab after taking your steam screenshot it will bring up the steam options, like posting to facebook or saving it to the cloud, etc. usually taking a screenie with steam will bring it up anyway but if it doesnt use shift+tab. it's what takes you between steam and any game for things like chatting and screenies. you can then go through a few more hoops to actually save it to your hard drive.

instead, i prefer to use the regular PrtScn button. It will save to your civ5 screenshots folder. plus, if you can do a little multitasking while the game is up, you can open some software and paste it into a saveable format if you dont feel like going into the screenshots folder or exiting the game. i use a free photo editing software to do any file changes (typically to change it to a jpeg for posting here and to make the file size smaller). i use paint.net, but really there are tons of free ones to do the job easily.

after that, posting here is fairly simple. in CFC's FAQ there is an explanation for how the interface works. after you do it a time or two it becomes easy. it works the same for pics and saves for the public forums. uploading the saves for GotM are a little different but only for the results function that AlanH created to check the saves.

steam's method might work for some just as easy but the first few times i tried it i found it cumbersome so i went with old habits, haha. some others might come in to correct a thing or two about steam's way of doing it since i abandoned that method some time ago. hope this helps.

The steam screenshots automatically save to your hard drive in a good format for uploading. Every screenshot I've uploading from Civ 5 has been from the Steam screenshot folder without having to mess with anything else.

When you take screenshots with Steam, the screenshot manager will automatically pop-up when you exit the game. At this point just click the "Show on Disk" button in the lower left and it will bring up the folder they're stored in with "My Computer".

Now, when you're ready to upload the screenshots to the forums, just direct the browse feature of the uploader to that location on your hard drive.

okay, thats good. i had a hard time figuring out the steam interface to find it on my hard drive when i first tried it. it still only takes me about 2 minutes my way but i figured it had to be easier than i remembered. thanks, Monthar.

I think Masadon is running into the problem that the default hotkey for Steam screenshots (F12) is also the Civ5 hotkey for Quickload. I don't think you can change the Civ5 behavior, but you can rebind the Steam hotkey to use something like Alt+F12 instead.

Unfortunately, the Civ5 behavior isn't well-documented. Worse, since GOTM disallows reloading, this will probably disqualify Masadon's game from submission – unless the staff allows it under the crash exception, since this is arguably a game bug.

Thanks for pointing that out, BWS. I knew there was something else I meant to mention.

I wanted to thank everyone for the quick responses and the help.
@BWS- You hit the nail on the head, that is precisely what happen. I didnt realize that F12 was the hotkey for reload as i never use hotkeys. Explains everything. I hope i dont get disqualifed as im having a blast and a great game, but I wouldnt blame them if it happens. Nothing important was going on at the time.

@Hammer Rabbi- Appreciate all the help you have been giving me. This is a great community i can tell already. With people like you around it should stay that way and attract more. Im going to switch that hotkey asap lol.

@Monthar- So what your saying is if i use the steam screenshots there already in a jpeg format excellent. Also appreciate your help :D

Yes, they're already in .jpg format. However, the forums here do support several image file formats. Just use the "Go Advanced" button when posted and you'll see the "Manage Attachments" button in the in the "Additional Options" section below the submit and review buttons.

If you want the full image in the post instead of having it pop-up a smaller version, after you've uploaded the filed, just right click the link for and select copy link location. It'll be down near that "Manage Attachments" button. Then you can click the "Insert Image" icon above the text field and paste that link location into it. But be warned, you'll need to put the image inside spoiler tags because they tend to be a lot wider than the normal forum posts.

Edit: Here's an example of a Steam screenshot from my post in the TSG29 Game In Progress thread.

Glad you walked me thru it like that, i could see that taking me a while to figure out. Sounds pretty straight forward.

Got another question for you. When playing the GOTM should i only use the original save file and overwrite it? Our should i make another seperate file? I also like to quick save alot just in case something happens like the other night when the power went out, is this breaking the GOTM rules?

You are allowed to create all the saves you wish, as long as you play from the one you made last. You may also overwrite them if you wish, doesn't really matter. If you have autosaves set to 1 turn, then it shouldn't really matter very much. :)
