News: TSG73 Announcement

ahh, horrible start :) I am still on the previos gotm, as I dont really have time to play civ alone.

Hm, im still not sure, if understood it right. You geht the luxuries from Cities on other land masses, ok. But they can be built on the same land mass, right? So if I find a big enough island separated from the one on which I founded my capital and I found 3 cities on that one, I'll get the 3x2 Luxuries, right?

No, each of the 3 cities have to be on a landmass you don't have any other cities on. So putting 3 cities on a large island that is not the same landmass as your capital will only give you the luxury in the first one you built on that island.

Hmmm. Jungles can be helpful in a long game with University science. But tough for a capital. I'll plan for conquests not in the ancient era; there's just no production here. Thinking of settling on the hill NW of the starting position -- its production will be the same as if I were using the animals SE of the start, but once borders expands should be better off.

Argh! Tried to load this but it crashes completely. Do I need anything special for this one? (I've got BNW and all the available packs but am on a Mac if that makes a difference?)

My guess is that your version is either not up to date or the patch has not hit yet?

To play this, you must have Civ5 Brave New World version 1.0.3.142.

Can a TSG made in BNW be played in G&K without BNW?

If so, is it valid to submit?

dV

addendum: I see lief's start threads say BNW is required, and Hammer's don't mention that (maybe it is implied).

I never thought of it as implied since it was created with BNW, but yes, it is necessary to own BNW to play this (and necessary to own GnK too, but you saw that was explicitly mentioned). I think if you tried to load the save it would say you are missing the expansion pack and stop the save from loading.

But if you have patience there will be several holiday sales on Steam and other gaming websites and a likelihood of at least 25%-50% off for BNW if you want to pick it up. You can always play these GotMs any time you want but the only hindrance is the submission deadline.

Hi dV,

HR is correct, you must have BNW. It would be like trying to play a BtS save in Warlords, ain't gonna happen. :nono:
:)

Not sure what it is you must do? We have found old saves play well on newer version of the software, although they use the new rules in game play the updates bring. If your version of G&K is up to date, it should be the same version after you update to BNW, should you wish to do that?

Dual installs are sort of the norm because in the newer versions, you can choose which components of Civ5 you wish to use by clicking on the dlc button in the main menu. The game will then configure the dll for which dlc or expansion you wish to use.

Not to hijack the thread, but just to let you know that you can choose which version you wish to play.

I suppose dual installs in steam are not an option ...

I have things to finish in G&K before I upgrade.

dV

There is no need for dual installs with Civ 5, because you can disable any expansion or DLC from the in game menu at any time. Any save created without one of the expansions or DLCs you have installed will automatically disable it when you load the save. So, there is no need to postpone upgrading to finish your G&K games.

It's really too bad that they introduced yet another Iron-requiring UU in BNW. It's bad enough that melee are inferior to ranged, and have been forever, so they should have known better. But to make it require Ironworking just makes a bad idea worse. Why would anyone invest in Ironworking when Construction is just so much better? I mean, I do, but I'm somewhat of a glutton for punishment. I also open Honor, so yeah. :P

That start position makes me want to vomit, but maybe I'll try it and see if I can move to a good spot. No rerolls, but if I can't find a good spot I'm totally going to ragequit.;)

Also, Kris Swordsmen aren't awful. Teching Ironworking is what's awful. Requiring Iron is awful. But they're not bad. You figure out what promotions they have, and the ones with bad promotions are used for fodder to keep your CBs firing, and the good ones are incredibly superior versions of swordsmen... what's not to like?
