Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 73
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the Seventy-third game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of features in Civilization 5 Brave New World to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

In this game, the designated VC is Domination. All VCs are enabled but results will be published by fastest Domination victory turn.

In this game you will play as Indonesia and lead the Indonesian Empire to victory. It's a standard-sized mystery map played at King difficulty and at standard pace. Domination is the designated VC for this game, all victory conditions are enabled. You will have until December 15th to complete the game and submit.

Civ V BNW - TSG73 Game Settings:
Playable Civ: - Gajah Mada - Indonesia
Number of AI Opponents: 7
Number of City-States: 16
Map type: Mystery
Map Size: Standard
Difficulty Level: King
Game pace: Standard
Game options: Quick Combat and Quick Movement are enabled. (You may turn them off using the game options menu at any time during gameplay.)
Game Version: This game was created in Civ5 Brave New World version 1.0.3.142. NO DLC are required for this game but the Gods and Kings expansion is required.

In this game, you will be playing as Gajah Mada, you possess Spice Islanders. The first 3 cities founded on continents other than where Indonesia started each provide 2 unique Luxury Resources (and can never be razed).

You can train the Kris Swordsman, a Classical Era melee unit that has a mystical weapon whose abilities will be discovered the first time it is used in combat. May only be build by Indonesia.

You can also build the Candi, a Unique Indonesian Garden replacement. It grants +25% Great People generation in the City it was built in, and +2 Faith for each World Religion that has at least 1 follower in the city. Unlike the Garden the Candi does not have to be built next to a River or Lake.

This is where you will start:

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots and videos.

After Action Report thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! , We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the two week period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after two weeks, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note, you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs for a month and ends Sunday, 15 December 2013.

The Save can be found here.

Similarly to previous game, moving mouse over map type in menu shows that it is a continent map. Probably better if it would be stated in the game announcement as Mystery map is not really mystery :)

Well, I don't think everyone scrolls over each icon before starting their game so it certainly is no longer a mystery now that you've told us. In the future it would be appreciated if you wouldn't announce this info to everyone. Yes, some know about this bug and some don't. And some of them voluntarily choose to not use the info to keep the mystery aspect alive.

For clarification does "other continents" include tiny islands, or do they have to be a certain size?

Yes, any land mass that you haven't already built a city on. However, don't settle one o those 3 spice cities on top of any other resource as the unique luxury will replace it. So if it is one of those 1 tile islands that has iron, you'll lose the iron if you settle on it.

As you wish. Probably I wouldn't scroll, but I did it to check if this bug still exists. I decided to write it here because of the decision that was made for TSG72:
It was a mystery map until the update when it showed the map type in a mouse over. Decided it was more fair to just state it than have some think it was mystery while others moused over and saw the real map type, seemed like an unfair advantage.
:)

I'll confess to always starting a new map if I get an awful start spot like this. How long is it worth exploring for a better option? Or should you just bite the bullet?

Same here. King level is ok for me, but I don't want to spend too long exploring. Maybe try and settle on turn 5 at latest? Would prefer to settle in 2-3 turns.

Are the unique Lux resources provided as long as the continent isn't shared with the Capital? Or does each city need to be on a distinct continent for UA to kick in?

The first 3 cities, after the capital must all be on their own land mass and be the first city you own on that land mass to create the unique luxury. That land mass can be a continent or a 1 tile island.

Err... are really only the first 3 cities eligible or did you mean "the first 3 on different landmasses will get the bonus resource"(even if they were you 20th city in total?).

Also: What about captured cities? Or is it only self found cities?

Oh no! Flat Jungle start!

Love it.

With the break in the jungle, there are three jungle hills. With the unique unit, you will be taking that tech anyways in order to find iron, and also it will help if there are luxuries in the jungle. Lots of work, but i may stick to the jungle, maybe settle on the hill, but, I am hoping to be the aggressor. I'm still not a keen domination player.

Yes, the first 3 on different land masses even if they aren't the first 3 cities you've built after the capital. Only self founded cities, captured cities don't get the resource.

The game text is a bit misleading then. 'continents other than where Indonesia started' That implies bonus should be when city does not share continent with Capital versus being one its own unique continent.

Unless there's Iron or a lux under that Jungle, I just leave it on the Hills. It's not worth the time to chop it down.

Kris Swordsmen are awful. Maybe if they could be built with Bronze Working but as they are currently I don't think I will be building any. Neat idea but bad execution by Firaxis. I wish Samurai had the random mystical blade schtick.

Kris Swordsmen are awful.

This. The negative promotion is just stupid. I swore I'd never role Indonesia again, but I suppose I will for this TSG. But I guess I'll do so without wasting valuable hammers on that roulette mini-game.
