When a unit is active, selecting an auto-goto point with the mouse, or pressing "5" on the numpad, then pressing 1-4, 6-9 on the numpad would cause the unit(s) to face in that direction.

i.e., when you select (but still have the mouse button pressed) a tile to the north, the unit(s) will face to the north. Move it south, and they face south. Or, with the numpad, hold "5", then 8 for north, and they face north - 2 for south, and they face south.

The units are merely representative, as are all other graphics. It really shouldn't matter, and I see no reason why this would be implemented anyway.

Because it would be easy to implement and could make for nice screen shots...

It would serve a better purpose if you could flank an enemy by turning to his side and thus have a attack bonus or something...other than that what warp said

Flanking is a very nice feature indeed :)
But the aesthetic feature Chieftess proposes is nifty too, especially if it can be done in the editor, so you can have an army face the direction of the enemy :)
