I always thought of it this way:

Pirates are Libertarians "Every man for himself"
Ninjas are Communists "Sacrifice for the good of the order"

But you have to remember that they are also stereotypes - and communist/collectivist stereotypes are evil while freebooting anarchist types are cool. Pirates win then, and they also fight global warming.

Actually ninjas still do exist. Theyre just that stealthy. As a matter of fact, you know your next door neighbor? Hes a ninja. You know your wife/girlfriend? shes a ninja too. And you dog? ninja. About 50% of the people in an average persons life are ninjas.
