.. or at least that's what the sales for 2007 seem to indicate.

Which I think is a bit surprising, considering that a lot of people considered the "strange" new controllers to be a risky move. There was a lot of talk about Nintendo losing market share to Sony and especially Microsoft.

Well, why are the DS and the Wii so successful? What is driving this new charge?

People who wouldn't normally touch a video game.

Backwards compadility with older games (You can play older SNES games on a Wii) and there are also Homebrew games and programs for the DS without modifying the firmware (unlike PSP where you have to)

Nintendo has opened up the market to aim at anyone who jst wants to have some fun, rather than a teenager/20-something who wants to shoot stuff on uber-realistic graphics.

The Nintendo DS advert in the UK is done by Nicole Kidman - middle aged and female. Normally people in that category would be buying a console for their teenage son instead.

The Wii is similar - it's supposed to be social and is more of a family console. Other consoles, really, are just for one person.

The Xbox360 was released in 2005, yet its sales this year still [edit: approached] those of the Wii. And while there may have been a lot of DS sales, it's a portable system, remember.

Then again, maybe I'm just bitter because I haven't been able to get a Wii for myself. :p

The price, My aunt bought a Wii for her daughters who are 8 and 9. More kidish games ( doesn't mean I don't digem thou) and the price - it's 250.

I am for 550 (tower only) I can build a new computer that will run every pc game but, crysis. Do you think I would plop down 400 for a PS3 with 60 dollar games?

...... yeah. But, Lets say I am not really into console games out side of playing with other people in the living room and I don't make to much (which I don't ... thats why I don't have one) and wanted a console for the whole family.

Wii is the way to go. .... hell even my grandma gets down on Wii tennis. It's well established that she is the family champion atm actually

These comments nailed it.

We're witnessing whole new rise of video games almost to all ages.

It's all same old entertainment industry with new touch and now for everyone.

They're significantly cheaper. It's a much better console for "social gaming"(at least in my opinion) than the others. Nintendo has never been cutting edge graphically, but they prove people are still willing to play a game for the gameplay instead of just games that use up 90% of your system to render shadows(at least if the price is right).

Novelty. The games, by and large, are unsatisfactory. The only thing they seem to bring to the table is additional minigames. What they're doing is taking WarioWare and fusing it with the original game concept. Of course, Zelda and Mario are notable exceptions.

I was moderately excited too, but from what I've played...they're all about the new novel gimmick, and not so much longetivity or honestly good games.

I beg to differ...I can play Wii sports forever.

It's entertaining...but they're minigames. If you like minigames, great. Unfortunately, they won't hold me down forever. Powerful storyline, creative scenarios and situations, and good multiplayer help extend longetivity.

Your thinking of the Era of the Gamecube, PS2 and Xbox.. the Wii has NEVER been behind in sales since it was launched (except week blips as the elite packages were brough out, and thw Wii sold so much it couldnt sell any more

They add something NEW to gaming. The PS3 and Xbox360 offer nothing but flashy graphics.

Go play Final Fantasy then..

oh wait, the next ones coming out on the Wii

Complete and total failure to comprehend what I meant. Brownie points to you.

Girls love it, and in turn, it helps me get girls.

Woman love the Wii. Before the wii I always had to come up with some "excuse/reason" to get a girl to come over to my place. But the Wii is a great reason to use to invite a girl over.

And it's named the Wii, the double meaning works well.

If it really was about novelty, why hasn't there been this much excitement about previous novel systems?

Ok, forgive, me.. name me ONE game that hits all those.

Storyline Vs Multiplayer is the biggest problem i see, How many multiplayer games bother with a story that isn't one of many gaming cliches?

People raving about Mario Galaxy are lying I guess.

Like VR, PowerGlove and the like? Most have failed because they were terribly executed, or didn't get decent game developers on-board.

Wii excells because the controller works so damn well. For example on the most basic game Wii Sports.. a gamer looks at it to try and work out how to flick it or position it in a certain way to "crack" the motion sensitivity..

you try, and then realise you get strikes, hit the ball sweeter, and swing the bat all greater results when trying to play as if its RL.
