No metals, no horses

What if the AI is better when? Also, Asperger are you making fun of me? It's not funny, you know.

you misinterpret "cats", that's funny for me, quite innocent i think, everybody misinterpret words everyday all the time, it's called "communication":)

People are afraid that stronger civ's will extort money and techs from you but if you give them what they want they will become your friends and can be very useful for you. Many times in my games a strong civ demands me a tech, i give in, he gets pleased, so i ask him his money and most of times they will give it to me. Then they attack someone else.

All your base are belong to catapults.

And giving in to a powerful civ's demands so that they like you can indeed be a very useful tactic.

Well it works if you play on, like, settler.

I would like to thank everyone for help. The game went well. I have defended with archers, made friend with Izzy (I adopted her hinduism), fortified a few archers on Monty's only iron hill, pillaged it, and kept denying him iron. I also beelined to construction, build cats, took Monty's city with iron...

Now Monty's gone, and it's back to normal game.

An alternative might be for you to try to hold out for crossbowmen with longbows, but I'm not sure if that's possible: Montezuma will attack you during the Iron Age.

I wouldn't worry about horses too much. Stick to defense and horde yourself down with archers. If you really must have it then beeline to construction and get some cats as everyone said.

Mass archers onto the stack of cats. If you're having problems with cavalry and you're sure this spot is the only spot that has horses, then take it and pull back. Let them take it over and rinse and repeat. You'll get some insanely powerfull troops as well as getting rid of one of your problems. You could also raze the city after it's captured, rush a settler over to a similar spot, grab the horses and hold down the fort.

Only attack is it's a must though. From the sounds of it, you seem to be in a pretty tight spot and you should probably wait untill gunpowder to start any sort of offensive. Untill then, get on a select few peoples good side and plow through your enemies. Use circle diplomacy. If you don't know what that is, imagine circular logic except done on the worlds best leaders.
