RIP Peter Falk. Good actor, seemed like a nice guy. Columbo was a great show.

Actor Peter Falk, known to millions as the rumpled star of television crime drama "Columbo," has died, KTLA.com reports. The actor was 83.

He reportedly was suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

Falk first played Lieutenant Columbo (his first name was never clearly announced, though one badge image lists it as "Frank") in a 1968 TV movie. Its popularity led to a second film and then to the series, which ran from 1971 to 1978. Even after the show was canceled, Falk would play the laid-back detective in "Columbo" TV movies.

"He looks like a flood victim," Falk once said of his famous character. "You feel sorry for him. He appears to be seeing nothing, but he's seeing everything. Underneath his dishevelment, a good mind is at work."

Columbo's trademark was an ancient raincoat Falk had once bought for himself. After 25 years on television, the coat became so tattered it had to be replaced.

Besides the Columbo series and the Princess Bride, I also love Murder By Death. RIP.

An another thing...

It has to be said that he was not the most versatile actor in the world, but he was brilliant at what he did, and there are many anecdotes to the effect that he was a very kind and thoughtful man. Columbo is one of the all-time great TV characters.

When I was teaching undergraduates introductory philosophy as a postgraduate I tried to illustrate Socratic irony by comparing it to Columbo. (It's never quite clear whether Socrates is serious when he claims not to know anything and to be just asking a few questions to clear things up in his own mind - just like it's never quite clear whether Columbo is genuinely curious when he asks the suspect things, or whether he knows right from the start that they're guilty.) I was quite shocked to find that none of the students had ever heard of Columbo, making my brilliant illustration rather less useful, and also making me feel very old.

Columbo was one of my favourite shows when I was young

I will miss him

He was also great in The Great Race with Tony Curtis & Jack Lemmon

Pffft. In today's media age the young'uns have no excuse not to learn the classics.

RIP Peter.

O Rly? How many TV programs from the 50's or the 60's can you name other than Bewitched and Batman? For us (those born in the 80's), the 70's are pretty close so we get to know pop culture from the 70's, this, however, doesn't apply to those born in the 90's.
