I'm playing my first game and its been REAL interesting so far, getting better continuously...until Tokugawa declared war on me!! I spent so long building my empire, and i had a good amountt of land! He kept insisting i stop trading with the germans, i dont know why, he was like that from the beginning!!! And i thought it was unlikely he would declare war on ME so i didnt build much of a miltary...but he did, and it seems he had the resources to take over all my cities until i had only 1 left, where he asked for peace. Naturally i acqueisced.

Man i am SO angry at the son of a &%*!! I swear on my populace that i will develop nuclear weapons and wipe that scum bug off the face of the planet!! What is his problem?!! I had worked so hard on that empire. I kept my population quite happy, some cities were doing great. Now its all gone!

couple questions: Why did he develop a disliking to my deals with germany?
When your playing, do you develop a good size army? Is everyone else likely to attack you if they see they could win?

Although he really annoyed me.....this game is awesome!!!! I'm glad i stuck with it!

Y'know whats funny? I'm the Americans and Japan declared war on me first....and then I am gonna develop nukes and destroy Tokugawa.....history repeats itself even in computer games! ;)

well for one thing toku declares war alot and 2 if you dont have enough of an army ( check the power graph;) ) they will spontaneously attack

Yes ....and Yes. Build up an army. Go to F9, look at the power rating. If you a re a lot lowwer than the AIs. they will probably attack you.

tokugawa is a prat. It's best to kill him if you can. When you mouse over the name Tokugawa on the screen, you'll see some green points+ and some red pooints-. The idea is to learn to manipulate these dipomacy merit/demerits to your advantage. Toku cant be dealt with so try another leader. You get + points for having the same religion, trading, not trading with their enemies...

similar civics, you havent discovered civics yet have you? lots to learn,

Yes it is. Keep going.

A good, modern army is crucial to survival. Even the most peaceful AI civ will attack you if you're woefully weak in comparison, and to a warmonger like Tokugawa, you're just a tastly little morsel asking to get chewed up and spat out.

Since you're still beginning, here are a couple of fairly simple ways to accomplish this.

At the beginning of the game, try to alternate everything you do between "civilian" and "military" (though they are interrelated, but I'm trying to keep things simple). So, for example, research a "military" technology like Bronze Working. When that's done, go after a "civilian" tech like Agriculture. And so on. Do the same for your city builds: a military build (a unit or barracks) is followed by a civilian build (granary, library).

That works for the opening. Eventually you want to specialize your cities. There are whole threads devoted to this topic. The idea is that each city can then focus on just doing a certain type of build; science cities just build libraries, monasteries, and universities, while a military city just builds barracks and units. This also means you need to tailor the tile improvements for each type of city accordingly: a production/military city works more "hammer" tiles (mines, mostly), while a science city works more commerce tiles (cottages). Obviously, you'll usually select how to specialize the city based upon its workable tiles and resources, but you can also manipulate this a little with how you improve the tiles.

I'm oversimplifying it (I really shouldn't be calling it a "science city", for example), but you'll get the idea. THIS THREAD in the Strategy Articles sub-forum describes city specialization in detail. If you don't want to get wiped off the map again, I highly suggest you read it. ;)

Please correct me if I'm wrong here...

I've found Japan to be (as is historically accurate) isolationist. They will not trade with anybody under practically any circumstance. As trading between other nations weakens his position, he'd probably then be more inclined to dislike you if you trade with others.
Plus the obvious: he's built to be a warmongerer and acts accordingly.

Welcome to Civilization, grasshopper. You have learned the first important lesson: never turn your back on Japan. ;)

Soon you will discover one of the great pleasures of Civ4 -- the sweet, tasty revenge when you crush Tokugawa's civilization. If not in this game, the next one. And the next one. And the next. And the next. :ar15: [pissed]

Maybe there should be (or is there already?) a common thread called "The psychology of Civ leaders and how to deal with them" :D

there is
it's an article giving the personality matrix of every leader.
A nice xls file with hundreds of values for each leader :scan:

I looked at it, and now i think it's much more fun to play games and discover those things

As for Toku demanding you cancel deals with Germany this only happens when Germany is their worst enemy as far as I know. The way you can tell what civs are enemies is by going to the diplo screen and clicking on one of the leaders, then hovering your mouse over the other leaders. This will tell you how much each leader likes the one you have selected. If they are "annoyed' or worse then they are considered enemies. But I think only the civ that the AI dislikes the most is considered to be the "worst" enemy.

And yeah, as others have stated, certain civs are more likely to declare war on you early. Montezuma, Tokugawa, Alexander and Genghis Khan seem to be the most likely to do so in my experience. So if you are their neighbor you should either build more military or make sure you're really good friends.

I know how you feel. I have similar feelings towards Shaka of the Zulu, who ruined a game for much like the Japs have for you. He crossed the entire game map (literally, and I always play Huge maps) just to destroy me for no reason. In my current game, though, (playing as Persia, Cyrus), after sharing a border with Shaka for much of the game, he finally declared war on me (the idiot. I had cavalry, his best units were longbowmen and a handful of pikemen).

Sweet revenge! I captured half his civ with just 6 divisions of Cavalry and some Grenadiers and Riflemen as garrisons before he surrendered :)
