Noble help?

I knew about F4 for techs, but I didn't know about clicking each leader. You learn something new every post, don't you?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought a Great Engineer could only be used to rush a building, not a spaceship part. I'm tempted to research fusion next, in order to get the GE and rush either the Space Elevator or the 3 Gorges Dam.

space elevator is what I meant. sorry, not too clear.

you only need your low production cities for ss-cassings when your high production cities are busy

OK, I see. Yes, there's no need to use the low-production cities unless you're trying to build the entire spaceship all at the same time. I'm still hoping a GE will pop up in my capital just in time to get the SE finished.

Lucy: it's open ocean in my case, but I worked out a compromise involving a fleet of destroyers and submarines spaced out at regular intervals so that every part of the crossing is visible. Of course, this is only of value if you're prepared to attack opponents' vessels (which, in my case, I was not, since I didn't want to undertake a war at the same time as getting started on the spaceship - though I'm sure more experienced players would take the gamble).

I strongly disagree that it's only of value if you're prepared to attack. A warning can be extremely valuable - and might even give you enough time to scramble the boats to thwart a landing. And of course, if you get DoWed, it's irrelevant whether you want to undertake the war - you've got to defend yourself. I've just been amazed by the deterrent power of a good navy in some recent games. It's so much easier to drown mech infantry than to fight them off on land.

Of course, the navy might end up going unused. Or, its main use might just be deterring a potential invasion. I think they're usually worth it, though.

Lucy: yes, you're right, I phrased it badly.

Anyway, I'm proud to report a success! I won the Space Race in 1991. Only came out equivalent to Louis XVI, but never mind - my first victory on Noble! I got the Space Elevator, even though a lot of other civs had Robotics, and I got the Three Gorges Dam. Just to be on the safe side, I sent a couple of spies over to the other continent and blasted some mines from each of my opponents. But I think I would have won anyway.

The main advantage was in starting out with a lot of money in the bank. This allowed me to push the research slider up to 100%. Just to keep the momentum going I had each city producing Research when not building spaceship parts. I also built workshops over farms in the main production cities - took a starvation hit, but I knew it would be worth it just to finish first.

It was quite tense for the last fifty years or so... still, never mind. Enormous thanks to GEZ, Cabert and Lucy for their help in getting me through this achievement. And apologies to Yahn for hijacking his thread, but I hope it'll have helped him as well.

Congratulations! :goodjob: Now, get back to work and play seven or eight thousand more games, like a good civ fanatic. ;)

GEZ is right, I think if we'd said "oh, don't bother defending your cities and just build workshops everywhere, really, everywhere!" you'd've still pulled it off. But if you feel like sharing the glory, well, that works too.

Building research and wealth actually works out pretty well, doesn't it? I always used to be wary of them, I figured I should be investing in buildings or units, but they're great, especially in the situation you describe. I don't know if it made the difference, but it sounds like it didn't hurt. And BTW, that space race is always tense, even if you've got spies all over the place and know your rival can't pull ahead. I'm still concerned about it after I launch, sometimes. :p

Now you must go win on Prince!

Not ready for Prince, yet (I never got beyond Prince when playing Civ2). At the very least, I want to record all six victory types on Noble before taking a step up. My game can only benefit in the long term.

I was kidding, of course. Either that or I meant long-term. I just suffered a crushing defeat last night on a sad attempt at Monarch, so I'm scaling back myself. You'll probably get there before I do. :salute:

I wouldn't bet on it. I do intend to move up the difficulty levels over time (but I meant to do that with Civ2, and I never really cracked King level). I don't want to get to the point where the game becomes boring because it's either too easy or too difficult. I don't think the first is very likely because you can always move up a level (I can't see myself ever feeling comfortable on Deity).

I am also working on my skills in Noble, and I have to say that there are tons of great resources here in the strategy forum (and don't forget to look in the Civ4 Strategy Articles section).

I don't think anyone answered it previously, but the ALC is the All Leader Challenge which is ran by Sisuitil. He is on #13 right now, just look for the thread ALC Game 13: Mali/Mansa Musa. If you look at his sig, he has links to all the previous ALC games and some of his own strategy articles. There is so much good info here I can't recommend those threads enough.

Also, look for Sulla's Civilization IV Walkthrough in the Strategy Articles section for some good guidance.

I have spent as many hours reading threads and guides as I have playing the game, and still have plenty to learn. There is a fantastic bunch of people in this place :D

same for me
It's great to see people like moonsinger, hendrickzoon, sulla, sirian sharing their most stunning moves in SGs or GotMs threads.
There are also people who put a lot of work into great articles (VoU for instance, Sisiutil, and so many others).
If you're ready to spend hours reading about the game, you should go up to prince with ease. If you're ready to spend days reading about the game and testing out some strats that you get to see here, you'll be a monarch player fast.
Above this, you need to play a little more to get into the specifics for each map, each leader, each situation.
Emperor is the first "diplomatic level" IMHO.
Then immortal and deity are devilish diplomacy + very agressive action levels.
Deity needing a good deal of luck on top of this.

amen :salute:
check out aelf and his synergy series. makes for interesting games when you try his strats on your own.

Eh, I wouldn't worry much if you never run across Conquest/Diplomatic/Time ;) Once you can comfortably pull Cultural, Space Race, and tion out of Noble, I'd say you're plenty ready to hit up the Prince :king:

OK, maybe not Time or Diplo, but I'd like to manage Conquest at least once. I'm not far from it in my current game (I'm even closer to Domination but I'm trying to push for the harder challenge).

Its well worth going for a diplomatic victory before going up a level because learning diplomacy is very useful indeed.

I might do it just for the sake of completeness.

To be honest, I don't want to move up to Prince until I feel 100% comfortable at Noble level. So I'll probably manage many Dom/Cul/SR victories in that time.
