Some of the Unique Units we have in Civ6 seem to replace regular units, others do not.

What do you think could be the reason for this ?

Could it be, that the unit some of them are going to replace is not yet in the vanilla game ?

Do we know which UU currently are not replacing any regular unit ?

What future unit could they replace (e.g. Recoat --> Rifleman ?) ?

It is more likely some are just trully unique (scythia's Horse Archers)
I really hope they don't start overcrowding the unit tree with Riflemen,,Composite bows, Grenadiers, etc.)

It's an aspect of their uniqueness.

I like it. It's a tweakable way to add some basic paper, rock scissors to a UU if Firaxis so chooses.

I kinda like the idea of UU's and upgrade path being:

Ancient-Classical-Medieval-Renaissance-Industrial-Modern-Atomic-Information
------------Unit--------------------Unit---------------------Unit------------------Unit----
----------------------------------------------------UU--------Unit------------------Unit----

If it is indeed that units upgrade every second era in VI???
Then we could have such a thing with almost every UU in the game, further increasing their uniqueness and impact on the game.

It give those civs an additional interesting advantage of having acces to units classes which not good at the time such as sammurai a melee unit in the medieval era while other civs melee unit is stuck with classical swordmen.

A couple interesting points about these:
The Redcoat and Garde Imperiale upgrade to Mech Inf. The Rough Rider upgrades to Modern Armor. That one is particularly interesting. It's actually a heavy cavalry unit. Heavy Cavalry units usually upgrades in sync with anti cav units, but the Rough Rider comes between Pikemen and AT Crew like the light cav line. I think this is a sort of hidden advantage. Its direct counter will be a whole era behind it.

Does anyone knows whether we can upgrade normal units to such UUs such as swordsman -> Samurai or musketman -> redcoat ?

That is avquestion I would like to see answered as well.

Well... unique in the sense that it is an additional slot in the tech. Functionally, the horse archer is a faster slinger with a higher melee value. (It's a ranged unit and not a cav unit at all, and benefits from policy cards that affect ranged units and doesn't benefit from cav cards)

I'm confused on the Saka horse Archer.
Is it an Archer or is it a Light Cav with the Archery Promotion tree?

If the latter, are there other UUs with the class of one type and the promotions of another?

It's an Archer, it upgrades to field cannon.

Also the Redcoat/Guard most likely skip over Infantry because within their respective field of influence, they're actually stronger than Infantry with their unique bonus, and only slightly weaker otherwise. So for England and France, the Infantry unit would become the better combat unit to fill in the weakness of whichever UU is being fielded. For example, invading foreign lands as the french you'd want Infantry on the front lines instead of Imperial guards - the reverse is true for England, as Redcoats would still be stronger than Infantry at that point.
