Well I got Civ3 Complete the other day and I still keep losing! The A.I. always gets a larger army and more tech even if i set funding to 90%! Also, how close should my cities be, and where's a good place to put them? And any other beginner's tips -- i read most of the war academy stuff but there's not really any early-game tips.

Welcome to CFC! [party] Yay. I didn't forget your balloons.

I like cxxxc city spacing, where c is a city and x is a tile.

Regarding tech there is probably something basic that you are not doing. I would guess that youare not building enough roads. Roads add an extra unit of commerce to each tile that has one. Republic helps too. Libraries and Universities help research.

On higher levels, it is generally better to set your research slider to 0% or 10% and buy and trade for techs.

Turn down the difficulty all the way. Set workers to automate, and turn on the govenors. Learn the basics of the game, which are pretty daunting on their own but not beyond anyone's grasp.

Where to place cities is largely a personal preference, but I would suggest building them 4 tiles away from each other as you're learning how to play.

Play through an entire game on a tiny map. You should win!

I disagree with Crimso - don't get bad habits of using automated workers and governors. Try doing different tactics different ways, and no relying on the computer to come up with them for you. I agree with Tomoyo about 3 tiles between cities - however, there will be special cases where you want cities on rivers, near luxuries, on the coast, etc.

Try following a story or a succession game (in the Stories & Tales forum). There you can see how others play the game and some opening tips - if you see a game on Regent/Monarch (what is your difficulty?), try downloading the 4000 BC/turn 0 save and play your turns and compare them to what the players did.

Also, one last point: workers are everything - you can have a huge military, but without workers and roads/irrigation/mines, you army won't be going anywhere. As a very, very general rule of thumb, try for 1 to 2 workers per city. Good luck, and welcome to CFC. :D

Don't put cities too close, or they will lose food and shields.

I was going to mention that he should get off the habit eventually, but no one should have to try to learn how to play civ III by micromanaging from the get-go. It's a sure fire way to get fustrated and confused. Let the AI take care of the chores for your first few games and then move on to doing it all yourself.

I think i agree with Crimso. Learn the basics but make sure you don't get into a habit of ignoring your workers and cities. Its easier to learn one thing at a time.

Read the manual as well but only after playing the game a few times. Don't expect to win within the first 10x reliably that you play this game. You WILL get better.

how close is too close? should their areas intersect at all, or should i put 4 tiles in between at minimum, or what?

Actually, I agree with Crimso. Govenors and Automated workers won't hurt you in chieftain and warlord. I did govenors up to Regent. I always pick my own builds, but they did workers and happiness.

Regent will teach you to unlearn all your bad habits picked up in the lower levels.

As long as you don't waste any land tiles, you're okay.

just read the instructions and find out things on your own, it's better you forge your own path!

put your cities close enough that u can connect it to your country but far enough away so that you get the most land that u can
