Went to atms at THREE banks and one credit union locally today and none worked. Thats 4 different banks. Got cash from the main bank ATM but the receipt said No. 64 and no balance. Two different friends said they had similar problems. No one to answer a phone at any of the numbers I have. Cars in banks lots on Saturday but no one came to the door.

Not set up for online banking because I don't trust any sort of transactions online.

Post here if you have had similar problems or have any idea what could affect all these different financial institutions in this way at the same time.

edit: I am seriously curious as to how and why 4 different institutions would be having problems at the same time.

If their fiber connections got cut, that would do it.

Why are you using socialist cash and not solid GOLD BARS like a normal Republican ?

I threw my back out getting a bike off the top rack of the store. Gold is buried. Old age happens.

Yeah, I guess these outfits could be linked up in some way. All are clustered in a small town. I just don't know.

probably an internet problem in the area. check back soon.

Can I borrow some $?

Most likely a localized cash distribution disruption. Did you check any non-bank ATMs?

Banks and other ATMs rely on 3rd party cash logistics companies,to supply the ATMs. If one bank was empty, I'd assume the problem is unique to them. If several are down, I'd assume the problem is distribution, not supply.

Throw yourself on the mercy of your local shopkeepers. Presumably you've been dealing with them over a period of years, and therefore they'll happily grant you credit till the banks are sorted out.

Ah no... wait... that's the US, and...

My grandfather, begining before WW2 ran a country store and the majority of customers ran a constant tab. When he became ill and sold the store those accounts went with the store and the new owner kept the same arrangement. Some people ran an account for decades and still have outstanding balances as when the owner died felt no need to pay the estate. That was an American jubilee.

Things changed.

Most stores will offer cash if you use a debit card. Banking online is just paying for bills and moving money around, not a way to get cash. Direct deposit is a "secure" transaction between banks. The only time I need an ATM, is to have cash to pay for my hair cut, because I normally don't keep cash around for that purpose and it sneaks up on me.

We do pay by check for haircuts occasionally, but sometimes they do not cash out the check for a couple of months, which is fun if you are trying to keep you account balanced.

MC, maybe you've been blacklisted. Obama's goons might be onto you.

Actually, this has happened to me before, and I went to ask at the counter of the credit union what was going on. Apparently, they take their ATMs offline for about a half-hour on Fridays to update the software and do some kind of maintenance with the main servers. I didn't really question it at the time.

Identity theft, I bet. But I think it's probably an unfounded fear in Mr Cooper's case.

I'm curious in my capacity as a web developer.

I build and maintain secure systems at work and I imagine online banking sites to be usually more secure than the stuff that I put up. I mean, those guys have teams looking after their security - at my work there's only me. Sort of. There's other teams looking after the security of the network, our web server, firewalls, etc., but the data transmission, user interface, data storage, communication between server and browser, etc. is all me.

I like to think that I am good at what I do, but.. security concerns of web users interest me, foremost, because the better I understand my users, the better products I can deliver. And while MisterCooper probably isn't a user of any one of my applications, most websites are built with similar paradigms in mind.

In this case it's probably a concern that I can dismiss, but who knows.
