OB02 - Giving is Better than Receiving

Well Santa was quite bored this round. Nobody wanted presents, it was all trade, trade, trade. But Santa is also happy to trade.

Presents were distributed in Calcutta, as they joined the expanding community of elves.

Karachi is ready to be convinced to join too.

We got a new present available: Chemistry, and in 11 turns we will have a new present ready: Steel.

Effort was spend on getting a better economic situation, and improving the military.

All the details are here:
Spoiler :
Preturn: Fidl with cities.

Turn 1: Hamburg Buddhist Monestary -> Catapult. Munich Catapult -> Catapult. Whip Forge in Essen. The Indian hippie gives us 40 gold out of kindness, and is rather annoyed by me declaring war on him. But for a moment, consider his head on a pole...

Turn 2: Berlin Grocer -> Bank. Cologne Grocer -> Bank. Frankfurt Buddhist Missionary -> Aqueduct. Essen Forge -> Coloseum. Constructs Academy in Essen.

IBT: It's present time, Mao will trade Fur for Gems, and Santa makes sure there's Gems in Maos stocking. And Elizabeth has discovered Liberalism.

Turn 3: Munich Catapult -> Catapult. Calcutta is bombarded to zero defence.

Turn 4: Hamburg Catapult -> Musketman. Begun the assault on Calcutta. Lost 6 Catapults, and calcutta has one remaining defender. Buddhism spreads in Delhi.

IBT: Alexander cancels Open Borders.

Turn 5: Chemistry -> Steel. Munich Catapult -> Catapult. And Calcutta is ours, along with 156 gold, and 6 workers. Traded with Montezuma, Rice for Gold.

Turn 6: For a change, nothing happened...

Turn 7: Munich Catapult -> Musketman.

Turn 8: Hamburg Musketman -> Catapult. Frankfurt Aqueduct -> Catapult. Essen Colosseum -> Library. Begun bombarding Karachi.

Turn 9: Continued bombarding Karachi. Whipped Library in Essen.

IBT: Last chance for christmas, and Mansa wishes Chemistry, but will give Divine Right and 830 gold in return, Ho Ho Ho.

Turn 10: Essen Library -> Grocer.

Postturn: Karachi is ready to be for the taking. We are 11 turns away from Steel. We gained a bit in power and score.

Steel comes in, Military Tradition next. Several Cannons started.
We also get a great scientist in Delhi, I parked him for later use.

1650
That's it... but not before I wonder two things:

Why the F... did I keep Karachi ?(it is the Islam capital, but that's about it ....) Sorry about that...

And, why is Monty's strike force patrolling the South pole...?

Without looking at the save, I'd say domination seems the logical win. Diplo will be out because our present giving just seems to p*ss of the AIs that don't get presents, we're probably way behing Liz in techs for Space. Too late to think about a culture win. Cannons and cavalry.

Who should we pick on, Mao ???

I got it.
I looked at the save and at the power graphs. I don't think Mao or Monty are viable targets despite their location. They both have very large armies and are on better terms with us. The builder civs, Elizabeth and Mansu, both have declining power graphs and useful techs to extort. I would rather face 2-3 riflemen and grenadiers, then 10-12 musketmen and longbowmen and pikemen. Have a look at the save and see what you think, but for now, i would suggest targeting one of the builders. Also, our empire doesn't need hybrid production cities, it needs cottage-filled commerce cities and the builders have that. My two :commerce:

Anyway, this is a 'got it', but i won't be able to play until later tonight.

Can someone swap with me. Something came up. Sorry.

If no one grabs it by tonight, i am pretty sure i can play tonight (late UK time). Sorry for the confusion. Something came up yesterday.

1650AD-1695AD

Pre-turn Examination
In terms of tile improvements, these cities are a bit under-specialised. In my opinion, a city with mines all around it shouldn’t have cottages unless there is an excess of food and it is already working all mines. Even then, I would prefer to specialize it further by building workshops (or watermills) instead of cottages. A city like that needs maybe a grocer and a marketplace to bring up happy/health and doesn’t need a library etc (unless its for a wonder). This is just my opinion and the way I play, but I find its fairly effective. I am going to plow under some 5 commerce cottages around specialized cities (like our heroic epic city) so that we can move them towards their specialized function a bit more. I leave the builds as they are however as most production cities are already focused on cannons and we will soon need those.
Also in terms of specialization, we don’t have a GPP farm.

Civics
The combination of a our no-chopping limit and the presence of two food, two commerce tiles makes our capital a little sub-par for running bureaucracy so I switch to vassalage and while I am at it, pick up mercantilism.

Research
In 1685, we learn the secrets of military tradition and I set research to 0% while I upgrade our knights and catapults. I want to provide the next player a usable modern army as best as I c an. I also set research to printing press.
I try to make some trades happen and I notice that we are at the ‘WFYABTA’ limit with Monty and China and that the greeks don’t like us enough to trade. Well, so be it. We’ll just have to beat some techs out of the English and Milanese.

Tile Improvements
I indulged my pet peeves a bit and cottaged or windmilled grassland hills near commerce cities and built watermills and farms near production cities. This lost us some turns of growth but I think will strengthen us within the time frame of this game. I want to continue farming/workshopping our cottages near Cologne, but havn't targeted the big ones yet because people might not like that.

Great People
We could use our scientist to light-bulb part of education but this is already known by two civilizations and doesn’t provide any immediate benefit. We are not in a position to start building universities and we aren’t in a liberalism race. So I merge him to our academy city.

Builds
Our production cities built grenadiers and cannon, as did our hybrid-style capital. Our commerce cities built commerce-type improvements (markets, libraries, etc) and our newest acquisitions worked on courthouses.

Foreign Powers
Early in this turn-set, Mao began a golden age. In 1670, Monty (pleased diplomatically) adopts vassalage and theocracy and now has ‘enough of his hands’ when I highlight war options. Looks like ol’ feather-head is gonna rampage soon. Lets just hope our pleased status gives us a break. He is annoyed with Victoria and she has the lowest power. I had hoped to go after her anyway, so I hope that’s what he does so we can double-team her. In 1685, England kick-starts a golden age.

Damn Damn Damn Damn Looks like we are now at war with the Chinese… arghhhh! I wanted to fight Mali or England. Merry Christmas Victoria.

oz00x-01.jpg

The very next turn (last turn I played), Monty asks us to cancel our deals with the English and on the very same turn, the English ask to trade crabs for dye. I think she needs them for happiness.

War
We now find ourselves in the unenviable position of having to recall all our forces which were converging on the English border to the Chinese end of our empire.
He immediately sends some pillaging knights. Our own knights, cannons, catapults, city-raider macemen are scurrying across our empire to get to the western borders and fight the Chinese but because he declared on Mansa, his main forces are probably on the Malinese borders. Hopefully he takes a few of those cities and we can take them from them for ourselves…
Mali's and Victoria's cities have lots of cottages and are probably really nice at this stage of the game while the Chinese cities are all just huge tracts of farmland...

Sorry about the war situation but that’s sort of the nature of this variant.

Here’s the save.

Firstly apologies for the delay in this, RL has been overwhelming recently .

Anyway, we're at war with Mao but we have the mighty cavalry and cannons to call on.

He sends two knights in at the Greek border, where we are lightly defended, so I upgrade a local spear to a pike and (after begging 240gp of Monty) a sword to a grenadier.

Our wine is going to be pillaged near the capital but that's the last thing that knight will ever do :)

Well now he brings in a proper stack.

By now our army is assembling and after softening up by a couple of cannons it is taken down with no losses as is a smaller stack further north. Time to go on the offensive.

Oh well, Immac, you got your wish

This one is going to be a defensive war. Thankfully I upgraded/whipped our eastern defense after Mao's sudden appearance on this border.

She has cavlary unfortunately and starts pillaging with four of them  IBT, Monty moves a stack through here, chasing the cavalry away (only 3 of them left one injured :goodjob:)

I move my large stack into Chinese territory and keep knocking off isolated knights he is sending through in the north .

Guangzhou is taken easily.

Monty razes Hastings  This is good as our borders expand into the area where it used to be.

We take Xian.

And that's my turns (actually think I played one extra).

Here's a peace offer from Mao.

Before we take peace we should at least take a couple more cities, especially Tadmekka (which he is kindly offering us as we have 9 troops outside) which we should probably raze. In fact, I'm sure we could wipe him out but it would be nice to pick up some techs from him.

The only tech we have to trade is Steel but I don't want to give it up yet.

A SAVE

GreyFox, you're up!

Liz will offer 70 gold BTW, so think we should take her offer and keep going after Mao.

Printing Press comes in and Replaceable Parts is selected.
