OB04 - Five Is The Magic Number

[offtopic]
Just to note BTS issues resolved. (I think the pacth has hard coded some file locations so if you install in a non-standard way e.g not "normal" file structure it goes pear shaped..)
Can you expand on this a bit? Or provide a link? I renamed the install directory from "Sid's-really-long-directory-name IV" to just "Civ4". Does this mean I'm going to have patch problems? Its still in Program Files and everything else is the same.

Conroe I cant be sure but I dont have my Games in C:\ Program files (e:\games\.. etc) and it was suggested to me that dual installing would cause issues with this.

I suspect if you are not dual installing you may be fine.

My symptom was that the Automatic Update of BTS went wrong (claimed it had updated but hadn't properly). However reinstalling on my E: drive and running the pacth manually worked fine.

Good luck!!

Eek,

Have had little time due to work commitments sorry guys, could play tomorrow night but am up in SGOTM so as that has tight time limit will need to play that. Gonna be tied up till Sun, so either skip me or swap me with Oz, either is fine. I've had second look at save and still looks tough, Only tech trade is either Alpha or Maths for Meditation. Only civs with Poly will either not trade or we have nothing to trade to them. I would suggest war with Izzy whilst we look through Egypt for trade.

Onwards we go...

We pop a GS in capital (he will bulb Compass). We can build Academy here which would be best I think. Leave him for now.

Peace cancelled with Shaka and we hop staright back on the wagon.

I think we need to consider some bad trades as Izzy has Monarchy and someone founded Theology.

In any case, Shaka is destroyed.

Izzy looks like the next target. Once we've got the axes healed and back in town. She has provided a nice bridge for us.

Currency in 8. I would trade Maths to Izzy for Meditation and then hope we can trade it to Vicky next turn for Priesthood. Ramses has Calendar and Darius Construction but neither will trade.

Pyramids is due in 3. Representation straight away (even using a civis swap) as the extra 3 happiness will give us great help. Maoi Statues next turn in capital.

So decisions to make.

What to do with GS? Compass has trade value but Academy is better long term plan.

War with Izzy? I say yes.

Keep any of her cities? Not sure

Once Currency is in, do we found another city. Again I say yes.

Research after Currency, Construction? Code of Laws?

Bad trades? yes unfortunately. Maybe wait until Currency and get cash too.

We can up the research rate to 100% and get Currency in 4 and still have 60gold in the bank. This would be good.

Mighty Dwaarf is UP.

Meditation is a cheap tech. We may be in a position to make an arrogant demand and pick it up for free. Especially from a civ we are getting ready to attack anyway. :mischief:

My preference, if its even available, would be to pick up poly instead of Meditation. This would hopefully allow us to trade Mathematics for both Priesthood and Monotheism. My guess is Izzy has Monotheism, but she might not want to trade with us after a demand.

It would be nice to do 2 civics with the next swap. I wouldn't put off rep for very long to do it, but it would be nice.

I would definitely agree to upping the research slider to get Currency before we do any trading, though.

Regarding the Great Scientist ... didn't we already use one to build an Academy?

Good idea. Won't lose anything by trying.

Me too, except no-one will trade it. Mono is the only tech available.

OR is the only other one I can think of but may be a while until we get Mono.

Me too :D

Thought so too but can find no evidence of it

I am here and can play today. After today will be OOP for a week till 28th, I had posted this on the SGOTM thread which is where may have got confused.

 Played 10.

Moved sci to 80% Currency in 4 turns, Used GS to build Academy.
Built Moai statues and Pyramids held of representation for couple of turns waiting for OR.

Turn 4 Currency in, trade Alpha to Rameses for Poly and 175g (took the gold rather than med as we could get elsewhere or research ourselves in 1 but didnt really need it). I was under the impression that one of our holy shrines had already been built?? but on checking they hadn't . Therefore changed research from Mono to Const and changed to Representation. We will more than likely have to bite the bullet somewhere build a temple for a priest so we can get GP, maybe best in capital as already getting 1 great prophet point from Moai statues. I was about to DOW on Izzy when I thought to try and demand Med from her first, she obliged but I was unaware that this then meant we were unable to DOW on her for 10 turns . Is this a new thing in BTS or just a gap in my game knowledge??

Further traded cow to Rameses for Sugar, Corn to Vicky for 2gpt,
Moved WB past Bantu and saw this

Decided more tech trading needed so Maths to Vicky for Priest and Mono and 10g, Currency to Rameses for Monarchy. Is only Vicky currently with Feudalism which she wont trade to us, so hopefully she will feel the same towards others. Also destroyed barb city of Yayoi for handful of coins. Only other thing was that Constr came in last turn changed to HBR (3 turns) so we can build elephants.

Future turns
Possible build temple to try and manufacture a GP for shrine.
Happiness is good at the moment so can get cities to about size 10 easily.
War with Izzy as soon as poss. (4 turns)
I should have internet access this week but wont be able to play the game so if I come round again before 28th then skip me. ;)

It'll be a couple of days before I can play, as I'm up in DMAW04. But, yes, I should be able to get to it.

It is the year 375AD and we have only 4 cities. :crazyeye: It is no wonder that our economy is so pathetic. But yet, because of our economy, we really cannot afford another city at the moment. :ack: Not really sure what to do about that ... but things should improve as the cottages mature. We have a Settler parked in Cuzco. I'm thinking the new city should be placed SE of Cuzco.

The city will have some swine wine, in addition to some of the finest silk shirts. I'm also thinking a Palace jump to this city is in order. Of course, this is all for future discussion, as I left the Settler parked in Cuzco ...

I instead concentrated on building Catapults, in preparation for our war with Isabella. We had 4 turns left on our peace treaty, so I declared as soon as the peace treaty expired. Unfortunately, she would learn the secrets of Feudalism and revolt to Vassalage just before the treaty expired.

For the benefit of the lurkers, here is an overview of the borders at the start of my turnset ...

Isabella had a Settler, escorted by Swordsmen, that founded the city of Santiago SE of Cuzco. The city was auto-razed when our forces attacked it. We also took the city of Toledo, which received a longbow upgrade. With dyes and banana, this should be a pretty good commerce city, so I decided to keep it.

At the end of my 10 turns, our forces were marching on Cordoba from the west and the south. The southern stack consists of our highly promoted Axemen. The western stack is mostly catapults. I lost most of the melee units in the stack while marching on Cordoba.

On the research front, I completed Horseback Riding and then researched Code of Laws. We have 37 turns remaining on Civil Service. We are cashflow positive (+2gpt) at 20% on the research slider. We are generating an incredible 27 beakers per turn.

Our variant only allows us to capture 1 more city. Thus we may want to consider peace once we take Cordoba. Fighting longbows with swords and axes will be tough. That and we really, really need to focus our efforts on stabalizing our economy.

The save is attached ...
