OB04 - Five Is The Magic Number

I think the 5 building rule is the main reason for the downturn in the economy. We should look at getting Courthouses in Ulundi and Toledo asap and settling the bacon shiraz city when we can afford it.
:hmm: That is something I forgot to mention in my report ... I started a courthouse in Tiwanaku(?) because the city maintenance was something like 7gpt. But now that I think about it, we probably don't want a courthouse in that city ...

IIRC, we plan to make Tiwanaku an economy city, so I cancelled the Courthouse and started a Market. Likewise, I started a market in Cuzco, assuming we are going to build the Kashi Vishwanath in the future.

Our exploring workboat had an encounter with a barb galley :(

Overall, things are going well...

For the AI.

Darius completed the Parthenon.
Vicky completed the Statue of Zeus.

For us? Not so much.

I've bombarded down Cordoba to 0%, but she has this ridiculous garrison:

I stopped here because I didn't know whether or not to proceed AND I didn't know whether or not we wanted to keep the city.

And being the bonehead that I am, I forgot to save. I'll load up the autosave...

EDIT: http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/96336/OB04_AD-0720.CivBeyondSwordSave

PS: We lost our deals with Darius and Vicky

I stopped here because I didn't know whether or not to proceed AND I didn't know whether or not we wanted to keep the city.
The answer to the second question, I think, is we definitely want to keep Cordoba. We've captured 4 cities and we are only allowed one more. The position of Cordoba fits in nicely with our other captured cities.

However, that is certainly a formidable defensive force in the city. The good news is we probably don't need our army after taking the city, as we should negotiate a peace treaty with her. If we have enough suicide cats, we should be able to knock those longbows down to a more manageable strength. I would think we'd need at least 6 to 8 cats. But we'd also need at least a dozen melee units to make sure we can take the city without passing out any promotions.

The alternative, if we don't have the units, is to make peace and save the city for later when we have Macemen. It might take a while before that happens, though, given our current research rate. We'd probably also need to crank out a few Settlers to grab that empty land before the AI moves in.

Sorry didnt realise was me up, I have got too much work on at the moment so please skip me this time round.
If I can get a bit more input, I can finish my turnset then hand it off to Ozbenno.

I agree about keeping Cordoba,

Question?? If we move our capital to be more central to cut maintenance cost does that count as a building/wonder in target city???

If not then think it is something we should definitely look at as at the moment is in the corner of our lands.

I think we need to think of how we could win this?? Plan for that and stick to it, and cross all fingers.

Welcome back Ozbenno!

Well, here we go:

It took us three turns, but we took Cordoba, and make peace for 20G and Calendar. Cuzco completed its Market and is currently producing wealth, allowing us to crank research back up to 50%. We have courthouses planned in some cities, but that can change (I cancelled a monument, because we don't need it). Some cities are producing Spies, but can switch to Wealth if there is nothing to build.

I have a jumbo on go-to to defend our lands to the west, because our chariot was killed. Also, we have a GG in Tiwanaku that I accidently fortified, so don't forget about it!

I've updated the 2nd post to reflect where we are in the game currently.

OK, thoughts...

We currently are of no religion, all cities bar one have Buddhism. I'd say adopt this. Izzy and Darius are Buddhists too.

We can get Philosophy from Victoria for Calendar/Construction/HBR plus 50 gold. We should then be able to trade Philosophy to Darius for Feudalism and cash. I'd say its worthwhile.

Once we get Civil Service I'd swap civics to bureaucracy and organised religion (if we adopt Buddhism).

I'd settle the next city asap as we can get 2 happiness from it.

I don't actually see us being in that bad a position here. Once we can upgrade our forces to maces we will need to take down Ramses, Izzy, Vicky and Darius (in that order). Easy!

Research, I'd say Civil Service/Metal Casing/Machinery/Engineering, gather a huge army of trebs/maces/crossbows/pikes and raze the known world.

Agree/disagree?

Generally, I agree. Our economy is shaping up a lot better, so there is no reason to delay our next city. I should have moved the settler into place (its in Cuzco).

Before I started I did three things. Moved the settler to the new city location, moved the GG to Cuzco for settling and diverted two workers to hook up the wine at the new city.

Akkad founded.

Decide against any trades at the moment.

I start a market in capital and granary in Ulundi and Temple in Tiwanaku (for priest).

I whip a courthouse in Cordoba. It already has granary and aqueduct, should these count as part of our five buildings?

Civil Service comes in and I start on Metal Casing. I revolt to Organised Religion and Bureaucracy, followed by switch to Buddhism.

I have a spy in Izzy's territory and one headed for Ramses. I change weightings to give max to these two.

I've started a settler in Cuzco maybe for fish/horses on west coast.

We have a source of income nearby.

Metal Casing in 4, I think Machinery and Engineering and endless warfare

I think our attack order should be Ramses, Darius, Isabella and then Vicky.

So thoughts…

First the above list is based on current builds completing and is well worth a check..

Tiwanaku I guess is intended to run a priest when its temple is complete however Babylon is leading the GP race to produce a useless scientist.
Option 1 is second temple + priest in Tiwanaku so it overtakes Babylon
Option 2 run merchants in Babylon and gamble on getting a merchant / Great prophet out of Babylon?
Option 3 Merchants in Tiwanaku (pure pool) + turn off specialists in Babylon and gamble the maoi statues pop us a prophet later??

Personally I favour guaranteeing a Prophet from Tiwanaku with 2 priests and gambling the 2nd GP is a merchant in Babylon by switching to 2 merchants there now?

Views definitely welcome..

Other than that.

1. Have we decided if we can move the palace ?
2. Basically research through to Macemen before launching the next war versus Egypt. I guess we raze and re-settle 2 prime sites to complete our "5"
3. Then going for Engineering and continue warring

Is this the agreed city for cuzco's settler

Oops, forgot about a roster, thanks Ralph.

I think pure prophet is the way to go. Means at some stage we have to turn of the scientists.

What do we think about captured buildings? Should they count towards the 5? I would say no as we have no say in them.

Moving the palace to Cuzco might be a good idea, especially the 50% production boost from bureaucracy.

As for the settler site, looking at it again I'm not sure (although it will have decent production). We have 4 more cities to settle. Might be worth checking the Egyptian and Spanish borders for sites we can raze/resettle. If there aren't 4 good sites close to home then this is the best in our current lands.

Well a pretty quiet set of builder turns as we go down the Machinery – Engineering path whilst preparing for a long war ahead so don’t worry all you frothing at the mouth types this will probably be the last peaceful turn set of the game.

Do a couple of resource trades with rameses and darius to boost happiness and cash to accelerate research

Key events

We raised the Barb city to generate a bit of cash but probably more beneficial picking up an extra worker to continue developing tiles.

Naturally this gap was unnoticed for long and Isabella is in the mood for expansion sending off 2 settlers.

1 promptly replaced the Barb city we had razed so will probably be the first city to go down in the next war.

After this we picked up the Random event that gives us some beakers towards metal Casting I chose to invest 35 gold for a 50% chance of extra beakers thinking they would also go to Metal Casting but actually they just gave us some of Theology

We got another insignificant event later

Now the Apostolic Place is in play and we need to be careful re Rameses as he has a very dominant position and we don’t want him voting himself a victory!! How we deal with this should probably be agreed for implementation next set.

Having researched Metal casting I decided to trade it for theology with rameses as it unlocks a good war civic and the tech was wide spread so rameses could pick it up somewhere else if we refused.

Once Machinery was in we started on Engineering and producing Macemen.. Amongst this we also have been spawning Hindu missionaries so we can leverage Theocracy / Hinudism combo if we want but have had no luck in spreading the religion.

EOT

6 turns from Engineering.

Now into heavy Macemen mode ready for war
When we are ready to go out of Org religion I guess we go Police State / theocracy
Haven’t picked up Feudalism as no suitable trade available (don’t want to give Machinery to Rameses.)

Tiwanaku will pop our needed Prophet before Babylon, we might be lucky and get a merchant (I ran them for a while to give us a chance) but expect we will get a useless scientist / 2nd Prophet.

Issie’s other settler is looking for a home.

We have pre built a settler as I agree with Ozbennon that better sites will be available once we have razed some AI cities

Well done Ralph!

I think we need to head after Ramses then Darius as they are the most advanced. We should make razing the Apostolic Palace a priority. Once Engineering comes in, we should run 0% research to upgrade all our troops, while building trebs.

Roster

Ozbenno
Ralph_Jackson - Done
Conroe - UP
Kodii - On Deck
Mighty Dewaarf

Got it. It'll be tomorrow at the earliest before I can play.

A shame you didn't whip us some boats for coastal defense.
