OB04 - Five Is The Magic Number

I try to think of the best plan of attack. I move a pike to a hill to view Tarsus, Darius' northern city. He has one cavalry inside but doesn't seem to have horses, so hopefully he isn't getting them from Vicky. I decide to move both stacks towards Persepolis for a quick resolution to this war.

Ramesses is in the 40%s for breaking free as well. I fear that may be unavoidable.

Our first look inside isn't so fearsome but will take a while to bombard down.

I trade Izzy iron for Incense and whale for dye.

Great Engineer. Will bulb some of Steel, probably best use now. Leave for now.

I take this as we don't need that war now.

Finally we can begin the assault.

5 catatpults die first then 1 treb but the rest of my collateral crew win. Time for the ground crew. Musket loses at good odds to start and that is the only casulaty.

And that was 10 turns.

Darius won't capitulate yet but his remaining cities should fall fairly quickly from here.

I'm assembling a new stack in Alexandria (Ramsses' land), the troops are on auto-route to there (muskets, knights and trebs).

Here's Darius' remaining two eastern cities, take these (Gordium first) and he will capitulate.

Military Science in 10. Upgrade our maces to grens and we should be able to take Vicky (who has Steel but no iron :goodjob: ).

Cordoba is our only unhappy face, we can whip the forge from next turn to get rid of that.

Ok this is my got it, will have a report up by Tueday evening.

Can our vassals trade with our enemies? Moot point once we declare on her.
:dunno: I'm kinda new to this whole vassals thing, as I skipped Warlords. So I have no clue if our vassals can trade with other civs.

Well a short and sweet report.

Objectives.

1. Capitulate Darius
2. Finish Mil Science for Grenadiers
3. Assemble troops for Vikcy.

Well the attacks versus Gordium and Pasargardae went fairly smoothly, had to lose a few troops but after a few turns both cities fell. Ozbenno had left enough troops to attack both cities simultaneously which was nice

But what’s this daft old Darius won’t capitulate, this slows us down a bit as we have march off to Tarsus which is back where we came from. This too falls but again bleeding our stacks slightly but at least popping a Great General that now means we have experience 11 troops straight out of our Heroic Epic city..

Unfortunately Darius wont give a worthwhile tech for peace so we just take him as a Vassall and move on towards Vicky.

Troops are assembled at her border (note not move so the next playher can invade before pressing enter.

And reinforcements are a couple of turns away..

Before everybody thinks we have gone over the top her power curve isn’t to be sniffed at.

I think this game will be over before steel comes in but I partially light bulbed it with the Great Engineer anyway. We are on heavy Grenadier production mode having prioritised building Trebs in my set.

We are doing fine on not losing vassals as Rameses is still a way off the 50% limits so shouldn’t be an issue…

A spy is on goto into Vicky’s territory but I forgot to put all espionage against her so may not be able to help that much!!

Well done. The game is wrapping up here. Can we upgrade our maces to grens in our vassals territory or do we have to go back home to do it (CR3 grens would be nice)? May be worth sending a few back home to do so if we have to. I wouldn't delay the invasion though.

Looks like I'm up ... it'll probably be a day or two before I can play, though. I don't much like the look of that power graph. Clearly Victoria has been doing some upgrading. Hopefully it wasn't Infantry ... :run:

It's probably her upgrading to redcoats all round. At the least we should have a couple of pinch promoted grenadiers in the stack before venturing in (and seeing about upgrading the maces).

We also may need a navy to get at her island cities if she won't capitulate after we take the mainland ones.

I've downloaded the save and had a look around. Our Spy was on goto orders to London, so I was treated to a look at that city's garrison ... She's got 15 Redcoats stationed there. Fifteen! Our main assault force has 6 Knights, 3 Musketmen and a Maceman. I don't see how we have enough troops to launch an offensive on turn 0.

We've yet to produce our first Grenadier. And then it will take 10 turns for the Cuzco Grenadiers to reach the front lines. It will take 5 turns to move our CR Macemen back to our borders for upgrading, then another 4 turns to get them back into action. But then we don't exactly have a lot of cash available for upgrades.

Research on Steel is showing 19 turns. Thats at 30% research and running a deficit that will eat most all of our available gold. Which means research and upgrading are mutually exclusive ...

I'm thinking it might be best to hold off declaring on Vicky for a few turns. Spend the time consolidating our forces. Thoughts?

100% Agree. We can't possibly face what she has set up without grens. I'd spend a turnset or two to build up. Its a shame that our troops are arriving from such long distances.

I think we should shut off research and rely on trebs to do the dirty work. The cash is better spent on upgrades.

Not a lot to report this turnset. It was mostly pressing enter and moving units around. I do believe, though, that we are as ready as we will ever be to get this war started. Our assault force is quite a bit larger than it was 10 turns ago ...

Our stack includes, among others, 10 Grenadiers, 10 Musketmen, 17 Knights, and 24 Trebuchets. I did not pass out any promotions, so check them before declaring.

I turned off research and upgraded all of our maces, except one. He was a Medic II and I didn't see much point. I also upgraded a couple of pikes, as well. I turned research back on after the upgrades.

I'm sorry to report that there are a ton of troops on GoTo orders. To make things easier for the next player, I labeled a tile within our borders for mustering the troops. All units on GoTo orders are heading towards that tile. The only units east of the mustering point are our stack on the English border.

I also tasked Babylon with building us a navy of Galleys. We've got 5 of them at this point. I'm not sure that they will do us any good, though. Victoria now has Destroyers, as can be seen in and around London.

I'll close this report with a look at the current power graph ...

and finally the save ...

Will be playing tonight but just want to run some thoughts.

London is well defended with about a dozen redcoats, whereas other two mainland cities only have noraml defence of 3-4 redcoats. So....

1) Do we dive straight in towards nearest city hoping not to get attacked by redcoats moving out from London. Do we split the stack and go for York and Notts together or keep it together (safety in numbers) and go for one after the other.

2) DOW and see where she moves the redcoats in London, either onto boats or towards Rameses land. If she does the latter we can easily pick them off first then advance on her.

Also do grens get attack bonus vs redcoats??

Played we have destroyed London and York but took some losses especially trebs.

I managed to land some troops near one of the SW island cities. The gallsys got there unharmed but a destroyer snook up on one of the triremes nr Babylon and snook off again into the darkness so beware there. Izzy and Rameses have small stacks on edge of Notts borders our troops are injured but may need to get to Notts to raze it before it is captured. I think Vicky only has defeding troops left the only trouble will be navigating the troops from island to island. Most of troops are heading west to be used island hopping as we should have enough in main stack to finish off Notts
