OB07 - The First Shall Be Last

A Prophet would be great - Song of Autumn would boost our finances considerably...

... I actually expected this part of the game to be the hardest from the beginning, catching up with #1 the last time. We'll just have to be absolutely, ruthlessly good at this game :)

Its possible to build the Song of Autumn with a Great Artist as well as a Prophet. Whichever is easier to produce should be your primary goal.

Excellent report, Jet! :goodjob:

433 There is a power graph. It says, "you suck, Thessa. You suck the marrow, plasma, and soul clear out of this chart, and your excuse for an army is a pitiful assembly of Keebler elves, garden gnomes, Smurfs, and Will Ferrell."
We have garden gnomes? Excellent! Things can't be that bad if we have garden gnomes! :p

Smelting is tempting. I think we're probably big enough to find Iron, and +1 to Swordsmen and to cheap Warriors would be great.
 Does Smelting give the +1 or do we need IW, as well?

I'm building a lot of Warriors because they're so much cheaper than Swordsmen,

Finish the Heroic Epic in Bruti and put it in a Swordsman loop.

Who is up?
I believe that would be ME ... I will try and play it tonight, otherwise it'll be Friday.

Nice.

Smelting reveals Iron, as well as allowing Forges and Workshops. We'd have to research Smelting, find Iron, hook it up, and then I guess have our melee units in a city. Getting Iron could possibly be a use for the Settler that is 3 turns for completion and that I suggested settling on the east coast Bananas. IW adds Champions, Shipyards, and Lumbermills.

We actually have to have Iron Working to get the +1 I think, smelting reveals the iron and Iron Working lets us use it. Units have to be in a city to get the bonus.

If we've researched Sorcery, then we need an army of adepts that we can upgrade (I think we had one). Fireballs and Maelstorm will help our fight. We can still use settlers for the region in between us and the former luchirup lands.

You must be right about Iron, Ozbenno.

He is. Works the same way with Bronze, only exception is Mithril.

Unfortunately, I have yet to play the save. But I have stared blankly at the screen for the last several hours. :dubious: We trail the score leader by 385 points. That is up from a 334 point deficit when we first met our former selves.

I also notice that our choice of civics has resulted in a 20% production cut for military units. Guardian of Nature is granting us happy faces in exchange for a 10% cut. While Apprenticeship is giving us +2xp for a 10% cut. If we give up the promotion, we can revolt to Military State for a 15% production increase (5% net) and gain the ability to draft. Alternatively, we can research Way of the Wicked (2 turns) and switch to Slavery. That would be my choice. I also wonder if Nationhood (vs Religion) would be worth it for another 10% boost. :dunno:

As for research, I'm leaning towards Jet's proposal for Smelting followed by IW. If we pop a GS, I'm thinking of 'bulbing Arcane Lore since the free GS is still available. If we get a GP instead, probably go with the shrine as Imhotep suggested.

As always, thoughts and suggestions are welcome ...

My guess is that food has more value to us for growth than for pop rushing.

Military State would now save 5 GPT = 10 units * 160% inflation - 11 for Low upkeep to High upkeep, and more later. The +25% production roughly cancels out Combat I from Apprenticeship. And then there's the production flexibility.

With Guardian of Nature, we don't need the happy from Religion, except by one point in Myrean. I think we would want Nationhood for sure once we had war weariness, and we will probably need to build up a lot of it. Nationhood would also add 14 hammers, or 19 if you count the cities that are not currently building military. Consumption is about the same, 30 GPT = 178 upkeep * 20% - 5 for Low upkeep to Medium, but without the WW benefit.

My apologies for the delay. I played a 10 turn set. And even then, its taken me 2½ days to do that!

Started off by revolting to Military State. Unfortunately, our unit cost did not change. Not sure what's up with that. A bug maybe? I would then go ahead and pick up the "Pieces of Barnaxus". Not sure what to do with them, considering the Luichuirp are gone. But it does lower our unit cost by 1 unit. :p

Did a deal with the Sidar ... for good relations more than any need ...

Tried to do some tech trading with some of our friends, but the prices were a mite high. :shake:

Evidently, Perpentach is a civ out there somewhere ...

I continued Jet's emphasis on building troops. As our cadre of Workers develop the land, several of our northern cities have pretty decent production. Thus I queued up some more Training Yards.

A Great Sage was born ... He would 'bulb 2/3rds of Arcane Lore. With Einon continuing to widen the score gap during my set, I decided to take the 4 turn detour to pick up this medieval era tech. The free GS from Arcane Lore means we still have a GS available to us. He will lightbulb Pass thru the Ether, another medieval tech. The 34 points are tempting, but I'm wondering if we wouldn't be better served by an Academy? :dunno:

After Arcane Lore completed, I resumed the Smelting research. There are 5 turns remaining.

I marched a small stack down into Hippus territory. While there, I came pretty doggone close to killing off our hero ... :scared:

We lost a highly promoted Swordsman when a Hippus Chariot charged our stack. Otherwise, Rhoanna didn't have anything to stop us from taking Gaene.

We need to decide if we want to continue pounding on her or make peace and focus on the big dog Einon Logos. I've got troops forming up on our western borders, as well as the stack sitting in the Hippus city. I used 2 of our Adepts in the attack on Gaene, so we now have 3 Adepts ready for upgrading. I'm leaning towards taking the fight to Einon, but would love to hear some other thoughts ...

The save is attached ... we are now only 341 points behind our former selves ...

We never got a prophet. The sage that bulbed 2/3 of Arcane Lore was born instead.

Roster:
Ozbenno
Jet
Conroe
Imhotep - UP
Diamondeye - On Deck

Nice work. If we have another GS, I'd go for an Academy as Pass Through The Ether is pretty darn expensive and even with the bulb would take may turns, may as well keep on towards Iron Working.

I'd see if we can get some map trading going so we can see what is the best course of action militarily. Maybe take one or two more of Rhoanna's cities just in case!!

For the sage, I'd suggest a golden age for short term benefit.

Wasn't the prophet meant for SoA?
As Jet noted, the odds just weren't in our favor for a Great Prophet. Just too many GS points coming out of our GL. But with Arcane Lore, we did pick up another Great Sage ...

:ack: I failed to notice how expensive Pass thru the Ether was. Good call, Oz! I was just thinking it didn't really benefit us any. Jet's idea of a golden age is interesting. I'm still leaning towards an Academy I think, but a GA timed with our next civics swap might be a good use ...

The advantage of going after Einon is it lowers his score while raising ours. We close the gap twice as fast. The advantage of taking on Rhoanna is she should be easier. I think she is out of gas, based upon her weak counter-attacks to our small stack. A couple three Chariots were the most serious threat. And once our swords are made of iron, that threat will disappear.
