I started the set off by switching research to Mining. We could really use the extra production from the mines and I noticed a grassland mine in the captured barb city of Tia'ran. Plus Jet said that Hidden Paths was an arbitrary choice and we really don't want the points from a classical era tech on the eve of our war. I also traded some Dyes with Rhoanna to pick up some more happiness.
I thought things were looking up when Rhoanna converted to Leaves on the very next turn ...
Our hero, Gilden Silveric, singlehandedly captured another barb city.
Things were really going well those first couple of turns. And then I saw this:
Our hero was sent scampering for the south, still bloody and wounded from his battle with the barbarians at Ithralial. But alas, there was no way he would be able to make it in time. Our fogbusters would be withdrawn and all available units would beeline for the south. But sadly, reinforcements would not be able to reach the city of Yonna before Rhoanna's SOD.
After starring at the screen for what seemed to be hours on end
(or maybe it was 30 seconds), I came to the inescapable conclusion that this game was about to be over very quickly. We just didn't have the troops.

What we needed was a plan. So I decided that this is something that I shouldn't be doing whilst sober. At least it was a plan, right? Right? It wouldn't do the Ljosalfar any good, but it sure made me feel better!
So having stiffened my resolve and with the last of the sour mash in hand, I sat back down to bid our elven civilization adieu. I would begin the battle by passing out promotions. Unfortunately, in my inebriated state, I would mis-click the wrong button. And wouldn't you know, all of these units would appear right out of the woodwork!
Literally ... out of the woodwork!
Ok, it didn't actually happen
exactly like that. A dialog box appeared telling me I can only use a world spell once. I said no, don't do it. But then I got to wondering what exactly a March of Trees world spell would do. And lo and behold, it would turn all of our forests into summoned Treant units. The downside to the spell is that all of those units would swallow our economy into a black hole of unit maintenance costs. But, it would hopefully save our bacon in the process.
The summoned Treants would only be available for 5 turns. Time was of the essence, so I sent the units south to defend our choke point city. Unfortunately, the Treants from our northern cities would never make it in time. Rather than letting them just stand around, I decided to make use of them ...
A two front war! The few Beeri units would be no match for the Treants ...
And with that, there was one less civilization.
Unfortunately, the captured Luchuirp cities would be garrisoned with Treants. There were not enough Warriors lying around for MP duty to fortify in our captured cities.
Down south, our Treants would hold the city of Yonna and eventually drive the Hippus invaders from Ljosalfar lands. Unfortunately, 5 turns would not be enough to take the fight to a Hippus city. As such, Rhoanna still refuses to negotiate peace despite her numerous losses. I decided to end my set just as our Treant force would vanish from the face of Erebus.
The war continues, with Yonna being defended by 3 Warriors. Another 3 units will arrive next turn, including our wounded hero: Gilden Silveric. If our cities continue to garrison Yonna with all available troops, we should be able to hold on until we jump. Of course, a medic down there wouldn't hurt either ...
On the research front, I completed Mining and began Bronze Working for the improved weaponry. I also managed to totally decimate our economy during this short set. We currently have 23 turns remaining on BW with 10% on the research slider. Cartography (20 turns at 10%) might be a better choice. It will open up the city states civic to reduce our city maintenance.
The save is attached and I leave you with an update on our score:
