OB07 - The First Shall Be Last

Our hero is laying down the smack in the other orc city while Beeri Bawl utterly, utterly fails to bring it. His lines of non-attack are shown below.

Actually, even if we don't attack him, there is a good probability that he could be our next civ anyway. I can't imagine that there would be another AI stuck on a peninsula with 3 cities.

That's why I think we should take him out as we don't want to come back as him (or do we?). If we think we're going to jump Rhoanna in score we can always gift her the new city.

... I agree with taking out Beeri, we don't want to end up as the Luichirp, especially not with those neighboors. Who are we going to end up as if we manage to kill off the dwarves? Elohim again (that'd be neat)?

I started the set off by switching research to Mining. We could really use the extra production from the mines and I noticed a grassland mine in the captured barb city of Tia'ran. Plus Jet said that Hidden Paths was an arbitrary choice and we really don't want the points from a classical era tech on the eve of our war. I also traded some Dyes with Rhoanna to pick up some more happiness.

I thought things were looking up when Rhoanna converted to Leaves on the very next turn ...

ob07330rhoannafolit4.jpg

Our hero, Gilden Silveric, singlehandedly captured another barb city.

ob07330ithraliaew4.jpg

Things were really going well those first couple of turns. And then I saw this:

ob07331rhoannasodmx1.jpg

Our hero was sent scampering for the south, still bloody and wounded from his battle with the barbarians at Ithralial. But alas, there was no way he would be able to make it in time. Our fogbusters would be withdrawn and all available units would beeline for the south. But sadly, reinforcements would not be able to reach the city of Yonna before Rhoanna's SOD.

After starring at the screen for what seemed to be hours on end (or maybe it was 30 seconds), I came to the inescapable conclusion that this game was about to be over very quickly. We just didn't have the troops. What we needed was a plan. So I decided that this is something that I shouldn't be doing whilst sober. At least it was a plan, right? Right? It wouldn't do the Ljosalfar any good, but it sure made me feel better!

So having stiffened my resolve and with the last of the sour mash in hand, I sat back down to bid our elven civilization adieu. I would begin the battle by passing out promotions. Unfortunately, in my inebriated state, I would mis-click the wrong button. And wouldn't you know, all of these units would appear right out of the woodwork! Literally ... out of the woodwork!

Ok, it didn't actually happen exactly like that. A dialog box appeared telling me I can only use a world spell once. I said no, don't do it. But then I got to wondering what exactly a March of Trees world spell would do. And lo and behold, it would turn all of our forests into summoned Treant units. The downside to the spell is that all of those units would swallow our economy into a black hole of unit maintenance costs. But, it would hopefully save our bacon in the process.

ob07335marchtreestv7.jpg

The summoned Treants would only be available for 5 turns. Time was of the essence, so I sent the units south to defend our choke point city. Unfortunately, the Treants from our northern cities would never make it in time. Rather than letting them just stand around, I decided to make use of them ...

ob07335beeridowas3.jpg

A two front war! The few Beeri units would be no match for the Treants ...

ob07337beeriscitiespz7.jpg

And with that, there was one less civilization.

ob07337beerigonecq4.jpg

Unfortunately, the captured Luchuirp cities would be garrisoned with Treants. There were not enough Warriors lying around for MP duty to fortify in our captured cities.

Down south, our Treants would hold the city of Yonna and eventually drive the Hippus invaders from Ljosalfar lands. Unfortunately, 5 turns would not be enough to take the fight to a Hippus city. As such, Rhoanna still refuses to negotiate peace despite her numerous losses. I decided to end my set just as our Treant force would vanish from the face of Erebus.

ob07340powerop6.jpg

The war continues, with Yonna being defended by 3 Warriors. Another 3 units will arrive next turn, including our wounded hero: Gilden Silveric. If our cities continue to garrison Yonna with all available troops, we should be able to hold on until we jump. Of course, a medic down there wouldn't hurt either ...

On the research front, I completed Mining and began Bronze Working for the improved weaponry. I also managed to totally decimate our economy during this short set. We currently have 23 turns remaining on BW with 10% on the research slider. Cartography (20 turns at 10%) might be a better choice. It will open up the city states civic to reduce our city maintenance.

The save is attached and I leave you with an update on our score:

Well done Conroe! That was some nice work.

As long as we can hold off Rhoanna, we should be able to sneak ahead as we grow our cities. The score for land doesn't come on-line straightaway (have to have possession of the land for 10 turns I think) so we should be able to get ahead of her soon. Whether that puts us in 1st or not is another thing. I would keep the war going even if we can get peace as it will be good to have some civs at war while we keep going.

Cartography might be the better research target as we may need City States to keep afloat but more markets might help us out.

Roster
Ozbenno
Jet
Conroe - Master of the Treants
Imhotep - Up
Diamondeye - On Deck

Heroic!

Forbidden Palace would also help. Our empire only has two centers of gravity. I'd just finish Bronze Working and then research Hidden Paths. Guardian of Nature will eventually get our score as high as it needs to go.

Epic saving, Conroe. Hopes are we won't end up with a completely ******** civ as our final.

... Simply epic, that short read almost made my day :)

I couldn't get to it today, it's on my list for tomorrow. :)

Lurker Comment:

That was really impressive Conroe. If that's not a perfect use of a world spell it's gotta be close. Not only did it allow you to fend off the attack and take over Beeri's cities to further your score, but once you switch again the AI Thessa won't be able to use it. :goodjob:

Speaking of the switch, I would expect some unknown "completely ******** civ" to be much more likely than your original civ. :p

Well, thank you. But the credit should probably belong to Rex rgis of Ter. There is no civilopedia entry for the world spell. A strategy article written by Rex details when March of Trees should be cast. I got lucky in that it came up first in the search results! :)

It is scary to think that there might be another AI out there in worse shape than Beeri! :hide:

I recommend the PDF manual for this mod. The official docs are still pretty lacking, unfortunately.

With the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday here in the US, I will be unavailable for next several days. I doubt the save will make it back to me, but please skip me if it does. We'll be returning on Saturday.

Sorry for the delay, but I was snowed under in work. The game itself didn't cheer me up greatly to...

In all my FfH games the AI I want least to see at my borders are the Doviello. Highly promoted very mobile army and as unpredictable as Monty. A real PITA. This game is no exception. Rhoanna tries another assault on our border city...

19538585wl9.jpg

We have nothing that can beat those Horsemen, except our hero Gilden Silveric. The problem is the mobility of these Horsemen, they can easily move by... therefore I check for peace.

Okay, no real offer here. Fight on it is then. Our prospects look dim though - Rhoanna is second in power, we're at the bottom.

As predicted we face problems in our hinterland courtesy of by-moving Horses. I can't hold our border city and defend our hinterland cities at the same time. It's trust to luck, but this fails...

However there is a lull in the assault on the border city. I withdraw Gilden and recapture Hyll.

At the end of my 20 Rhoanna is leading still by 30 points, but I fear she is not #1. A simple look at the demographics tells us this:

87905561ka4.jpg

Things ought to pick up in the next set though - Cartography will come in soon, and we can get rid of a huge chunk of maintenance. This will speed up research greatly, and once we get to better weaponry the days of Rhoanna are numbered.

Imhotep

I know it's Thanksgiving in the US, but not in Denmark, eh? ;) :bump:

Uh I though I played and reported already  Will update in a moment.

EDIT:  this is so embarrasing! I wrote the report days ago but for some reason I didnt click "post" or my internet went dead.... So here's a quick recap:
Civ4ScreenShot0369.jpg

We get Cartography - and switch to CS. Great! Lots of income. I push our techspending up.
Also, there are a couple of Hippus otw to us:
Civ4ScreenShot0370.jpg

I dont remember if its now or later but I put an archer (with Gue I promo) on a forest hill, where the horseman attacks and withdraws, before the axeman kills our archer. This spawns a treant for us, I use our hero and the treant to kill the two enemy units before sending the treant south to attack the main incoming stack, which consist of 4 horses, 3 axes, 1 warr and 3 scouts. We kill off a horse with the treant, another horse goes home. Our hero then flawlessly kills the entire attacking stack (6 units!) defending the city (Hyll?). The Hippus scouts leave.

EDIT: This combat happened on the turn we got Cartography
We have this event on the way:

Civ4ScreenShot0371.jpg

We get BW. I notice a GP birth iafal:

Civ4ScreenShot0372.jpg

... And here's the ending; we are above Rhoanna but haven't changed civ yet. Might do next turn though as AH just came in:

Civ4ScreenShot0373.jpg

I'm back ... at least for a few days ...

Things are looking up in this game. Some well played sets! Since we are now ahead of Rhoanna, we have no clue how far we are behind the score leader. Imhotep's demographics shot suggests we could be quite far behind. I'm wondering if it would behoove us to put a stack together to go after that Hippus city to the south? Or maybe a Settler for some of that jungle to our west? I also wouldn't mind heading for whatever tech that would enable tech trading ...

I haven't seen this event before and I'm curious ... Did we buy the map? What does it normally reveal?

Lurking Comment

The event that occured, if taken, gives you a treasure chest unit. Zero move, and hidden from everything else. Its placed at some odd end of the world, and gives you a sum of cash or some rather unique item, depending on chance. Its akin to using the "Explore Lair" and ending up with a map as the result.
