Exactly. That unit icon seems to bear the characteristics of a tomahawk, not a generic ax.

Also of note: the unit appears to be full health, but there are only 10 individuals compared to the normal 12 in other melee units.

Scout units have fewer members too. Are they eight? Could this be a barbarian version of some advanced scout type unit?

There's more than just one assumption on the competing theory as well.

Really, you can simplify either to just one assumption.

New UU: there's a new UU

Actually, it would still have to be two:

First Assumption
There's a new UU

Second Assumption
Firaxis deliberately hid who it belonged to by making it a barbarian unit for the demo only
or
The new UU has a hidden nationality ability
or
It's a Barbarian UU

There's no way to explain it as a barbarian unit while still making it a UU without two assumptions. Note, the goal here is to explain everything in the minimum number of assumptions. It's always possible to add more assumptions (e.g., "because Firaxis was bored" could be added to every answer). However, it is impossible to explain both its barbarian status and call it a uu without two assumptions.

Really, the simplest answer (what we actually know) is that "it is a new unit."

I still have no idea what Rio and Sao Paolo are building. In HD they almost look like animals

Look like Pracinhas too me. Two men in army gear with weapons held up in firing position?

Also, I'm glad the Pracinhas were chosen simply because they have such a dope looking insignia, it's perfect for an icon.

I see it now! It felt almost like a Rorschach test before.

I think you're looking at the Archaeological Site in the lower left corner.

[discussion] This sums it all up perfectly [/discussion]

The only mines there are for Iron and regular mine.

You know what is the funniest thing about Brazil, it has the least creative color scheme I know. it's simply reversed colours of Arabia.

I think that UU with hidden nationality could not work as expected ;) Since only one civ could have this UU then it would be obvious who's attacking. I know that you still could attack without declaring war, but I think for everyone such attack would end in declaring war, since it would be clear who's woner of this UU.

Although with Militaristic CS gift that could still be quity funny

Nevertheless I doubt in that (since Privateers don't have hidden nationalities I don't think that any other unit will have).
