Just curious, what would happen if someone had just gotten 300 posts and had put in a custom avatar, only to see their post count drop below 300? Would they be stuck with that avatar until their post count went above 300 again?

Yep, the avatar stays. This exact situation happened with china444, and a couple of other people, IIRC. I remember seeing at least one person with 299 posts and a custom avatar.
I don't know whether or not they can switch to a custom avatar, and if they switch to a default one, if they can switch back to custom.
