Official announcement: Hot off the presses. Next Civ game in development!!!!!!!

I appreciate that perspective! You know, I was thinking to myself that "announcing that it is in development" seemed to me like it was far off, but logically speaking I know they've had to have been working on it for a long time by now.

Your spin on it makes me more comfortable.
This generates hype one or way or another and it would feel rather foolish to waste it on the annoucement of a new head of Firaxis. It just wouldn't add up.

That's... Weird, best described already as

“In development” is both vague and obvious, no?

For reasons discussed already, these projects take a long time to “develop”…no?

Like, why post that instead of either announcing the game or not, everybody knows it has been in development for years :p

I doesn't make sense to post this if the announcement is like 2 months from now, while it also doesn't make sense to post this if it isn't (so the post generates fake hype and frustration among people).

Hoo boy I see people hoping it's a new Civ Revolution game and I cannot comprehend why anyone would possibly want that

So, I am a little confused why the tweet omits "Civ 7", and my first thought was that this could be some kind of terrible off shoot...

However, the article by IGN is going with "Civ 7", so that's what I'm hoping for. 🫣

I can't even remember how Civ 6 was announced. Trailer? Screenshot? Gameplay?
There was speculation going back earlier in 2016, but it was officially announced on May 11th with this video:

Thank you! Very nostaglic. Got me in my feelings.

Interesting that all of the leaders shown were then playable in game. The same is true for all of the wonders/building shown (apart from the Chrysler Building, and One World Trade).

So this trailer was shown in May, followed by gameplay footage at E3 roughly a month later? I'm assuming E3 was in June that year, but I'm not sure. Then, released in October of the same year.

Young console players' first exposure to the franchise.

So obvious that it would be pointless to mention it. We never see Firaxis making offhand remarks like this.

I think we'll have some sort of announcement or more information soon, with actual gameplay coming later.

I'm really hyped now. I think we could see the game as soon as February 2024.

The next video was a wonder movie of The Oracle two weeks later (5/27). That was followed by a community Q&A mid-June (6/16), followed shortly by a First Look of America and a video about the District system (unstacking cities) (6/20). There were two E3 videos on 6/24 & 25 - a walkthrough posted previously by Marshmallow Bear and a Dev commentary.

I am hoping for North American holiday season 2023 (October or November 2023).

My inner pessimist says: October/November 2024.

Well. some companies did really kill their franchises like what Ubisoft did to the HOMM series tho...

HOMM 5 was nice and thriving, HOMM 6 was okay with mixed responses, HOMM 7 was a complete disaster it threw the series down to a burning pit.
To be fair (I’ve to recognize I’m much more fanatic for HOMM than civ), it was both fans and Ubi who killed it, by the statement above: HoMM 6 was the complete disaster, HoMM7 started to correct things, but technical issues and fan response to a more low-budget approach killed it (and by low budget, it only meant re-using some models from HoMM6). And the premature death of HoMM7 meant the end of the series.

Civ is much stronger than HoMM, nevertheless, and as bad as a producer can be, 2K is not Ubi, therefore I hope that does not happen here, but beware if an effort is made, let’s say, to correct the AI, and we start nitpicking on other areas.

Just a reminder not to harass, coerce, or threaten any devs, playtesters, members of the media, or streamers/youtubers who may have a hands-on preview. They are probably under an NDA that prevents them from discussing Civ 7, either generally or in detail.
