With the announcement of an official NOCD patch for Civ III Conquests I had a thought. Firaxis knows that it takes a whopping 2 minutes for someone to get on *************.com and download a NOCD patch for Civ IV. They throw the copy protection on there to prevent little bobby from letting his friend install the game. They are very aware that people with the knowledge to download a NOCD patch will do it. So why not offer an official patch on their website that requires registration to obtain it? It would be safer for the consumer (no fear of exploits/viruses in the patch) and provide relief to those frustrated by having to constantly swap CDs, I know I am.

P.S. Don't fill my inbox with PMs asking where to get the NOCD patch, its not hard to find and I'm not trying to promote illegal acts here.

i dont think its illegal to use no-cd cracks..or give out links to no-cd crack sites (altough it can be against the boards policy)....its just illegal to use em with a game u didnt buy/ dont own.

as to why compagnys dont remove the protecion themselves (or dont install it in the first place duh)...i think on a lot of % of the ppl it does work...also a LOT of money and research is spent every year to improve cd copying protection..its a real bussines with several large compagnies (securerom, safedisk).
also its not a given that a no-cd crack will appear...for the latest splintercell (has been out atleast half a year) theres still no easy way to crack it (i found it impossible).
but yeah most games (if not all) eventually get cracked.

Aye it is annoying that the only people who have to hunt about for disks to play are the people who pay for the games pirates just crack them.Although like you I crack all the games I play drives me up the wall hunting for disks.
