I believe, considering recent events, we should establish which time zone our country will follow. Having a standard time zone is *necessary* for elections and determining the end of terms. Below is a proposed article to add to our Code of Standards to make Greenwich Mean Time our official time zone

L. Fanatikan Time
...1. Time in Fanatika shall be kept according to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT.) All dates and times in the Demogame should be posted using this time zone.
...2. This rule specifically applies to elections, private investigations, chat schedules, and beginning/ending of terms.

Please discuss any complaints, comments, or suggestions you may have about this proposed law.

Please
a) insert CR's after 20 chars of width :-)
b) also insert that the week starts on Monday, 00:00 AM GMT

we should also discuss using military time-format, to preve AM/PM confusion when using times (00:00-23:59)

I believe that it was always standard to use Military time in accordance with the GMT as a basis for all CFC forums, including the Demogames of Civ3. I also thought we had that written down somewhere.

I also believe that Sunday being the first day of the week has also been a standard. That why the t/c schedules were "scheduled" to be posted on Sunday and be official for that week. There is no reason to change this, as far as I can see.

I would not mind using the world/military time format :)

cyc: hmmm. it IS in fact stated that the schedule is posted on sunday for the FOLLOWING week. (see pi-thread).
as such, it was implied MONDAY is the start of the week :-)
so i also think no change should be done as MONDAY should be kept as start of the week :-)

(also, the one created fanatika in 6 days, and rested on the 7th(!) day... so the last day of the week is sunday...:-P)

You dis, as assuming that Monday is the start of the week. So far, I have seen no support for your interpretation of that standard.

So, we have one who is loyal to THE ONE...

What would an official start-of-week do for Fanatika? I see no need for establishing this.

Back on topic, I like the setting of an official timezone

Octavian: Read the PI-Thread. There you find the reason.

Bill: Read the rule. With Sunday as first day of the week.

Lets say a president changes his schedule on sunday the 1st... the new schedule would come to effect on the 8th! Is that what you want? Well it is what would be our rules with Sunday as the start of the week!

the rule in fact intended to make the change effective on the 2nd, which means the week starts on monday :-P

which btw is STANDARD FOR GMT.
(not to confuse with UK-time!)

@dis. I have read the rule, and I disagree with you.

Rule:
Post on Sunday for the NEXT week. What needs interpretation here?
Sunday=1st. Next week would be starting at 8th.

so please go forward and post a example of YOUR interpretation.

@octavian: we have a rule discussion for new rules here. no case for the judges.

If we hung Dis from a tall tree on a Thursday and he hung there for the following week, we would actually be talking about the days in two distinct separate weeks. I use this example, Dis, to show you your semantics do not hold up here. It means the week following the Sunday the schedule was posted, until the next schedule is posted. It's pretty simple.

Well, and as you say sunday is the start of the week, the week FOLLOWING a sunday is not starting with the next monday... as i said.

Of course, Europeans and Amercians have different ideas of days in a week (so I've read). I.e., It's Sunday, Dec. 1st, and tell an American and European to meet you in 3 days... the American will meet with you on Wednesday, Dec. 4th, but the European will meet you on Tuesday, Dec. 3rd. That's because "Sunday, Dec. 1st" is counted as day 1 for them. That's just an example of the differences that occur.

Where on earth did you hear that? I (being, inspite of the best efforts of successive UK governments, a european) would do as the American in your example does, and turn up in approximately 72 hours. Same with most everyone I know - except the those few who wouldn't turn up at all due to excessive laziness/forgetfulness. :D

@ct: exchange day with week in your above statement, and its correct.

say a european on sunday to meet monday next week, and they will miss each other by one week :-) the european will be there the next day, the american one week later.

Well, that explains both World Wars....

Well, I believe we should specify GMT as the clock, to insure no confusion. And I have no problem with using a 24-hr clock, after 23 years in the military.

As for the Great What Day Does The Week Start On debate, I am not sure that is as important as making sure the rules on such things are clear, or at least explained. The rule disorganizer is citing can be interpreted in different ways, and we should try to not take a US-centric view of interpretation. Perhaps a re-wording to the effect that changes posted on Sunday take effect the following day, or some such. This is why diplomats and lawyers get paid big bucks - they need to make sure that all parties to an action (like a treaty) understand it to mean the same thing to all of the parties.
