Oil company gives £31m to global warming disinformation groups

Not really, it's part of a broader pattern of funding libertarian and conservative groups, groups which are probably actually just honest pig-ignorant kooks rather than deliberately lying charlatans.

In other words, they're people who disagree with Margaret Thatcher.

It's funny how Margaret Thatcher suddenly jumped on the Green Bandwagon immediately after the Green Party got record numbers of votes in the European Elections. What a truly amazing coincidence

EDIT: Interesting she gave a speech in 1988 though, she must have seen the writing on the wall. I was just too young to vote (I wouldn't have voted Green myself, it was just a protest whereas I thought it was more appropriate to protest against the Conservatives), but most of my friends were eligible to vote and they all voted Green.

I dunno, I'm willing to bet the old monster is was honestly and genuinely concerned - there was nothing to gain politically back then, even if there was a record Green vote. There's plenty of conservatives who are concerned and wanting to act on climate change, let's not pretend it's a simple left-wing issue or whatever. The Liberal (ie conservative) spokesperson for the Environment here in Australia wrote his Masters thesis on pricing carbon back in 1990.

Since way back, in fact.

Margaret Thatcher's interest in global warming dates back to earlier in her prime ministership. Unlike most politicians, she had some professional acquaintance with the area, graduating in chemistry from Oxford University and working for a period as a research scientist.

I think because it is coming from Greenpeace it should be immediately dismissed. PROVE those groups are spreading misinformation. Would global warming really be bad for winters and poles? Probably depends on POV. So yeah, screw Greenpeace. They are borderline eco-terrorists anyway

The mid west may have warmer winters but warmer summers too.
Rainfall may increase but the rate of evaporation increase faster so more water for farming will be required.
The rainfall may be increased throughout the year - there may be increased rainfall in the spring leading to increased flooding then not enough water in the summer for irrigation or navigation.

Would anybody be surprised if oil companies were indeed doing this?
They want to ensure that their business model doesn't get derailed in any way, right?

Lobbying is a good investment, lots of bang (future bucks) for the buck. So is propaganda.
