Old About Avatar's and How to get one!

If Lyonesse wanted to "trade down" career-wise, and give up her important job as a mom, she could easily be a professional graphic artist!

I think Plexus may be "pro." - he sure sounds like one anyway.

I've gone and read though this thread and the previous one which started it in the last two days and I just want to say WOW. You guys (and gals) are quite talented. I can resize stuff without problem but the guides you have provided are quite helpful. I'm not really looking for an icon but just wish to give you all my praise on such excellent work and to wonder how many of you do graphical work for a living?

This is just a hobby for me. I, like Lyonesse, have just learned all of this through trial and error. And thanks for the compliments. It's good to know that our work is appreciated.

Wow. I'm flattered, coming from you and all.

I'm just a High School sophomore with limited artistic talent.

But thanks for the compliment. :D

Well, I'm finally getting close so that I can put in a request to you great guys and gals here. If you're bored, and perhaps feeling magnanimous, I'd love an avatar that combined the logos of my two favorite teams: the red sox and the 49ers.

Thanks in advance!!

That rules! Now I'm gonna have to go do some spamming to get the last few posts. :)

Thanks Plexus. :thanx:

Hello people. I am about to grow up into the 300 post mark, yet alas do not have the artistic skills to produce an avatar. Would one of you kind souls help me please?
Being an old punk rocker I felt it would be nice to have safety pin. Either a photo or a simple white outline of the pin on a black back ground. Anyone help please?

I will be back on Monday if anyone has any questions.

As an old punk rocker myself, I'll be glad to help out... Lemme know if this does the trick.

You're welcome. Although I too am only self taught in computer graphics, I know enough about it to recognize talent and expertise when I see it. :D

And Beyond Good and Evil totally rocked! Great game, visually and playwise. My only complaint was the short length... (and the final boss, but I always have a hard time with that!).

Hmmm well this took me wayy too long to do, but I sort of got it to work. I followed Lyonesse's instruction through Adobe Photoshop 7 and while it showed the checkerboarded background it still showed as white in other programs, I then opened it with PSP 6 (where it showed white) and set white as the transparent color which seems to have fixed the problem. Just seems like alot of steps for an icon I may or may not use.

Hmmm... seems wierd that the transparency wouldn't save correctly. What was the other program you tried opening it in? Just curious why the steps didn't work. I know that if you try and open that "gif" in MS Paint it will show a white background where the transparency was originally. Strange to say the least...

Awww thank you! So much to do here at home right now, I don't think I could deal with a job AND the kids :) Have to say, though, that I have thought about "going pro" a few times ;) Maybe once they are all a bit older :goodjob:

I'm sure it worked just fine. There are many other programs that don't recognize Photoshop's transparency, and will display it as simply a white background - QuarkXpress is a good examle. Also keep in mind that if you flatten a Photoshop image, whatever transparent background you had will fill with white (this is one reason why I often save clipping paths with my Photoshop files).

Nevertheless, as far as the web is concerned, many file types - such as .gif files, retain the transparencies just fine. So for avatars, I think the directions work great - which makes me curious too as to what went wrong... hmmmm...

I am impressed that anyone else actually played this game. It didn't sell overly well :(.

But the game is awesome, just got it a few days ago.

@Cedric Greene-

Remember when saving as a gif, to check the box that says "Transparency":

The reason that it didnt sell well was because there were other games available at the time (Jak II, R&C: GC, Kya, Metal Arms etc...) that were slightly superior due to their length mainly... It is still regarded as a very good game though.

I haven't had a chance to play Jak II... Beyond... was $19.99 brand new compared to Jak's $40 price tag, so I got that and loved it. I think I'll check out Kya next though, as it's done by the same team who did Beyond...(iirc)...
