Well..
1) I don't see why that computer couldn't handle it. What platform is it running?
2) If it can't handle the current version with all its many code streamlines, an older version is probably LESS likely to be stable.
C2C is built off of some other very involved mods so from the basis of it it was quite heavy. And those came with some significant bugs themselves, many of which have been resolved. We've added a lot of content but we've also gotten things to run a bit smoother as well. So I'm interested to see why your 4gb comp can't handle this mod when my wife's 1GB laptop using a 3GB switch could...
My OS is Windows XP SP3, and the latest version of C2C closes Civ4, even without an error message. 3GB switch crashes the video card recognition (screen gets VGA and 16 colors) But an older build of C2C used to function (i don't remember which version).
I had the same problem with the Video Card thing. It is possible to reduce the 3GB to, say 2.8GB. It worked for me then.
Vid card specs please?
It must have at a minimum (pixel) Shader 2.0 and 512Mb of DDR2 ram. Anything less is 90% no go.
Also since you are using XP 32 bit SP3 do you "Let windows....." run your video performance? If so you Need to set it to Custom or Adjust for Best Peformance in the Video Performance popup you get from Computer Properties/Advanced/Video Performance Screen.
You also need at least 2048MB allocated to Virtual memory. Again found in the Video Performance section thru Computer Properties.
If you are allowing Windows to run your video you are losing to much vid ram to the OS.
What I've outlined is what I've been doing for over 5 years of CIV IV BtS RoM/AND/C2C mod playing and I've never had to use the 3GB switch. Although the 3GB switch is effective.

How do I do this on Windows XP?
Did you try the Video Performance set up?

Have you tried using a very small (20x12) viewport?
JosEPh_II gave a detailed description some posts ago:Where are these settings?
BUT, As for the Video Performance settings you get to them by Right Clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties at the bottom of the list.
Once the System Properties popup is displayed select the Advanced tab.
Top section will say Performance (you have to be logged in as Administrator to make adjustments). Click on the Settings button.
This brings up a new popup called Performance Options:
1st tab is Visual Effects. This is where the "let windows choose what's best for my computer" radio button is. You Do Not want Windows to to do this.
Instead select Adjust for Best Performance, or Custom. (Use Custom If you feel comfortable making the selections it offers, I only use 6 of the 16 available)
Next at the Top click the Advanced tab. Under this Tab select Programs under the 1st 2 sections.
Which brings us to the final section Virtual memory. It will list what has been set for the paging file size on your computer. With 4GB of ram you should have this set to at least 2048MB.
If it is lower click the Change button. This brings up a new popup. Select Custom size:
Then set Initial size(MB): to 2048 (can go as high as the amount of Ram in your system (4096MB)
Next set Maximum size(MB): 4096
Then click the Set Button.
Let the computer do it's thing. And Very Important! Once computer has taken your new values click the APPLY button at the Bottom and then Click the OK button. This Must be done in this order for each popup that is still on the screen until all popup windows are gone. (total of 3 popups)
After you have done this restart you computer.
I strongly recommend you write this all down for future reference.

viewport = zoom?
Viewports are a new feature in C2C, which allow you to only display part of a map at a time. This allows you to save LOADS of graphics memory, which is what your issue most likely is. I was able to run C2C for a year on a machine worse than yours, so it's doable.
Have you done the 3GB switch yet? Without that you may be in trouble. See the FAQs thread on how to do that.
C2C doesn't even open.
