On polyglot threads

If this ever gets off the ground I'll change my username to: Herschel Shmoikel Pinkus Yerucham Krustofski.

Babelfish translation:

however, I am not possible many trolls in Dutch then because there are two Dutch mods (and no custard minus gene :cringe: ), it, however, is able help in certain arguments but then yes, since vele poeple nevertheless only English have been possible has seen it to that the complete idea no zooi landlord is.

hi ,
with a lot of errors , ... ;) bad translation into english from babelfish
think about you being able to write dutch , okay flemish for you , some one else in spanish , etc , ...
and think of all those civ players who cant speak or write english or who are afraid to do so due to errors they would make , ....
Have a nice day :)

We already have moderators who can make at least reasonable translations of most European languages (and Japanese). And Bablefish does "tolerably" well for those who don't. ;)

But this is an English-language forum. We have many, many posters here for whom English is a second language. (And many (most?) of them write better English than many of the English-monolinguists ;)) If you want to discuss Civ here, you do so in English. Most posters make allowance for 2nd-language speakers. If you want to discuss non-Civ (i.e.: Off-Topic), then there are plenty of forums around that are available in different languages -- no need to visit a Civ site for that.

(And transparent attempts to get on the Mod Staff here are rather humorous.)

Padma, old boy, how can one dare to accuse me of something like that! ;)

Just playing out some good old rivalry between those Protestant hippies and we. :D

We had a Flemish one in the past though, in the CivII forum, DuckoffFlanders i think.

vlamingen = vla min gen = custard minus gene

 pwned by Babelfish

You see, you're telling me that we can already do that with the current staff.

But this is an English-language forum. We have many, many posters here for whom English is a second language. As Dabur already said, there's lots of "civfanatics" who don't register here because of the language (don't know English enough to post here, they're to too lazy to post in English, they don't want to post because of shame and other reasons) and there're no decent civ sites in other languages (with the exception of civfanatics.ru). Me, for example. I came here looking for a spanish civ site. Moreover, civfanatics.com is an international site, not an english-speaking-areas-centric one.

I said that we should do this in off topic because of two reasons. First of all, I'm just asking for a thread for each language as long as that speaking community is represented enough here, example: Portuguese speaking community is well represented here, ergo portuguese thread is allowed, Catalan speaking community isn't represented here (I'm alone :(), ergo that thread isn't allowed unless this changes. Only a thread won't disturb anyone.

And second, I think that this must be in off topic because they pretend to be threads where you can talk about everything in that language. You can talk on civ, but also other thing. I think also that they should be in off topic because a polyglot thread doesn't fit anywhere else. That would be different if I was asking for a subforum, but I'm just asking for language-specific threads.

(And transparent attempts to get on the Mod Staff here are rather humorous.)

Totally agree.

hi ,

agreed :goodjob:

but two things , one a forum in the OT , okay just a thread with the language , but as for the game istelf , why not make a sub forum in language X and Y ? so that gamers and those are the main target for such threads who actually are out in the cold now and who will not make the step due to various reasons , ... there would be many players who will join in there own languages cause right now there is no good site like fanatics , apolyton comes only in as second since when it comes to game downloads they hae nothing compared to fanatics , ...

apolyton did start with spanish about 5 or 6 years ago and till this day its still up and there is more activity there actually gamewise then in any other forum , ... ( !! )

there is a portugese brazilian site but thats it , except for the russian civfantics there is nothing out there that is as good as civ fanatics , ...

there are a few sites from now and then that pop up but they have a short live cause they dont have the downloads and such , ...

i know many Israeli's and a lot of french speakers who visit here but who dont post or even register , simply cause they do not speak the limbo or are afraid to be toyed with ( yep it does happen )

on average there would be at least a few hundred other language speakers each day online , ... not bad if they each click a few publicity links or adds , ...

Have a nice day :)

What's the point? You want a thread where everyone that knows Italian can discuss... what, exactly?

what do english speaking people talk about , ..... ;)

its a civ site , .... so guess

people that speak other languages do want to make mods , scens , etc .... just like we do , so by given each language a sub forum of its own those people who speak an other language could post here , share what they think , get help with this and that , ....

there will be only benefits from this , and it would expand civfanatics and most importantly allow for other language speakers to express themselfs on civ matters , in other words they would get a home , ....

So one thread for all that stuff? One thread would cover everything the Italian speakers could want to talk about?

I think an Italian-language forum would make more sense. Or, post on CFC in English.

Hi ,

may in the OT section one thread could do it , but for the game there should be a forum in each language , cause they will want to keep a difference between civ IV , revolution , tactics , etc , ....

and an OT thread might as well be placed there , why not , ...

Have a nice evening :)

That's a good idea, but it doesn't look like CFC is the place for it. You could make your own non-English Civ forum at invisionfree and advertise it in your sig, maybe?

hello , its not for me , ... ;)

forums like that will fail , they come and go , why , cause they dont have the downloads like civ fanatics , they dont have the knowledge and are not having any house name , no news , people from all over the world , etc , ...
so they fail after a few months , ...

and why not , why is CFC not the place ? look at how many people from all over the world come here , .... ( !! )

But there are already Civ sites in other languages. The Russian site was mentioned; there's civilized.de for the Germans; civ.org.pl for the Poles (these are all on the CFC main page); and Apolyton has a Spanish section.

What about adding the actual translation in the report or, if it's too long, and idea of what is actually meant there?
You're missing my point. How are we to trust any translation put up there by you, or someone else, or by some software?

And whereas CFC is an international Civ site; it's also an English language site. As Lucyduke has suggested, it'll probably be easier if you just set up a new forum to cater to whichever language(s) you'd like and advertise the url in your sig. :p

If anyone managed to find their way to the CFC forums and thought enough of them to join they probably understand some level of English, otherwise it's all pretty useless to them. If they can't make spectacular turns of speech no one is going to ridicule them and all it will do is allow them to gain confidence and practice.
