The thing about wonders is to build the right and affordable ones. I believe they are sufficiently powerful a part of the game to be detrimental to intentionally ignore.

I agree with Aelf; wonders shouldn't be totally ignored... they are worth the hammers if they suit your situation. But trying to go the other way and "build it if you can" will get you killed when you're at your skill limit and you invest in a stupid wonder (like hanging gardens when you have six food resources, one luxury resource and no religion!)
