OK... so, I had a quick qeuestion regarding the version of XCOM players have. Please note, this is not meant for console wars, so please keep those out of here. I just want to know who plays the game on which platform. When you answer the poll, if you could also post a response if you would like to expand, tell how you feel about the version (or compare the different versions) or give your gamertags if you like so we can find each other online.

As for me, I have the XBOX version. I do plan to get the PC version eventually, but I am happy with the XBOX version as it stands. For those that are interested, my XBOX handle is Serious1977.

PS3.

Would have gotten PC, but PS3 was the only copy my mom could find for my birthday in the entire town I live in.

I only played once, I'm not currently playing (not much replayability for me). PC version. I figure if the game is moddable (I'm not sure if it is), then PC is always the way to go. Although it was difficult to find a PC version. In fact, I couldn't find a PC version. Best Buy had the special edition, but I wasn't interested in paying an extra $10 for crap I don't want (and I'm glad I didn't because I'm bored of the game already). Fry's and Target did not have the game. So I downloaded it on my slow, crappy internet connection for 2 1/2 days.

Most stores will order it in or mail it to you if you buy it online too (at least Future Shop does, and they are owned by Best Buy). Not too mention Amazon. As for the OP< its not even a question which platform I'll eventually get it on.

PC all the way. I dont own a console, never have done, and never will :). I think in general the interface and everything is ok on the PC. I have played far worse when a game has been built across all 3 platforms (Skyrim, GTA etc).

I wonder how they compare. I know Firaxis has sworn up and down that the PC version is different than the console version. But still, they wouldn't be the first studio to promise that.

Not read to buy a new laptop yet. So I got it for the 360.

I think this poll might be a bit skewed. This being a Civ website, most of the user here are probably mostly PC gamers.

You make a good point, but the intention of my poll was not for scientific matters, really. More so to find people in the community that I am a part of who have the game on the platform that I do. I, myself, intend to get it on PC eventually as well. But for now, I am using the XBOX version, which has been great. So if any other XBOX users are out there, feel free to friend me. Maybe we can meet up sometime and play a couple online matches...

Hmmm... is there anybody else on these boards that has it on XBOX???

I'm on xbox :D i wanted it for PC but it doesn't work on xp :/ it sucks. I finally completed it on ironman yesterday, so proud ;D its my favourite game in a long while!

Cool... feel free to friend me. My gamertag is in the first post.

I just wonder why everyone else thinks the game is so great except me.

The game is missing something, and I can't say what. Sure it's flashy in the beginning, but after completing the game, why play again? I have been trying to motivate myself to play again, but I have given up. I just have no desire to play the game. The same cannot be said about the original (a far better game than the remake).

I think playing it without ironman is/can be boring. Im having a blast on my classic ironman at the moment. I thought the original didnt really have much in the way of replay, aside from skill level. Ironman adds a whole new dimension to it I think because your mistakes are permanent.

I'm hoping modding can make it interesting. Any good mods out for it yet? Like I said above, it's the best reason to have the PC version.

The game is "mediocre". It's a safe product that risks very little. I understand why Firaxis has taken this approach, but ultimately the game suffers from it. I'll try breaking it down into a few brief general points:

  • The game is linear
Firstly, you are being bossed around by your staff--in particular Chief Officer Bradford. It takes away a key component of the experience, the notion that you figure things out and take command. Bradford holds your hand like a worried parent. And the fact that the bossy characters are somewhat fleshed out, leaves the impression that you are almost not needed, because they surely sound like they could manage XCOM themselves.

And secondly, the strategic gameplay is mostly about hard choices. The game picks your options, and you choose whichever you prefer. Some options are even scripted, forcing you down the linear path. You know that during the first month you get 2 abduction missions, a council mission, and a UFO mission (not counting the "intro" mission). This all ties together with the additional strategic options (research and engineering), making sure you do not progress too fast or too slow. The game holds you in a rather short leash.

  • Strategic gameplay and tactical gameplay are poorly integrated
The hard choices in the strategic gameplay can render the tactical gameplay completely pointless. There are almost no options in the strategy layer to influence what kind of missions are offered and how many. There is no real snowball effect when you manage the strategy (or the tactical part for that matter) perfectly; you are still offered the same few missions each month. Missions are merely checkpoints in the linear campaign. I believe you can win all tactical missions flawlessly and still lose hard in the strategic game.

The tactical part is where XCOM shines. The strategy part feels like an odd addon, unattached and linear.

  • There is no Alien vs. Human battlefield
Finally, and this is a design choice I simply do not understand: The tactical game is not about a group of aliens versus a group of humans fighting. There are not two teams against each other. There is only a single team (the player) advancing through spawn points. When I play, I don't hunt aliens, I hunt spawn points. I think I miss the feeling of beating an AI instead of just beating a game.
While I did (and still do) enjoy the game, it is, as you point out, missing something. Perhaps the above points can help direct you to what that something is.

I agree with all those. It's not as bad as Dragon Age 2 with enemies dropping out of the skies (only on the one mission type), but I don't get the impression aliens are moving around the map in between my turns. It lowers the immersion factor.

I don't think they boss you around, only in the tutorial. I don't really have any problems with that.

My main problem with the game is taking away choices to make the game seem "harder" and more tactical/strategic. The one rocket per mission is what really bugs me (later 2 rockets). There is no reason for it. I don't like the path Firaxis is going down. They did this with Civ5 trying to reduce the number of choices. I don't agree with it. Completely opposite of what they did with a game like Alpha Centauri which allowed many choices. I realize they had to do some things to increase difficulty and tension, but it's not my up of tea.

The good thing as I mentioned above, is I think some mods can add "more" to the game. Because right now the game feels "bare", and feels like it's missing something. More techs, more weapons, more destruction, I want it all.

You are not alone.

I realize that it is, in some areas, a good game, but not a game for my taste.
Mostly is it decently produced, but I dislike many of the design decisions. The complete lack of any actual strategy game being the major one.

I've played through it on the 360 and it's reasonably good fun, but there's not much replayability, other than a steep difficulty curve. The game needs a lot more variety in the missions.
