One Last Roll of the Dice

Regarding the game, It's a bit strange seeing us in war against three nations and not building any units. Does Vandal really need a harbor? :D I'd also like to have some ships in the north so we could invade Mongolia, but I guess there's no great hurry for that. That island is mostly junk anyway.

So I guess the plan is to get AL, Railroad and Combustion while finishing our current infra builds and then producing more troops. We're not ready for Korea, English or Spain just yet...

I'd like to tech AL next and time our golden age to finish factories and coal plants quickly. Another reason is that I'd like to switch to SP sooner than later. We might even get four gp's for another golden age, if we really want ;) Settling GP's feels like a vaste at this point.

Edit: Another reason for AL I forgot: I'd like to build units and it makes sense to build infantry and not rifles.

IIRC, I started the harbor in Vandal because it was creeping up on the health limit and I saw growth potential. But to answer your question, no not really.

IIRC, I started a half-as*ed build up of military in the north to eventually go kill/vassal Sury and Genghis. It won't take much and I didn't want to shift the units. I looked at Mongolia and thought, "Why do we want it?"

We're not building military as we are waiting for AL to come on line. I also have this fascination to see how far one can promote units. I'm more a quality v. quantity person. :smoke:

I agree to switch to SP when the GA starts.

Suggestion: flip RR and AL. Then if we go to war and get invaded we can rapidly shift the troops. With the GA, we should be able to finish both quickly. I was running out of stuff for the workers to do. I don't feel all that strongly about this so if you want infantry first, go for it.

Combustion feels like the key tech at this point. Destroyers and transports. <voice of Yoda> All else, flow from this, it will.

I suppose we just want to get those three technologies as quickly as possible, and I'm not sure whether State Property's city maintenance elimination + international :traderoute: outweighs the loss of all of those free specialists under Mercantilism with Representation in terms of overall scientific progress.

The order of the three; I don't think that we can go too wrong with any option, although Combustion probably should come after Assembly Line for the reasons already discussed.

Best of luck!

Set focused mostly on capturing and burning junk cities, so apologizes for the dull report

Preturn

Go through our cities and generally everything seems fine, altthough I did make some minor changes.

Turn 1

Physics grants us "free" GS, who is ordered to take a nap. Select AL to be next for the reasons stated earlier.

Our privateer is indeed killed by the English.

Turn 3

Burn Egyptian junk city.

25.jpg

Turn 6

All the killing gets us a GG who is sent towards Vandal. I'd use him for second chariot medic.

Turn 7

AL -> RR.

Paris borns a great prophet, but I'll avoid shrine after all. Another golden age is probably more benefit to us. Speaking of golden ages, I start ours with scientist, merchant and a spy. We make anarchy free revolt to State Property, which doesn't give huge impact, but I'm sure it will be major once the real warring starts. Workshops get +1 food as well.

Turn 8

We finish Kremlin, but I'll avoid US for now.

Keep one Mongolian city.

26.jpg

And take the third one from the Ottomas. I didn't have patience to edit images of two earlier captures, but we own the island now. Barbarian city was burned a bit later.

27.jpg

Turn 10

Another junk city goes to flames.

Turn 11

We get a scientist from Marseilles, so we only need one extra gp for another golden age. Marseilles will produce the next one as well.

Mongols lose another city.

28.jpg

Turn 12

Egypt is eliminated from the game.

29.jpg

Turn 15

We learn Combustion and I choose Biology next. We could learn it in 4 turns.

Mongols have one city left.

30.jpg

And so do Ottomans, but we have two fleets on the way. It's most likely an overkill, but I didn't want to take any chances.

So the plan is probably to eliminate Sury's last three cities and then conquer rest of the world? Sounds like a lot of work :D

Excellent work! :goodjob:

I take it with all this burning of junk cities that we're going for Conquest now rather than Domination? ... or you don't think anyone will try to settle these spots so why waste units defending them?

Now that Wang, like Churchill, is also pleased, should Isabella (Madrid's Church of the Nativity) be the next 'target' (maybe along with Suryavarman?) instead?

Not that I mind at all, but I believe our turnsets are 10 turns.

I'm good to go for Biology, but after that are we fine to turn off science, or do guys feel that you need Artillery and/or the Free Great General out of Fascism? I personally don't see the need.

I kept cities that had some sort of food resource and burned the rest. But we can probably win by vassalizing everyone (conquest).

That would be fine by me.

Oh, you're right of course. I played my set in two halves and completely forgot...

After Biology, I think it's time to shut down research and start to buy units with US.

A lovely looking set!

A GG could be used build a for a future Military Academy. That could come from Fascism.

I'll look at all this later but I'm a bit grimmy ATM.

Cam on deck

Grandad >>> up(swap with Meiz)
Meiz >>> just played(swap with Grandad)
just making sure I'm not holding up the game. :crazyeye:

ditto

Excellent work!
ditto again

or do guys feel that you need Artillery and/or the Free Great General out of Fascism?
need? no. But, please, sir, may we have tanks? :joke:

Didn't realise I was up. Will try to get a general plan up tonight. Haven't looked at the save yet but I agree that Izzy is our next tardet. Our eastern forces can carry on taking islands etc whilst we get set for Izzy. I guess we're talking Infantary for this rather than a quick strike with our current forces.

I'm ok to mass buy some units after Bio.

On the Conquest v Domination win I have to say that my last SG (completed :() was a Conquest win on a continents map. It stopped being fun by the end if you went for the "pure" conquest as it was just tanks razing city after city. However. If we do decide on conquest then I suggest that we go "pure" as leaving anyone else alive is for big cry babies with no stomach for the slaughter of inocents.

In fact lets go Conquest!

More later after I look at the save.

Again, I'll respect the majority decision, but I'd be happy enough to just get our Domination or Conquest-by-vassals win done. I feel that we have the tools available now for such a win, and would like to finish the game with an earlier victory date.

likewise. I'll go with the majority, but I have no objection to style points (like tanks :bounce: )

Agreed. Late game warring in civ is pain in the ass anyway :p

Ok looked at the save and will pretty much just carry on as Meiz left off.

Shut research down after bio and switch to US at the end of the GA.

What about trading lib to Wang? Can get quite a lote of money for it.

Will move to finish of Mongles, Ottermans and maybe Sury if I get time.

Start to think about Izzy.

Will play tomorrow I guess (sorry for slowness but my internet provider went down yesterday evening).

I most want a faster win then I'm fine with Dom. As I said before late game conquest is boring.

Have played. I think this might be my first actual turns of war in this game!

Can't report now as bed calls. I will tomorrow.

Here's the save though.

So few rivals left standing! :) Nice work.

I'll wait for Grandad's report, but a few thoughts;

  • I feel that we should get some arterial railway lines happening through our core empire. For instance, to get an Infantry from Vandal to one of our rally points takes seven turns, so as much as State Property Workshops are great, I'm inclined to focus Workers on our founding continent on unit mobility for a while.
  • Builds to generally focus on Barracks and units.
  • Either turn off research or get Artillery in three turns and then turn off research? I lean to turning off research now, but happy enough to get Artillery if the roster wants.
  • Marseilles to run Merchants, Artists and Spies ... hurry Intelligence Agency and/or Security Bureau builds for the Spy slots. Golden Age likely in Admiral's turnset.
  • Finishing Suryavarman will be easy, but I'd like to be better arranged before taking on Spain. I can't see it remotely going wrong, but we're a bit disjointed in terms of unit positioning because of the (highly successful!) Mongolia / Khmer wars.
