One Last Roll of the Dice

135 turns to pay for themselves I think ... 336:hammers: to build with Forge to produce 2.5:hammers: per turn with Forge. I could be wrong / massive flaw in my reasoning though!

Well if you want to use facts and numbers to base decisions on....

Marse should probably get one for the extra priests if we want them.

Declare on Mansu only if Winnie asks.

I'd be fine going on Mehmed now.

Skip the cathedrals.

Divert for Commie if there's a good chance to get it first.

Go ahead and play. ;)

Summary:

Marseilles popped a Great Engineer against the odds. Lyons going for a Great Scientist. Paris going for Great Prophet. If they fail, Marseilles' next :gp: is not far behind. Nobody's made a move towards Communism yet, so that Great Spy is still up for grabs.

We're at war with Mehmed - Hatshepsut - Genghis Kahn, and razed Bursa. We're about to take Ankara, but (much like Pre Rup) wasn't sure on razing versus keeping this city. In the meantime, trying to get our Macemen up to City Raider III.

Rifling is in, and two turns from Steam Power. I've been bouncing between 30% and 50% science due to cash-hungry troop upgrades.

Done nothing with our naval stack, other than adding a couple of Galleons to it.

The Privateer has been reaping 9:gold:/turn off Egypt unchallenged.

Mansa Musa's down to just his crummy capital, while Wang Kon has just declared on Isabella. Churchill got Versailles (Brighton), and unsurprisingly we got The Statue of Liberty.
_____________

Opening Turn | Turn 330 | 1550AD

Paris runs a Priest, Marseilles loses its Scientists for other specialists, and Lyons runs some more specialists to get its :gp:/turn up.
Our Medic I Chariot goes to Rouen to appease the citizenry.
Most of our Siege units get upgraded to Cannons. Under-promoted Macemen get City Raider promotions.
Kumbi Saleh swaps to a Galleon.
Djenne gets a reorganisation so it completes the Courthouse in 3 turns so it may then get moving on Wall Street.
Drop science to 50%:science:

Turn 1 | Turn 331 | 1555AD
  • Replaceable Parts > Rifling
Christianity is successfully spread to Yasodharapura.
Marseilles pops an against-the-odds Great Engineer (sent to Paris for resting);

Paris rearranges its :gp: ratio by employing a Merchant instead of an Engineer.

Lyons: Salon > Christian Temple
Vandal: Galleon > Maceman
Yasodharapura: Drydock > Christian Monastery

Drop science to 40%:science:

Turn 2 | Turn 332 | 1560AD

Churchill captures Awdaghost (Mansa’s capital, leaving a single city), while also completing Versailles in Brighton.

Statue of Liberty! Run through the entire empire deselecting Spy specialists.

Paris: Statue of Liberty > Christian Cathedral (for the Priest slots!)
Orleans: Cannon > Maceman
Rheims: Ironworks > Grocer
Vandal: Maceman > Maceman
Kumbi Saleh: Galleon > Harbor

Turn 3 | Turn 333 | 1565AD

Vandal: Maceman > Maceman
Chartres: Cannon > Drydock
Djenne: Courthouse > Wall Street
Isvarapura: Christian Monastery > Bank
Dijon: Courthouse > Barracks
Angkor Thom: Courthouse > Barracks

Privateer collects 9:gold:/turn for a while off the coast of Egypt.

Bureaucracy > Free Speech

Turn 4 | Turn 334 | 1570AD

Golden Age ends.

Orleans: Maceman > Cannon
Tours: Grocer > Christian Temple
Vandal: Maceman > Maceman
Walata: Granary > Christian Temple
Yasodharapura: Christian Monastery > Jail

Science down to 30%:science:

Turn 5 | Turn 335 | 1575AD

Lyons: Christian Temple > Cannon
Marseilles: Christian Cathedral > Salon
Vandal: Maceman > Cannon
Kumbi Saleh: Harbor > Galleon
Gao: Christian Missionary > Spy
Angkor Wat: Christian Monastery > Christian Temple
Hariharalaya: Bank > Grocer

Event causes a drop in our already unpopular popularity with Isabella (-1).

Science falls to 20%:science:.

Turn 6 | Turn 336 | 1580AD
  • Rifling > Steam Power
Massive troop upgrade of City Raider III Macemen plus two Musketeers to Riflemen.

Rheims: Grocer > Rifleman
Timbuktu: Bank > Salon
Rajavihara: Christian Monastery > Christian Temple

Well, Mehmed old buddy, all good things must end …

Bursa’s defences are pelted away. Three Macemen at 86% each win. A single defending Ottoman Catapult remains.

Science back up to 30%:science:

Turn 7 | Turn 337 | 1585AD

Paris: Christian Cathedral > Rifleman
Vandal: Cannon > Rifleman
Dijon: Barracks > Christian Monastery

Maceman at 99% wins.

Bursa is razed.

Spy settles in Ankara.

Turn 8 | Turn 338 | 1590AD

Mehmed sends a Galleon towards Djenne. I opt to upgrade a Crossbow and Musketeer to Riflemen, and fortify the city.

Orleans: Cannon > Settler
Vandal: Rifleman > Rifleman
Grenoble: Salon > Christian Temple
Kumbi Saleh: Galleon > Frigate
Angkor Thom: Barracks > Rifleman

The Galleon built in Kumbi Saleh is upgraded and at 68% defeats Mehmed’s invading Galleon, so in hindsight those upgrades were a bit wasteful.

Science back up to 50%:science:

Turn 9 | Turn 339 | 1595AD

Rheims: Rifleman > Rifleman
Chartres: Drydock > Galleon
Pre Rup: Forge > Barracks
Nagara Jayasri: Courthouse > Christian Temple

Turn 10 | Turn 340 | 1600AD

Wang Kon declares on Isabella.

Lyons: Cannon > Cannon
Vandal : Rifleman > Maceman
Avignon: Grocer > Lighthouse
Gao: Spy > Christian Missionary

Espionage mission > Support City Revolt in Ankara succeeds.

Cannon at 83% withdraws, nine Cannons at 98%+ withdraw, seven Macemen at 99%+ win, two Riflemen at 97% and 99% respectively take out two Ottoman units in the field. Ankara is ready to be captured ... keep or raze?

Science down to 40%:science:

In hindsight ...

After all of Grandad's effort, I kept the navy back, but we can take our pickings once we get more ground troops together to put onto the boats if we do want an offshore invasion.

Possibly I could have built more Christian buildings before others, but I was mindful that at any point we'd complete Scientific Method and waste partially-built Monasteries.

Gao's Spy and Marseilles' Salon were two that I was unsure of. The Salon will open up another Scientist slot as well as adding an Artist, which could be a good or bad thing in our main :gp: Farm.

The Ottoman Galleon incident - I should have attacked first, and then upgraded those troops if required.

I've been producing a few Riflemen out of Vandal and Rheims, but Macemen are still available if we want to give them City Raider II and Cover promotions out of these cities, rather than Combat II Riflemen. It's costly though.

Christian Missionary in Angkor Thom has just hit town.

Some screen shots;

Nicely done Cam H.

I reckonn keep rather than raze. I know its settled on the gems but at this stage I don't see the point in resettling. Maybe see what buildings it has before making that call.

Getting the navy round to Mehmeds land so we can hop over to Mongolia at some point seems sound.

Oh what an unhappy world!!!!

On different note I will be out of the loop from thursday till tuesday as I'm going to a festival in Wales (Greenman) so skip me till I check back in. IO should get to comment till thursday morning hopefully. Right of to find my tent.....

Very solid play. I shouldn't say it, but don't see how we could lose this game :)

I guess tech plan should be Assembly line -> Railroad -> Combustion.

+ SM -> Communism (and maybe Biology) once someone has both SM and Liberalism.

Looking at the save and some thoughts spring to mind.

Djenne can steal a hill from Lyons to speed WS.

On the tech front I'd rather go Rail before Assembly as our rifles are fine for a while yet but RR will massively pump our Mfg just in time to help produce lots of new infantary! Workers should be able to improve most of the tiles in production cities around the same time we finish Assembly.

Apart from swapping those two techs I agree with Meiz. I wonder how many times I've said that

Can we not Vassilise Mansa, Sury, Mehmed or Hatty? I'm fine with Vasselising Genghis :)

I suggest this as there is a lot of nice Islands to our east that if we had them ourselves we could place some decent cities rather than the AI rubbish that is there now. This would train a nice force for a Wang pincer attack (coastal Wang and through England). Coastal Wang!!! Hahahaha

SP is going to be massive for us.

Haven't looked at the save yet...

Tech Path: RR > AL > Combustion (divert for Commie when AI starts research)
Keep the GE for another GA
Keep Ankara
Skip more maces and go rifles
When to go SP?

I shouldn't say it, but don't see how we could lose this game
Well, it is my turn...

On technology path:

I am completely divided on this, and will support the roster. Initially I was inclined to Combustion before Assembly Line, as our navy is relatively weak while our army is strong - and therefore we should work on the weak link (get Destroyers), but the case for Assembly Line is very compelling: Factories, Infantry, and The Pentagon will each lend a huge amount of momentum to our situation.

Great People:

'Yes' ... we need three different types of Great People. When we take Istanbul, we also pick up the Mausoleum of Maussollos for extended Golden Ages. Although our pools are very muddy; Paris is shooting for a Great Prophet, Lyons a Great Scientist although has a good chance at a Great Merchant, Marseilles a Great Merchant. As before, Communism's Great Spy is another fall-back in case we get 'say' nothing but Great Merchants. In terms of timing the Golden Age, I'd suggest just as we get the last of either Assembly Line or Combustion, so we can turn off science and just rush out troops under Universal Suffrage. I presume by then we'll have Communism (State Property) and The Kremlin (cheap rushing).

War:

I'd keep all three remaining Ottoman cities on our landmass. I wouldn't go for capitulation prior to then.

Grandad - right now nobody will vassalise to us. Thanks also for the advice on the potential skip.

New Maces versus New Rifles:

We do seem to be in such a powerful position, that continuing to spend hundreds of gold for building new City Raider Maces for then upgrading to Riflemen and eventually Infantry is possibly becoming unnecessary. We already have around 20 City Raider promoted Rifles or Maces as it is, and maybe we can afford to taper this off and instead produce Combat-promoted Rifles out-of-the-box, and focus our commerce on science rather than gold for these new Maces > Rifling upgrades. Our existing City Raider II Macemen are an exception, and once our Macemen hit City Raider III, then they're ready for an upgrade. Happy to go with the group verdict here.

Yasodharapura:

Noted before, but given Suryavarman planted a Scotland Yard there, I opted to build a Jail, and a Security Bureau could go there next. It's just an easy way of building :espionage: without the slider. This might be the one city to run specialist Spies, although it's been earmarked as a production hub. Despite all of this, I didn't touch the espionage weightings during my turnset.

I'm aware tha no one will Vassilise now. It was more of a general in the future comment.

I'm happey with what ever tech path we take really.

Without number crunching, I'd thing factories + coal plants would increase our production more than railroads. Then again, we get both techs soon, so the order doesn't really matter :)

I like the sound of rush bying with the help of Kremlin. Haven't really done that before. If we go there, I'd rather save money and produce rifles instead of maces.

I see. Understood. :)

Well, I'm thinking that if we're going for Assembly Line first, we may as well only part-build Riflemen, and instead go for Cannons or Galleons, or build research / wealth. Newly produced units may as well be Infantry (rather than Rifles) if we're not going for City Raider promotions through newly built Macemen.

Revised Plan:

Tech Path: RR > AL > Combustion (divert for Commie when AI starts research)
Keep the GE for another GA
Keep Ankara all three remaining Ottoman cities on our landmass. I wouldn't even consider capitulation prior to then (even in one of my more idiotic sets)
Skip more maces and go rifles build research / wealth.
When to go SP? In the coming GA of course.

Without number crunching, I'd thing factories + coal plants would increase our production more than railroads. Then again, we get both techs soon, so the order doesn't really matter
More on the order of giving the workers something productive to do.

Confession: I finally installed BUG correctly (I've played the entire game so far without it). Possibly an excuse for my idiocy? :crazyeye:

^ All seems good to me.

:goodjob: Congratulations on installing BUG. First thing I did was to turn off about two-thirds of its features!

Then again, we get both techs soon, so the order doesn't really matter

It's a reasonable point, especially if Communism continues to be a non-factor for our rivals and we put a bit more attention on :science: rather than :gold: accumulation.

Best of luck! :)

Sometimes things don't always go as planned... to make a long story short, I diverted for commie and went on a GP binge (decided to pick up the GS for Physics along the way). I made no progress towards any of my pre-plan goals on the tech path. On the plus side, Mehmed is gone on the mainland. Can't figure out why his vassals haven't freed themselves. We have a GE, GM, Gspy with a GSci due to pop on discovery of physics. Spent lots of worker moves roading for lack of anything better. Kind of went a little crazy with research in the core cities. I flawlessly lost a tri. My only loss IIRC. I took some photos and will edit and post save later tonight. Rheims is building the Kremlin. We should have a nice discussion about what to do next.

Goals:
Tech Path: RR > AL > Combustion (divert for Commie when AI starts research) fail
Keep the GE for another GA check
Keep all three remaining Ottoman cities on our landmass. I wouldn't even consider capitulation prior to then (even in one of my more idiotic sets) check
Skip more maces and build research / wealth. check, core is building research
When to go SP? In the coming GA of course. check, GE, GM and GSpy; Gsci coming soon

I'm pleased to get those three Ottoman cities. :)

Mansa Musa ... gone???

I'm inclined to hang onto the Great Engineer to hurry along The Pentagon when we do get Assembly Line, and burn the Great Spy, Great Scientist, and Great Merchant when we're best poised for the Golden Age.

I guess other things will be a bit clearer when we see the save.

Looking good for the civics switch to SP and possibly US. I guess with the Kremlin US is the way to go. Maybe try FM and if its not as good as Merc then switch back before the GA ends.

Nice warring to take those cities. Are we i a postion to hit Genghis soon? Vassilise him but not Mehmed (see previous comment about Islands to our east).

I'm off in a few hours so this is my last post till Monday evening. Enjoy and good luck!

Mansa Musa ... gone???

Winnie asked us to declare, so I did. I attacked the SE city and razed it. Winnie then razed the SW one.

Save is now attached to the previous post.

Mehmed is doing OCC. City is far to the SW IIRC.

Are we i a postion to hit Genghis soon? Vassilise him but not Mehmed (see previous comment about Islands to our east).

Need a little consolidation and healing.

Looks like Meiz is up, and swapping with Grandad.

Three Coal and an Oil! Nice. Oil's badly positioned on one of our irrigation chains, but c'est la vie.

Mehmed is proving more resilient than at first thought. I was pretty sure that once we took those three cities, that he'd be prepared to capitulate, if not sooner. Presumably this is because of Genghis and Hatty.

Our troops are out of position relative to our navy, but I suspect that we can still piece together an invasion force from the units in the central empire and to the east for Fish-Horse-Wheat island east of Vandal. Given we've got so much gold on hand, this could be done with upgrades. Just a thought that we can accept or reject.

That Privateer looks doomed with those two English Frigates nearby. I'd give it Flanking promotions and hope for the best.

Djenne's Wall Street build could get a push along if it stole the Mine off Lyons.

Given our position, I'm not sure if we really need any development in terms of espionage, however Yasodharapura would benefit from an Intelligence Agency and a Security Bureau if we still did want to rack up espionage points.

We can also run through our city garrisons and delete a lot of the Ancient-Classical Era units that are just costing us money now, contingent on whether or not we want them for Riflemen upgrades for a quick attack on that island east of Vandal.

In terms of Great People, as I said earlier, I'd keep the Great Engineer (Nicholas Tesla), and hold back on the Golden Age (Spy - Scientist {Physics} - Merchant) until we're close/have Combustion and Assembly Line. Both Paris and Marseilles are competing to pop the next :gp: that looks likely to be a Prophet (probably Hindu Shrine) out of Paris, or a Great Merchant (probably merge into Djenne) if out of Marseilles. If we get a self-grown Great Scientist, I guess he merges into Paris, while a Great Engineer could be used in several ways; join Nicholas Tesla in getting The Pentagon done in one turn, or merge into Rheims or Vandal.

I'm torn on this. yes, we can take them, but do we really want or need to? Our main decision for this set is whether we want to transfer the troops to the east or shift the navy to the west or north.

I lower my head in shame. I saw that and failed to act on it.

I think we should do this if for nothing other than style points. We should steal a tech before the end of the game.

I agree with Cam that we should reserve the GE and spend the others.

I'm mulling over attacks on hatti, genghis and mehmed. What can they really do to us? Nada. Thinking we should just prep for Izzy or Wang. The bloodthirsty side of me is coming out and saying "Kill Izzy"

Cam, I know you really, really want destroyers, but there's an argument to keep pushing.
