I'm really diseappointed when i see Firaxis put only 16 civs overall(even if there's the custom button),it's not enough and moreover and the worst 7 civs in a game.

7 civs... that is a bit surprising. I thought Civ3 would contain maybe a max of 10 Civs in the same game.

it´s good that it´s only 18 civs, cause i don´t want to meet small nations like the canadians or the scots, i mean this is for the big guys.

but just 7 civs in the game? a little bit freedom should we players have.

I would like to see 10 civs in a game but frankly, I think there should be no more than 20 civs overall. I only want the major civs from an ancient starting period like Babylonians, Sioux, Chinese, Indians, Celts and not Poles, British, Canadians, Americans, and the sort.

Unfortunately the answer to that question lies only in the minds of Sid Meier, Jeff Briggs and Brian Reynolds. Prhaps in the near future they may endeavor to divulge the truth about this great mystery

Yes this is a little disappointing isn't it? I would like to see up to 10 civs in a game with about 30 to choose from. There were abviously programming issues here because I don't see why Firaxis would have lowered the number otherwise.

I think that the lack of civs is due to the new proprietary units (each civ having there own unique unit) and that some of the civs just don't really have such things or atleast they aren't really famous. I mean what unit would the Babylonians have? Will there be the Persian Rugmaker? I think the civs that didn't make the cut are the Babylonians, Indians, Persians, and Sioux. Not really sure about the final tribe I would say Americans but they are already guaranteed and the French probably have the same guarantee so maybe the Aztecs but that would only leave the Americans in control of 2 continents on the world map.

Why? I'd love to see a Chambourcy yoghurt laucher unit

Just kidding.
Anyway, indeed, there's is room enough for at least 10 civs to compete on a large world map. But I think the actual reason is tachnical. They'll have to improve the AI while maintaining a reasonable turn duration. So with too many civ, maybe even a Atlon 1GHz can run slow.
Concerning the civ varieties, it's not a problem. If there's no civ-specific unit (like in AoE 1 and 2), what's the point in throwing in too many civ? The custom option is there in fact.

Well, if that is the reason they're doing it, then this is just one more piece of supporting evidence in my argument that specialized civ-specific units are a bad idea!

If it's not the reason, then I couldn't even speculate on what the reason could be. I can't see that it's a programming problem. I don't know much about computers, but is adding new civs--or even just keeping the number we already have!--really the sort of thing that would make the game harder to program? Would it affect memory or space or speed or anything like that? I don't actually know, but considering what they're doing with computers these days, I rather have to doubt it.

Unless they are doing a very in-depth and seperate AI for each leader of each civilzation then the only other logical reason for the cut back is to create an advanced AI to be used for controlling the Unique Units(I have decided to refer to them as UU's from now on) which I would imagine would take up some RAM space while processing and could very well be the reason for 7 civs at a time. I totally agree on getting rid of the UU's. On an unrelated note I was going through my copy of CGW again and noticed there was a picture of Gandhi(along with Mao, Ramesses(sp?), Abe, Caeser, Joan, and Elizabeth) in there so it looks like the Indians made it.

I would guess one of each color was on the chopping block, then keep 2 around or add the Incas and keep one of these.

White - Celts (Sorry Hippo! But ever since Larry Bird retired, they stink <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif" border=0> )
Dk Blue - Vikings (I would have sacked the Whine & Cheesers, but if Joan of Arc was there... and you've got to figure Napoleon will make the cut)
Yellow - Spanish
Lt. Blue - Rugmakers
Green - Babylon
Purple - Sioux? (Again, I would have axed the Indians, but if Mohandas made the cut...)
Orange - Hannibal and Co.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Spain and the Vikings survive out of this list.
