Only one unit on a tile

the problem with 1UPT is limited space, we need at least double huge map to make it run smoothly.

An Idea came to my mind last night, instead of making much bigger maps that slow the game why not making another sub-hexes layer (with hexes that are half size of tiles hexes) where units can move into that layer not the main one (units size need to be scaled down for this). This way we have double movement room on same map size. But I guess this is too much to ask for a patch because it is a core change in the game not a simple one.

Something like this?
A finer grain hex?

1upt is fine, yes there are some challenges but these are mostly for AI to manage. Yes there are some really frustrating ones as well where if an AI you have open borders camps a tile you want to improve you cannot go there with you worker.

Civ5 in general is significantly weaker than civ4bts. Of course, people will tell me to wait for civ5bts-type expansion and this is what I am doing. But I will just add that they decided to go from scratch on civ5 but missed quite a few lessons from the efforts they put into civ4bts (UI for example, diplomacy, religion imo, etc.)

Learn to play the game, then.

Would you 'patch out' the Queen's ability to move diagonally in chess because it 'makes no logical sense'?

Chess 1.01 Patch Notes:

- Removed Queen, replaced with third Rook.
- Knights no longer able to move over units. Seriously, were they riding Pegasii or something?
- Pawns made less ********, and now able to attack forward instead of at diagonals.
- Castle Move removed for balance reasons.
- En Passant was too complicated, so removed and replaced with a more streamlined 'attack forward' move. Pawns now only attack units right in front of them.

1 UPT is annoying to be sure. If you are parking a unit, it's best to park him off the road. I can't believe they thought it all the way through. There are somethings, like moving to a tile with a rival on it. I get griefed by the AI every game. They just stand on the roads. In useful places. It's ridiculous.

I would patch IN a better way of handling 1 UPT. One that takes into account defenseless troop ships. One that doesn't allow the AI to grief. One that allows for routine movement through the empire on the limited number of roads that are forced on the player.

Good day sirs.

$10 says this patch breaks saves for those who got the Deluxe Edition.

I think a simple solution would be to change the limit from 1 to 2/3. This is a bit more realistic as you would generally want to have a platoon of units that cover for each other and the scale is a bit more realistic. For example, archer/catapult+spear-men combo. The ranged unit would hit anything slow like infantry and the spear-men would protect against fast units(cavalry) that broke through your lines.

Anybody like this?

First, weren't there more like 1,000 Greek soldiers defending the pass once the bulk of the army was pulled back? Second, do you consider a unit in civ to comprise a mere 300 people? So, an army of 10 units is only 3,000 individuals? If so, imo, any lack of realism has more to do with how you perceive unit scale than anything else.

I consider units in civ to be the size of a corps (up to 80,000 individuals).

....

So each unit in Civ5 is twice the size of the army that Alexander used to conquer the known world? And is represented by a single unit type, with all its limitations? When did the British ever field an army of 80,000, much less an army of 80,000 longbows? At its peak during the Napoleonic Wars it mustered only 250,000 men. That's a world power after the agricultural revolution several years into a massive war.

Until the modern era it was almost impossible to statically impede an attacker. There simply weren't enough forces available to create a continuous front until World War 1. It took literally millions of men with artillery that could fire many kilometers to reach the level of force to space on the Western Front that can be created in Civ5 in the ancient era. At least Civ4's extremely poor implementation of army combat allowed for some realism at the operational level. Civ5 is simply bad game design in that it doesn't work (see numerous threads about AI tactical deficiencies, pathing problems and why they cannot be fixed), and terrible game design in that it is the least realistic combat and movement system in the Civ franchise.

While the City States and other aspects of the gameplay are ones I despise, stacking alone is what makes me rage most about this game. Sure people hated seeing 30 tanks or helicopters approaching your border city in the past game, but you could counteract to that situation. Here in CiV if you want an entire army you have to spread them all out, which calls for different strategic methods and tactics.

Firaxis Games didn't make CiV to appeal to us. They made it to appeal to the younger people who have never played a Civ title.

Why is it so bad that you can't use your old Civ4 strategies? I think it's a refreshing experience...

Don't generalize. I played all Civ games (including SMAC and CTPs), and it does appeal to me.

QFT. I played Civ (original) for days straight. I've played each and every version/expansion since. I can't believe it took them this long to go hex, and I absolutely LOVE 1upt.
