I just finished my most challenging game of civ3 since I moved up to regent
Playing the Persians for the 2nd time (ever...) I was up against the
Babylonians, the Russians, the Zulu and the French.
Since I have not really adjusted my style of playing to any level (nor civ3 itself...?) I was a bit surprised to find myself hanging in quite well and keeping up with science.
Ran into the Babylonians first - did some trading. Was able to claim 2 sources of iron, then out came the immortals. War with Hammurabi
(Needed the space, the money and the resources.)
Unfortunately, the battlestats did not go to well for me - though finally, I beat Hammurabi. One down
Churning out some more Immo., while running into the Russians. I decided to claim some of their land, realizing that the French were becoming a considerable force.
War with Russia begun after contact with both Shaka and Joan was made. This war did not go too well because we were in the middle ages - alliance with France & Zulu lead to the destruction of Russia. 2 to go.
Using passive expansion technique, I filled up most of the area that became avaiable after the fall of Catherine. Time to contain the Zulu aggression.(He was polite towards me till I declared war...)
Mutual protection pact with France lead to the destruction of the fragile Zulu Empire by MIGHTY french forces
1 to go. Peace as a tactic. Reason: I felt unlucky in battle, and I reckoned the French had a larger army Research goal: Fission.
For some peculiar reason Joan did not want to vote for me as Secretary General.
Other options: Space Race or Histograph.
At this point I had an ever so slight lead in score (if you trust the scoring mechanism of civ3...)
Goal: Appollo. Meanwhile: Boost productivity.
It was quite a struggle to get ahead. I improved most of my mainland to keep up with the industrious french. Though they were even more industrious than I was.
I realized that in the long run France would have won the histograph victory. The gap was getting smaller and smaller.
completed apollo. Dared to lure a spy into Paris. Damn! They had completed 3 and had tech for 2 more. At that time I had tech for 3 and had completed 2. Trade! Luxuries for cash. Cash for research.
Treasury rapidly depleting.
The last few turns ALL but 1 city (Persepolis) were doing Wealth.
Treasury at +19
Finally - The Laser completed. Build: Planetary Lounge.
Persepolis reports: Part completed.
Here comes the scary part:
Immediately after my completion of the part:
The French have added the Planetary Party Lounge to their spaceship.
Now THAT is a close one if I ever saw one!!!!!!
Am I complaining...nah. But there is still much to improve in terms of strategy(-ies)
Wondering about the score?:
