I just finished my most challenging game of civ3 since I moved up to regent

Playing the Persians for the 2nd time (ever...) I was up against the  Babylonians, the Russians, the Zulu and the French.

Since I have not really adjusted my style of playing to any level (nor civ3 itself...?) I was a bit surprised to find myself hanging in quite well and keeping up with science.

Ran into the Babylonians first - did some trading. Was able to claim 2 sources of iron, then out came the immortals. War with Hammurabi  (Needed the space, the money and the resources.)
Unfortunately, the battlestats did not go to well for me - though finally, I beat Hammurabi. One down

Churning out some more Immo., while running into the Russians. I decided to claim some of their land, realizing that the French were becoming a considerable force. :( War with Russia begun after contact with both Shaka and Joan was made. This war did not go too well because we were in the middle ages - alliance with France & Zulu lead to the destruction of Russia. 2 to go.

Using passive expansion technique, I filled up most of the area that became avaiable after the fall of Catherine. Time to contain the Zulu aggression.(He was polite towards me till I declared war...)
Mutual protection pact with France lead to the destruction of the fragile Zulu Empire by MIGHTY french forces

1 to go. Peace as a tactic. Reason: I felt unlucky in battle, and I reckoned the French had a larger army Research goal: Fission.
For some peculiar reason Joan did not want to vote for me as Secretary General.
Other options: Space Race or Histograph.
At this point I had an ever so slight lead in score (if you trust the scoring mechanism of civ3...)

Goal: Appollo. Meanwhile: Boost productivity.

It was quite a struggle to get ahead. I improved most of my mainland to keep up with the industrious french. Though they were even more industrious than I was.

I realized that in the long run France would have won the histograph victory. The gap was getting smaller and smaller.
completed apollo. Dared to lure a spy into Paris. Damn! They had completed 3 and had tech for 2 more. At that time I had tech for 3 and had completed 2. Trade! Luxuries for cash. Cash for research.
Treasury rapidly depleting.
The last few turns ALL but 1 city (Persepolis) were doing Wealth.
Treasury at +19
Finally - The Laser completed. Build: Planetary Lounge.
Persepolis reports: Part completed.

Here comes the scary part:

Immediately after my completion of the part:
The French have added the Planetary Party Lounge to their spaceship.
Now THAT is a close one if I ever saw one!!!!!!
Am I complaining...nah. But there is still much to improve in terms of strategy(-ies)
Wondering about the score?:

Map type:Pangaea
Difficulty:Regent
Civs:(Babylon, Russia, France, Zulu) Random
Map:Standard size
Earth:5 billion years
Weather: Normal, Temperate....
Special:
Accelerated production
No cultural victory
No domination

Score: 3255
Xerxes the Magnificent
- IMHO: Xerxes the Lucky B******

Paalikles,

Look closely at your strategy elements that include producing wealth in cities. Almost always wealth will be a bad idea because the cash transfer ratio is too low and there is also a round off effect in each turn.

You can usually gain more benefit by:

Pre-building key components of the space race as high value items such as the palace. or battleships, or a great wonder, or any other big ticket item and then convert them over to the space race parts when the tech is enabled. If you master this technique, every space race component can be completed on the same turn you get the required technology and non of the AIs can match your multidimensional thinking process.

Instead of wealth, build the best units to use integer values of your production with minimum waste and the stockpile and disband them to rush improvements that increase cash, science, and or productivity in the cities where they can do you the most good.

Is this a sarcastic joke? Was Joan the only opponent left?

Blcg100: I only fight conventional wars. (And I fight only when I have to...) ;)

Cracker: Thnx. I always appreciate good advice. Though I feel that I am starting to get hang of the game, I still have some areas to improve.

S1m0ne:  :D

BTW: Will refusing to accept a flipping city improve your reputation? Has anyone examined this closely.
My general idea on this is that cultural flipping does not affect rep. - any thoughts?

I do not think refusing or accepting a flip city effects your reputation.

I always accept flips even if I do not want the city. Then just disband it or rush units out of it until it fades away.

Even in one city challenges, I accept flipping cities. Just abandon them immediately deny them from being used by the enemy.

another thing about taking a city is you can put it up for an offer to the civ again and ask what do you want to trade for it then sometimes they can offer some really nice stuff like tech, and gold other times they won't even want it back

not wih the new patch you cant you cannot trade for cities you can only give and recieve them

joan of arc evil? but she is always so nice w/ me! the russians the germans and the romans are the tough ones for me, they always get a masive (kind of outdated but big) army adn fight a looooong war, i always win ofcourse ;)......well unless they allie :O

although i've never tried OCC i would think that with only one city that my culture would be pretty inferior and therefore a culture flip would not be possible

I have not tackeled a OCC either but you culture should be higher, not wasting time building settlers or military. so your cultural building increase in value as the years edge on.
