orangeNES: Insert Witty Comment Here

I used GIMP- and I just merged the borders layer with the background layer before saving the file to a nonlayered .png and uploading it. However, they shouldn't take too long to remove manually by drawing separations between them and the coastlines, then flood-filling/paint-bucketing them with the appropriate colours.

And yes, if you would like to do so, you may 'steal it'. :p

Huh. I guess people really care about how pretty the map looks. Me, personally, I'm fine with Paint - but if someone goes through the effort of upgrading, that whatever, I'll take it.

That was fast, Iggy. What did you use? Where can I steal it? Are the lines removeable?

You can use MS Paint to make a map just fine. North King, the best map maker we have, uses paint.

The most important thing is to save the map as a .png not .jpeg

Because .jpg images save at reduced quality, and every time you reopen a previous save, the map degrades further. .png, on the other hand, saves at full quality, all the time. I use .png for all of my images.

Oh yeah, and for the example update, do you mean that you won't show what person is controlling the character? I mean if we all post a story except that guy, then we probably can guess who that guy is. Also, since there is only one sidar hero, and most of us know what that guy's agenda, I believe this is... Kinda pointless

thank you iggy.

I'm fine with the first map or Iggy's map, or whatever.... seems like lines on a screen will be the least important part..... but I am new.... so what do I know? :p

So long as the nations have begun tricksome diplomacy, I agree with you, Kyro. However, some others seem to care, so whatever - I'll have the free time to do it eventually.

From my experience, I'd definitely recommend a program that can use layers, and transparency. You can use layers for all kinds of cool stuff, and you may even *need* layers from time to time. I use photoshop, but there are many free programs as well. But no stress, if you see problem as you go, just switch.

Needs to learn using layers, I can only do basic stuff w/ gimp :(

For best use of layers look into DaftNES2: Throne of Destiny.
Thanks for info!

Jpg - Small file size - 400 kb file can be converted down to 40 kb, without you even noticing that it was converted (few things are bit blurrier). But it downgrades picture with every edit/save circle you do, Other idea is to create fresh Jpg file from PNG file and keep two copies of same map (jpg for people to see and PNG for you to work on).

PNG - Huge File Size, but allows editing without loss of quality. However, I don't like 1.4 mb pictures uploaded, sometimes it is smart to make two copies Jpg (for people to see) and png for yourself (or those who are interested) to edit.

@Lord_Iggy I like your map, I understand this bit more, as I can identify nations now.

you can just download GIMP for free which is almost as good
Get it from here, it is free, unlike photoshop. I prefer using anything that is free :goodjob:

@Abaddon Uhm, I cannot read those, I assume, "stomped" messages...

Sorry. I'm not quite sure what happened there!

NW, No interest in my new NES?

@ Orange:
As a mod, it will be much easier for you to work with map that has layers. It will save you lots of editing in the long run. For example FFHNES had hidden layer with resources that allowed me to see where they are, and to un-hide each one resource after it's discovered. Another example may be drawing/erasing a national border without damaging vegetation map.

That's what I do...

There. Half an hour I probably should have spent programming, and there's the new map. I appreciate the help/suggestions; however, I still used Paint for a cocuple reasons. First, it's easy and second, it's quicker than having to learn something fancier. Layers would have been nice, but with the simpler system I'm using they're not that big of a deal to me. Now that I think about it, I should probably add in city locations - as well as Yggdrasil and maybe Letum Frigus. Not right now, though.

That being said, I'm going to go back to the homework I should've been doing in the first place. Everyone that feels they deserve congratulation, take as much as will make you content.

A soft el’Hippi wind curled through the buildings of the small town on the bank of the te Mealthiel. It, like all other winds, did not stop on its way to the Central Grasslands, but we will. We stop at what can charitably be called a tavern, with strong horses of the Hippus tied to an arrangement of stumps. As the steeds merrily eat their grass, we pass them to enter in the tavern.

It is full of characters, both seedy and honest, but more of the former. A lone man is drinking in the corner, watching the door intently. He is drinking horse milk mixed with wine from far away (an acquired taste). He is a mercenary. He lives and dies by the coin. Many would disagree with his life, but he finds it fulfilling. Holding allegiance only to those who can pay for it. What is the price of allegiance? How much are a man’s actions? That’s what he was here to discuss.

Born on the plains of Hippus, this mercenary loved horses, particularly the way his hair felt in the wind. He had joined the army as soon as he could, but he felt their rules stifling. So he left, again as soon as he could. He joined a small band of mercenaries. His work took him all over the world. He quickly rose through the ranks, soon becoming leader of these men at the tender age of 30.

The man slowly turned his head from the door. Watching it had made his eyes hurt. Two men at another table were fighting over a particularly buxom woman. She was sitting, contemplating the two bulging sacks of money beside her, while the men shouted furiously. Pretty soon it would turn to the question of other bulging sacks…

A group of men were playing a card game they collectively knew the rules to, but weren’t sharing. Merchants huddled together, away from the rough regulars, waiting for the morning so they could go on to other lands. The rest of the regulars got on with their drinks, sharing greatly exaggerated experiences of the day with their friends.

The watcher looked back at the door just as a small man burst through the door. He hurried over to the mercenary

“Magnadine?” Asked the small man.

With a smile, he replied “Certainly.”

My background story.
