Orthanc's Creation Thread

@Spacer_One: Eh, one day I'd still like the experience of making a 3D model of the thing with POV-Ray. Are you also requesting that "Jack Oneil" from me or from Sword_Of_Geddon? That one might be extremely tricky to do with POV-Ray.

@TopGun69: That dhow image is inspiring, I'll definately have to get to that, eventually.

I am now getting to a request Sword_Of_Geddon made about a month ago for some fictional southeast asian ships. I'll make three of them, basically a small, medium and large warship. Expect lots of strange details, more bright coloring and maybe some pretty spunky hull shapes!

PS: Has anyone noticed how aaglo's been really inactive lately?

Yep, I have :p

1# I've been spending a bit more time with my gf.

2# I've been in Norway (Mo i Rana, to be exact).

3# I've had a couple of concerts to play in (meaning, some additional rehearsals).

4# I've been busy finetuning wh-mod :)

But I wouldn't worry too much, since we/you have Orthanc to entertain you here :p

Well at least you haven't abandoned us aaglo, but it does seem like I'm entertaining the entire Civ 3 Creation Community here.

Anyways, I'm starting work on the first Southern Asian unit and I realized I need to know a few things, preferably from Sword_Of_Geddon since it's his request:

Do you want arrows or cannons, or both?

Do you want sails or oars, or both? I have a neat idea of how I can give these things sails, since none of the boats in the images provided have them.

What should we name these things? I haven't the slightest notion of how Asian ships are named:sad: Just a name for this first one (I'm starting with the small transport) will do for now.

I am not sure to be honest what a good name for them would be. Lets take care of the method of locamotion and its attacks first.

Movement should be both by oars and sails. Although the orginal war barges only had oars, this represents a fictional natural evolution of those ships. Sails I think would be of the east asian type, rather than the more tradional.

Weapons...well since they will only be ancient era units, I think its safe to give them only arrows.

BTW, I'm making units too so don't think your entertaining people alone Orthanc...:)

Some ideas to kick around for naming of the asian fleet :D

One of the numerous Chinese words to designate the ship is the word 'ting'. The term 'you ting' means to travel at sea in a light boat and this became the international word for traveling in a pleasure boat: yachting. The word 'lounch' is the name of a Chinese war ship with wheels ('lunchaun' lun is wheel and chaun is ship.)

Alright perfect, so we'll have sails and oars, arrow attacks, and we'll call this first one simply Fune, making it a Thai Fune (pun intended:rolleyes: )

Anyways, not wanting to post without some contribution, here's the very little that I have.:D

I know most of my issues were at the very beginning, and were mostly due to incomplete explanations. I did pick it up pretty pick, I mean I had earlier experience with modelling programs, but not much.

What's surprising is for a program based entirely on numbers and formulas, a very non-numbers oriented person like me could get into it, I mean I only got a high fifty percent in math class last year!

Anywho, in comparison with other things (like that math class) this program wasn't really very hard to pick up, for me at least. Most of the errors you get frequently are quite obvious and very simple to correct, usually just a single letter or symbol needs to be fixed and it'll work. Plus, if you can't figure out how to fix something, you have infinite undo's, all you have to do is delete the problamatic text.

Your lucky, with Poser I only have one undo, after that the games basically tells me: "To bad, you shouldn't have done something so stupid to begin with now, so there!".

Does your program have the ability to import graphics of other programs?

You can import images as textures, but you need a special exporter, one that I haven't tried (nor remember the location of) in order to bring in meshes from other programs. That;s one of the limitations, POV Ray is fundamentally different from pretty much any other modelling program. It uses the mathematical formulas to make precise shapes, meaning there's no vertices involved, unless you're using the polygon shape.

I have a ship module, a viking ship of some sort called a Drakkar. Was going to hand it over to you, since you are skilled in the ship department.

Not completely sure about it, but I think «Drakkar» is a word only used in French to designate the viking's lonboat. It's originally a Norse word and it is the plural for dreki, which mean dragon. Most probably because of the dragon figure on the bow of their ships. It was the ship use for the invasions on the coast and for navigation on the rivers. The other ship used by the vikings was the Knorr (name given in French and English I think). It was a merchant ship used for sailing and at the opposite of the Drakkar, it was using more sail than oars. It is generally admit the Knorr was the kind of boat used to reach Iceland, Groenland and North America.. Simple etymological note.
