BREAKING NEWS: bin Laden surrounded by U.S. troops
12/13/2001
CNN and NBC
Osama bin Laden is believed to be surrounded by opposition and U.S. forces in a cave complex at Tora Bora, senior military officials told CNN and NBC News Thursday afternoon.
Afghan troops and U.S. commandos have surrounded the cave complex in Tora Bora where officials suspect Osama bin Laden is hiding with his al-Qaida fighters, the officials said.
U.S. officials said their best evidence indicates bin Laden is in the cave, but a senior officer admitted they didnt know for sure.
The official would not be specific about the size of the area bin Laden was believed to be in.
While acknowledging bin Laden could still slip out of the Tora Bora area, the official said, "Wouldn't it be a great Christmas gift if we can get him before Christmas?"
The report came on the same day the Pentagon released a videotape showing bin Laden talking with associates about the planning and details of the attacks on New York and Washington.
On the tape, bin Laden brags in Arabic he knew about the attacks beforehand and says the World Trade Center's destruction exceeded his hopes.
CIA paramilitary forces and British commandos were also helping to surround the caves.
NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reported from the Pentagon that defense officials believed they were closing in on bin Laden, and that he won't be taken alive.
