Iran’s IRGC takes US navy boats into custody in the Persian Gulf.

Pentagon says the boats were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain when the US lost contact.

Up to 10 U.S. Navy sailors have been detained by Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces.

The crew of two small Navy craft are being held by Iran, but American officials have received assurances from Tehran that the crew and vessels will be returned safely and promptly.

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook told The Associated Press that the boats were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain when the U.S. lost contact with them.

"We have been in contact with Iran and have received assurances that the crew and the vessels will be returned promptly," Cook said.

U.S. officials said that the incident happened near Farsi Island, situated in the middle of the Persian Gulf. They say it stemmed from some type of mechanical trouble with one of the boats, causing them to run aground. The troops were picked up by Iran.

Secretary of State John Kerry, who has forged a personal relationship with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif through three years of nuclear negotiations, called Zarif immediately on learning of the incident, according to a senior U.S. official.

Kerry "personally engaged with Zarif on this issue to try to get to this outcome," the official said.

Kerry learned of the incident around 12:30 p.m. ET as he and Defense Secretary Ash Carter were meeting their Filipino counterparts at the State Department, the official said.

This comes on the heels of an incident in late December when Iran launched a rocket test near U.S. warships and boats passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

The officials were not authorized to discuss the sensitive incident publicly so spoke on condition of anonymity.

This could help the GOP politically.

Hot takes?

Probably storm in a teacup. Expect them to be released shortly.

The article says they suffered mechanical trouble and one of them ran aground. If true, the Iranians didn't just seize the boats, and I assume Farsi Island is Iranian territory based on the name. I'm sure the GOP will have fun twisting this into something completely detached from reality though.

Yep, it's in Iran : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farsi_Island

So basically...American ships run around on or near an Iranian island, Iranians detain the crews. Diplomats talk it over. Which, as far as such things go, seems to be...the civilized and normal way of doing things?

Not that I expect this to stop the Republicans since doing things the civilized and normal way isn't their forte.

Not If Obama sell Iran weapons in exchange for US hostages.
The GOP love for arms for hostages.

And since escalating doesn't seem to be in Iran's interest given that the ink on the nuclear deal is just barely dry (and given that so many in the GOP want it rescinded), I'd expect them to play nice on this one.

Especially as Iran has stated the crew would be returned shortly.

Essentially a non-event, or would be if the news media didn't have a twenty-four hours cycle to fill, and the politicians weren't at a loss for what accusation to latch on to.

Sums up my view of it. Anything less than a full-scale invasion of Iran will be seen by the Republicans as proof of Obama's weakness, even though things seem to be going alright

The US apologised
The sailors have been released.

An hour or so earlier, and Prez Obama could have announced the release during the State of the Union address... Or did he and I missed it? I thought he just ignored the whole thing, basically treating it as a minor mishap ... basically some of our guys vehicle broke down and they had to spend the night at a "friends" house...

Wait...so both sides behaved in a sensible manner and resolved the issue quickly and without much fuss? What the hell has happened here?

It is obviously a conspiracy by the Iranians to help their fellow Muslim leader look good.

I think I read somewhere that the speechwriters deliberately omitted a remark on the situation in the SOTU address. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Navy might be more concerned with how well the IRGC availed themselves of the opportunity to inspect two US vessels.

Yeah... Diplomacy seems... I don't know, a little... Diplomatic maybe?

Maybe the fact that we have been involved with Iran diplomatically over a number of issues and have even struck some treaties with them (the Iran Nuclear deal) gives them an incentive to deal more amicably with us than say, DPRK for example.... cause I can pretty much guarantee that if the sailors were in DPRK instead of Iran that they would still be there right now instead of on the way home.
