The answer is Canada, who would have thought it.

Here are links to some sources of that information.
Navy

and

Air Force

Now who can tell me which country had the largest navy and
the 2nd largest navy?

For those who find the trivia question interesting, here is a
list of the amount and type of commissioned Canadian
vessels in World War 2, followed by the a link to the source which
also has photos and specifications for the types of vessels.

2 AMEER class carriers
2 'V' class (DD) destroyers
4 TRIBAL class (DD) destroyers
8 TOWN class (DD) destroyers
14 RIVER class (DD) destroyers
67 RIVER class (FF) frigates
3 LOCH class (FF) AA frigate
70 FLOWER class corvettes
41 Revised FLOWER class corvettes
12 CASTLE class corvette
8 WESTERN ISLES class ASW trawler
1 CEYLON class light cruiser
1 SWIFTSURE class light cruiser
1 PRINCE class armed merchant cruiser
54 BANGOR class minesweeper/convoy escorts
12 ALGERINE class convoy escorts
4 FUNDY class minesweepers
10 LLEWELLYN class minesweepers
16 LAKE class minesweepers

thats 334 ships in all, sadly the site doesn't list Canada's
submarine inventory. Here is the site link

****To make this post Civ3 general discussions worthy and
partially on topic - Does anyone else think the Monarchy
government type is under rated in the Modern and
Industrial ages? I personally play a Monarchy gov't
as soon as its researched and usually keep it that way
the entire game. You don't get war weariness and
8 units supported by a metropolis and a good draft rate.******

History fact.

Canada was also at the side of England during WW2, a full two years before the US got involved, because of Hitler's declaration of war on the US,on December 11, 1941.

About Canada, one of the main ships (out of 5) during the Normandy invasion was Canadian.
About Monarchy, the extra commerce I get from republic seems to outway the advantages or being a king.

Town class destroyers??????????????
I thought they stayed loyal to British classes?
course i never heard of any Town Class cruisers named ottowa or toronto. the ceylon class were pretty awesome vessels.

i think tribal destroyers ought to be a civ3 unique unit since they were so darn cool (4-twin mount 4.7" guns)

Killer, actually it belongs in the World History Forum.

Of course, there is the feeble attempt to keep it Civ3 related.

C'mon, people! what's wrong with putting history questions/quizzes in the history forum? Think they'll never get read? Think again.

That is because Canada is a British commonwealth.

This thread is history....quite literally :D

The really amazing thing with the Canadian navy is that it only had 6 ships at the start of the war! (I guess every pre-war sailor went on to command a ship ;) )

Didn't they try to train most of the population in order to prepare for a US d-day style invasion?
