So, yeah, this is like my "Overrated Movies" thread a while back. Name a band you think is overrated (as in, not good but liked by alot of people). Keep in mind something has to be rated well in the first place to be overrated, ;). Now, just because someone doesn't like your band doesn't mean you can flame them. Discussion is welcome, but NO FLAMING. Also, give reasons, not just "they suck so I hate them". Play nice.

I'll start it off; I think Lynyrd Skynyrd is really overrated. Musically, they don't have a lot of technique beyond a few "cool" guitar riffs, mostly it's really repetitive (i.e. Freebird). Plus, their lyrics mean virtually nothing.

Rage against the machine is crap. I don't care if their songs carry "powerful" messages, they sound horrible, recycling the same five lines over and over for a six minute song.

ABBA

xcl..

Korn, Limp Biscuit, N*sync, Back street boys, 98*, Gwen Steffani as a solo artist, Brittny, Agulara, Beatles, U2, Pink Floyd, Mickle Jackson, Aerosmith, Van Hagar

Limp Bizkit

I second Green Day. They make one "political" album and everybody thinks they're deep genuises. People forget they made a name for themselves doing 3 chord songs about stuff boogers and masturbation.

Although the musical community tends to think that Fall Out Boy is nothing more than a good marketing gimick...and not a very good (at least not musical) band...I want to state right here that I agree with them. Anybody who thinks they're anything more than a flavor of the moment, in my opinion, is mistaken.

I suspect the Beatles are a little overrated, but thats going to happen when you're so...highly...rated. I dont think very highly of Ringo Starr as a drummer.

Man downtown, you took ALL of my responses :p

ESPECIALLY Green Day.

I third Green Day. The music is mediocre and the lyrics are generic. It's a mystery to me how they got popular.

EDIT: I fourth Green Day. They are so hated.

This thread won't get interesting until people start criticizing bands that the CFC crowd, not just the lowest common denominator, highly regards. You know, like someone saying Radiohead is the worst band of all time, or something.

Cold Play, anything Ben Gibbard related

Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd.

They're good bands, I enjoy their music, and the longevity of the Stones is impressive. However, for them to live up to their reputations as far and away the greatest, they'd have to send listeners into a trance of absolute amazement at their sheer awesomeness.

But I take nothing away from them; they influenced many to enter the world of rock and roll, and that was quite good.

Do you have examples other than Free Bird? I think Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of the better Southern rock bands of the period (Allman Brothers probably beat them out), and I don't think that they're very highly rated outside of the rural South anyway.

Green Day, Fall Out Boy, P.O.D., Pink Floyd, The White Stripes, Linkin Park, Aerosmith, and AC/DC.

woah, did Green Day do something to you people? I don't think they're the best band ever, but they are certainly above average, IMO. Also, Coldplay and Linkin Park are very good bands, both better than a whole slew of bands that get more popularity/recognition.

The Beatles. I get nothing from their music at all, it all just feels trite to me. I'm sure they were influential and all that, but that doesn't mean anything to me - I judge them purely on how much I like their music.

Coldplay too - I find them dreary, mawkish, and perhaps one of the worst offenders in the ten-year 'Indie Ballad' trend of mournful strings underlying half-distorted guitar chords. I really do hate their music, but I won't rant too much since these things are entirely subjective and I've nothing against the band in general.

I popped in to say "U2", and I agree strongly with Green Day and Coldplay. The pop tarts, well, they're not really highly rated in the first place, although they generally suck.

U2 is hailed as the best rock band in the world. I just don't get it, their songs sound like cheap pop to me and Bono's voice is more annoying than Ringo Starr's... and that's saying a lot. Green Day is catchy but not because it's good, and Coldplay is tolerable until the whine comes in.

I don't understand why Green Day is not "good"

What do we mean when we say something is musically "good"?
