Own1 My First Hosted SG!!

Why do we research banking ? We hardly build any structures. We need cavs to clear our continent. Hopefully I can use it for trades. And why is lux at 40% ? Use specialists. By this I could reduce research by 4 turns and more cash coming in. Do not set up lux if only 2 or 3 cities need a clown. Build a settler in these towns to reduce the pop -> less unhappiness.

Only some highlights :

860AD : Russia completes Sistine's
England completes Leo's
We are in contact with Sumeria

870AD : Russia completes Newton's
Chelyabinsk is razed

880AD : England completes Smith's

890AD : Russia and England are industrial

900AD : Tours flips to Russia

910AD : Russia has Rifles
This does not help them : Smolensk is razed

930AD : Murmansk is razed
We lose Arkhangel'sk
England completes Magellan

940AD : Banking is in, trade it to Byzanthine for Chemistry and give 302gold
Trade banking to Sumeria for navigation

Next one : Please cycle through the cities regarding unhappiness. I forgot that. Sorry.

We urgently need an army for pillaging Russia. There were no cossacks yet, but they will soon appear and bring Russia into their GA. We have a stack of trebs and 10+ knights near Leipzig. I would advance to Leipzig and clear that area from Russia. Then go for their core. Maybe it is better to go straight for their core. I am not sure.

roster :

markh : played
lullaby : UP !
madviking : on deck

Yes, Smolansk and Murmansk were Russian towns. Smolansk was size 9. I took both cities with trebs and knights. Smolansk was a big risk as I attacked the rifles with only 1 or 2 hps taken from the trebs, but we have not much to lose now and knights retreat at least sometimes. I lost only 2 or 3. We cannot afford to lose that incense-city. Any player has to consider 3 rifles per city.
As soon as Russia has Cossacks we will have a hard time. We need an army to pillage their salpeter. They only have one I think. Maybe we will regret building the FP instead of an army with the MGL.
The advantage of fast movers like knights is gone. Artillery is the key now. Metallurgy is due in 10, so cannons will be available. If we get to cavs we have a good chance, but if Russia gets cossacks soon, they will run over us. We have almost no defense and I do not see any big chances to hurt them badly with knights and trebs.
In general we should have discussed more about research and strategy.

IBT:
Lose Ganogeh to Russia.

Turn 5, 1000 AD:
Take back Ganogeh.
Both stacks on their way.

Turn 6, 1010 AD:
More troop movements.

IBT:
Lose Kiohero to Russia.
Our Salpeter gets pillaged.

Turn 7, 1020 AD:
Take back Kiohero.

IBT:
Northern stack destroyed/captured.

I would. Only I'm not allowed.
Russians capture Ganogeh.

Turn 9, 1040 AD:
No chance ot get Ganogeh back.

Can't see any perspective here. Lost 4 cities to Russia while only destroying and rebuilding one.

THE SAVE

Own, this is not your fault. In my opinion this game was well winnable if we would have more discussed. One of our major faults was delaying contacts. Meeting the far away French as second was really bad. The Vikings were already at sight long before and contact was delayed, same with Russia. We could have taken out Russia well before they even got chivalry with better "contacting". Cossacks are a real pain. I played them twice and this UU rocks. We should have contacted our nearest civs first as otherwise you will be in trouble as we are now. This game will be over quite fast now, but I am ready to continue this one. If you guys are ready for another try I will be in. Hardly can accept a loss.

If you don't feel like watching the Russians razing cities, we can just quit here. This is an unpopular variant, and no strategies were developed, so we were the guinea pigs. We should have thought of contacting strategies. Let's retry this. I'll start the thread. Same settings, unless we want a civ change. I think a seafaring civ would be a good idea, and we'll only build curraghs to contact other continent before anyone else. That would take a lot of luck, though.

Defenitly Russians :D (j/k)
Maybe military + And industrius = China
WAY to playing in fixed war games, have no preference to any civ what-so-ever

I dont. We'll contact too early maybe. They'll send loads of warrior when we only have 1 warrior.
4 one one island would be good enough

While the first sentence ist true, the second is wrong. I made contact with France, then Russia, and the Viking borders still where out of sight. Both France and Russia were arround german territory.

It is important to explore more in a cycling way though.

The most important fault was that we didn't get enough out of the Mounted Warriors. They are one of the top five UU's, clearly the best for all out warmongering. The loss of the MW army along with an MW stack at Paris was a killer. My fault to attack Paris that early. I should have burned some of the surrounding cities before.

The second was that we delayed growth earlier on. You have to squeeze out a settler every now and then. This might slow down the war against the first opponent, but will make all following faster.

The third one was that we had close to no infrastructure. After the MW era it is better to slow down the advance a bit and build some infrastructure, at least when we saw that we couldn't clean our continent that easily.

The fourth one as to not rely enough the combined arms principle. MDI + Pikes + Trebs are better than Knights + Trebs. Personally I value Muskets lower than Pikes in price/power scaling.

The fifth one, and that includes me, was to not research the fastest path to cavalry.

Let's try another game with the same settings.

If I reread our logs correctly I mentioned after my second log that there were borders already in sight on the left, but I had no units left to make contact and I suggested that the next player should contact them to see what could be traded so they would have been the second civ on the list as the Russians French did not show up at that time.
