I played my round
rushing it wasn't a good idea...
Spoiler :

I hesitated to go for an early religion
decided against it (since I had fishing to research first)
then for it (when hinduism wasn't discovered when I had fishing and masonry), missed it by 2 turns :(

what I have
- 1 city, 3 pop points
- 1 warrior (initial one, no promotion)
- 1 worker
- crabs and fishes
- a small part of the Great Wall
- fishing, masonry, bronze working, polytheism, priesthood (for writing as next tech), agri in 1 turn
- very little exploration done, no copper found

Got some extra time today so figured I'd play it out tonight.
Spoiler :

First check out our starting techs, mysticism and mining. Kewl.
If I remember right only Asoka from our opponents has mysticism in start so..
I'll give it a try to get us religion. Extra happiness and culture can't ever be bad, right?

4000BC, No good reason to move so Seoul is founded on the spot. Those hills make me wonder if there's any copper or iron near..

Even though I'm going for religion I start to build worker first. We could lose few research for city not growing before we get the tech, but I doubt Asoka is going for Hinduism since AIs usually go for Buddhism first.

civ4screenshot0000mr6.jpg

Our warrior Bob starts to explore the lands near us. With help of two goody huts and free maps, he spots ice and tundra at the east, featuring marble, sheeps and three happiness from fur. In the north we find Asoka of the India. He has a neat starting location with few flood plains, grassland and rivers, but still ok production.

3520BC, We got hinduism! yay!
Convert to Hinduism. Decided to go for fishing next to get those fishes and crabs.

civ4screenshot0003fd0.jpg

3360BC, On this sad day, our warrior Bob loses to barbarian Lion with 95,6% chances of winning

3280BC, We reseach fishing.
Set research to BW next.

2720BC, We got Bronze Working. Revolted to Slavery. There's copper west from us.
Start researching The Wheel to hook up that copper asap.

civ4screenshot0005dd8.jpg

Overall, the worker got done and did some mines for us and chopped a forest near the river. First workboat hooked up fishes and there's a second workboat sitting on crabs, so we get them next turn. Created also another warrior and working on second now. It will finish next turn and also the city will grow to 3 pop next turn. The Wheel in 2 turns, was thinking of doing a road to the second city site and doing a settler from capital next to get us the copper city. It has nice three food resources and the copper. Bad thing is that capital of India is just north of it. Oh and the AI score so soon at Prince is scary :shake:

civ4screenshot0007if4.jpg

WAIT! No way! Just noticed that the sheeps won't be in city radious if we settle there!
Maybe one southeast of it would be better. Or the southern grassland hill.
I'll think bout it later if this save gets picked for next round :crazyeye:

'Sorry' for the extra-detailed report, 3:30am and can't get sleep so just had to do something :crazyeye:

Game and report {spoiler includes spoiler!};

Spoiler :
4000BC

I decided to settle on the spot after the Warrior did not identify any better location when moving to the hill. The start provided a small dilemma – Korea does not begin with Fishing (would take six turns to research) so jumping straight to two Work Boats was out.

The option I took was to go after Agriculture and begin on a Worker. The timing was perfect, as the Worker would pop on the same turn as Agriculture and Fishing together would be researched, therefore Worker > Work Boat > Work Boat was the plan. The worker could improve the Corn immediately and build Mines while the two Work Boats could be produced without interruptions to the queue.

The Warrior was sent scouting for Huts and future city sites.

3800BC

Hut > Reveals map to the east.

3720BC

Hut > Provides 77:gold:.

3640BC

Agriculture > Fishing

3400BC

Hinduism was still not discovered, and there’s only one spiritual tribe on the map. I took a gamble.

Fishing > Polytheism

3160BC

Met Tokugawa.

3040BC

Hut > Provides 45:gold:.

2960BC

Polytheism is in and Hinduism is founded in Seoul. The happiness at this stage was not needed and there were no useful religious civics to leverage, so I opted not to endure a turn of anarchy.

Time to look for some Copper and learn to chop.

Polytheism > Bronze Working

2840BC

Met Qin Shi Huang.

2480BC

With a religion in our capital, a Temple could allow for Specialist Priests to be run for The Kashi Wishwanath if that was considered a good use. The +1 happiness from the Temple would clearly allow Seoul to run an extra citizen and support the specialists. Korea is not Industrious and Marble is not hooked up, but with three Mines in the city radius that can be comfortably supported with all of the food, The Oracle is still a feasible option. Only Qin is industrious.

Bronze Working > Priesthood (due in 4 turns)

Settler is out and on the path to a site with a nice spread of resources. The Warrior is doing some fogbusting. The Worker has built Mines and Farmed the Corn in Seoul, and only has chops if he were to continue working the Capital’s tiles for now.

And that's all, folks.

and a save...:

I like this map so far.
Spoiler :

Fishing, B/W , Wheel , Pottery , Ag , A/H (half done)

wkboat , wkboat , worker , settler on the way. Working both seafoods, built a mine.

Eager to get that copper coast spot.

Here is my attempt:

Spoiler :
Lost 2 warriors to barb animals  Got a scout from a hut. Researched fishing-bronze planning on chopping a workboat. However, bronze revealed copper between me and my first target and I had to get it first, so I chopped a settler. Settled in an ok spot. Didn't want to push to far north to cripple econ early. May not build another city, instead just massing axes and going for enemy to north. Next priorities will be to get fishing boats in capital, a second worker, improve some tiles, barracks, library in capital, massing axes for attack.

OK ... thanks all ... I'd say it's "Ding - Ding - Ding" time ... end of round.

Players - please download everyone's saves and let's start voting and/or discussing! If you have more to add about your submission please do so (at your discretion).

If you want to discuss games in this thread during the voting period, please be mindful not to influence voting towards or away from particular submissions, and be respectful to all participants (do I really need to say this?).

Voting

Voting for this round is for the 'least successful' game. How you determine that is up to you, although be sensible about it! In a nutshell; How has this opening helped Korea achieve its conquest victory goal?

Voting is by secret ballot, and is a 3-2-1 system in that;
  • 3 votes for what you consider to be the least successful game,
  • 2 votes for what you consider to be the second least successful game, and
  • 1 vote for what you consider to be the third least successful game.
Please send your votes by private messaging to Pigswill ;) by late-afternoon on Sunday 'American time' - although earlier the better provided you feel as though you've had sufficient time to adequately assess the games. Pigswill will announce the voting outcome so we can play on to Round 2 where later the most successful submission will be voted on. If votes are not recieved by the 'deadline' they may be disregarded.

You can not vote for your own game in any round, however 'great' or 'ratty' that you think it is. :nono:

There is a new rule (as compared to P666-01 and P666-02 a.k.a. "Mice's Rule") that any player can not be selected for consecutive 'trash' rounds. Also, any player can not be selected for consecutive 'strongest' rounds. Therefore the player with the game voted 'least successful' will not be included in the voting for Round 3.

Finally, please note that experience should be a positive one - if you happen to get selected for a 'trash' round understand that this is not a personal thing, but an assessment of how the game's been played relative to others' submissions in the Round. Try to examine why the votes fell the way they did, and look thoroughly at the other games to identify why they were considered stronger, so in future games you can build from this experience. In early rounds luck also can play a large role ('goodie hut' outcomes, barbarian activity, etc).

Cam_H in his enthusiasm to get the game rolling seems not to have noticed that Vra379971 hasn't actually posted his/her commentary or save.

I just PMed vra... Let's see what it takes.
Hey, about the voting... If it's not too much to ask.... Would you guys "elaborate" why does that opening suck on your votes? Maybe our "judge" Pigswill will find a way to turn these commentaries anonymous, if that's the spirit. ;)

vra379971,

My apologies for missing you! Try this rather than 'Manage Attachments' perhaps?

Pigswill,

Good spotting.

Cabert,

Good suggestion.

fbelintani,

Good move to PM vra.

On your question, sometimes players have waited for the results to come in before commenting, and then there's a brief round of "How did you do that?", "Why did you do that?", "I can see why you did that but did you think about this?", "I like the way you did that!" and so on. It's not necessarily a bad thing to do this pre-voting however. Occasionally someone might do a quick statistical analysis on the game and set it out as a table - although stats can be very misleading (e.g. a good score does not necessarily mean a good game). Other times a more qualitative assessment was done of the submissions that identified the strengths and weaknesses of each.

I would also say that opinions are often a lot more divergent than you would think. I've collected the votes in some rounds of P666-01 and P666-02, and have often been surprised at how varied others' opinions of the games can be. Just as the submitted games can be quite variable, so can the voting. It is a very 'inexact science', so to make the point again, the player getting the trash game need not necessarily have played a poor game in everyone's eyes; some past rounds in the earlier games have been full of good submissions, and people were compelled to cast their votes with very little to split them.

If you're not getting the feedback you want during the course of this game, certainly don't be afraid to ask. You might find that the answers are self-apparent though when you look at the other attempts.
