Well, that was quite fun. Guillermo del Toro throws all the tropes of mech anime and kaiju movies into a blender along with his own aesthetic sensibilities. Nothing more, certainly nothing less. Don't expect the Greatest Thing Ever, but I think this will be a Classic, especially with Ron Perlman being awesome as usual. See this in 3D if you can.

I just loved how non-ironically earnest it all was. The characters were directly lifted out of anime--there's the Japanese girl with something to prove (and the haircut to boot), the black enigma leader with the huge mustache, the main character even talks like a voice-over dub. I could see their animated equivalents drawn in broad strokes. And then, again, del Toro knows when to sneak in those campy scenes he loves to make, which allow to feel this world, seedy underbelly and all.

It's pretty great, pleasingly global and non-American focussed compared to most blockbusters. Although I do kind of wish it had retained the Mexican Jaeger called Matador Fury.

The fake Australian accents I can live with as a campy stylistic choice.

I liked it but hated the last bits of the movie (the characters, the science, etc)
Spoiler :
character wise I'm not compelled by the nepotism, the romance was bad, I'm not much of a fan of the scientist drifting especially since a whole 15 minute scene is about troubles of having to find a perfectly good match yet scientist #2 just hops right in and does an awesome kickflop onto a rail to get that sweet drifts along.

which those escalated at the end; it's not a character development movie but the entire "oh gee I'll die fighting this last fight for my adopted daughter who I rescued randomly and whose copilot is now having a romance with" is too much for me.

Spoiler professional irritation :
I know that these movies obviously do impossible things all the time, but I'm really tired of movies using nuclear anxiety as plot points.

Reactors cannot explode, radiation exposure doesn't work that way, WTH is "don't worry nuclears analog" supposed to mean (though that really is a joke; there is plenty of jokes in the movie), etc.

which normally that's not a problem, but both this movie and The dark knight try to say reactors turn into bombs (with dark knight adding the big bad scary "FUSION" ooooh lala)

Despite the stuff that made me go "WTH? Square-cube law guys!" and few other gripes...

Spoiler Hong Kong Battle :
You can't have a wingspan of that size and expect flight! And doesn't the atmosphere get thinner and harder to fly carrying a 50ft tall robot with? You can't flap your wings to low-earth orbit! That's impossible! Arrrgghhhh!

Spoiler Nukes! :
Nuclear reactors don't go up like a nuclear explosion! Seriously, that idea needs to die, next to the Chernobyl scares! I wouldn't have batted an eye if you said antimatter power!

Spoiler Tear down this wall! :
Also, hands up to whoever thought a sea wall was a great idea? Anyone? Anyone? It's like they hadn't even seen World War Z.

Spoiler Helicopters :
If you have helicopters that can carry a 50ft robot... why not put guns on the helicopters and use them instead?

I found this movie to be awesome. I recommend this movie to anyone who wants to see robots punching monsters.
I just wish there was more of it.

Also, I like how they managed to cram in a lot of story in such a short period of time.
Seriously, they made a 2 hour movie feel like an epic, 3-hour movie. I didn't feel like going "When will this end?" in an annoyed tone, I was going "When will this end" in a worried tone as if it'll be wrapped up quickly like Avatar was. And I was far from disappointed; nothing felt quickly wrapped up, it went very smoothly.

Fantastic movie. Absolutely loved it, balls to the wall crazy. Best Power Rangers v. Godzilla anime live-action movie possible.

Spoiler :
I just wish Typhoon and the Russians weren't dispatched so quickly. They should have had at least one glory moment on screen.
