PAE V Patch 2

a creator whose hobby has kept us amazed for many years.

That, and Pie has added to the value of the entire Civfanatics forum! Many users come here, because they suck when climbing up the next difficulty level or look for help with a technical problem, and things like that. They would have no other business to do here. Only mod gems like PAE or Realism Invictus or others following suit keep them coming back. Such mods prove people wrong, who regard gamers as brainparking idiots and think of a forum like this as a big reservation for the bored and the boring.

ok, shame on me and shame on you. let's talk together again in a normal way and go back to topic.

Solutions. I want solutions.

Ok, let's talk about a solution about the fortified upper city. It is a fact, that cities that was founded on hills, that expands to the lower level (farms, river) will become fortified and we can call it a acropolis. We know this word and this attitude from the Greeks.

What if I automatically add a building called Fortification (or citadel) to all nations, in addition a special building called
- Acropolis (because of its Greek name) to Greek and Macedonian nations
- Oppidum for Gauls, Britons, Celts and Germans
- Nuraghe for Iberians
and so on
with +25% defense
when the city was founded on a hill and gets the city status?

ah besides, the Nuraghe is not really Iberian, for those, who wants to claim that to. I am sorry for that, and I want you to turn a blind eye to that, it is again my idiotic decision.

I feel that any settlement that has this defensive structure has to have a limited population. It's harder to get food and water to the top of a mountain. When Rome conquered Gaul, they made settlements on the valley floor possible and normal, as a result greater sized settlements instantly became possible.

So give the defensive bonus an even bigger increase because the trade off is a very limiting city size. The defensive bonus for a mountain top based city should be much greater than walls for instance.

Great news about upcoming patch:goodjob: It might be a little bit awkward to ask anything right after this debate but still... What about this war-weariness of the elite units ? It is cool thing to do for balancing supersoldiers, but it feels wrong( I don't think it should be permanent)

And what about the nations that use upgrades from veterans as their late-game units? I haven't yet played such a nation but I do want to start the Carthage campaign and it already feels frustrating to have your sacred band(soldiers literally raised for war) slowly degrading into common unit.

Maybe i got the concept wrong, would like to hear the thoughts on this one:confused:

Oh, almsot forgot: the last version of the mod is jsut amazing, but I do feel like the overall AI difficulty (playing on emperror) is kinda lower than in previous( I haven't seen a single stack of doom yet :()

If we are trying to start a new PBEM game how long approximately would we have to wait for new Patch, in order to start with the most up to date version?

stolen: k. I find this way of implementing an acropolis also a very good one.

soul: war weariness: that's right, it's against superunits. those units should be joined in a city.

promoted veterans and war-w: yes that's right. think of the age of the unit itself. the unit isn't replaced with younger men, the unit is getting older but stronger by +1 or even +2 strength. just for a short time to be a very, very hard opponent. Similar to a Golden Age, those warriors are specialists and should be used for special tasks. Otherwise you waste them.
And while they get older and more war-w, you are able to train other units to veterans so that they become elite units.

AI difficulty: yes, I am sorry, but that's BTS. for beginners it's hard for experienced players it's ridiculous.

Tigranes: I found a new and very strange error. I don't know when I am able to post Patch 2, because I am very busy these days. I hope, I can manage next week!

I was confused with the war-w and the time period it lasts, but I found your explanation quiet reasonable(gotta destroy Rome fast to not let them get their strong regulars :P).
Sadly AI was always the most frustrating factor in my favorite games :( . I really felt like in my previous runs (prev version) AI had quiet a reasonable armies(the only problem was the foraging so he had ALOT of low hp units) but now... I don't know, I haven't seen a single capable army yet :undecide: This part surprised me .

The +25% tile defense and +25% archer defense already seem good for the "fortified upper city" idea.

I've uploaded Patch 2 in the download thread.

I hope everything works fine! If anything works wrong, please post it here.

I wish you lots of fun with PAE V and its second patched version!

-----------------------------------

I didn't add the upper city issue. It's on the list.

The greeks had a fortified hill with holy temples next to the city as a acropolis. Like the Medieval castle.

Acropolis simply means city or part of a city on a hill and the ancient greeks would easily use the word for any citadel, fortification on high ground. You're just thinking of the Acropolis of Athens.

Horatius only said that acropolises didn't necessarily have holy temples in it.
Any city/city part/citadel/fortification on high ground could go by the name acropolis
Thus, it was because of your holy temple comment that he said that you mostly have the Acropolis of Athens in your mind...

Such a silly misunderstanding :crazyeye:

Great job, thanks from all of us! :goodjob: Looks like it is time to get to serious business ;) PBEM's take only 10-15 minutes of your time per week with 4-5 players, I do not know why people, just like yourself, avoid them with all due respect to short time left for fun:dunno: Imagine winning in your own game in War of Diadochi ... or being eliminated early on :mischief:

Hi Pie, maybe a little bug in Patch 2 - units in forts don't always generate their own borders for that tile, if it's on a 1-tile island. I may be mis-remembering but I think it did before. In my current game that did happen, but then disappeared on a subsequent turn. So you can't sail into it like a city.

Hi Tigranes, I am not ready for that ;) There are some interesting features waiting, I'd like to implement. With them I mix up older versions when I play. So, I'd better read your stories to learn what could be better.

Antigenes: intended. forts can't provide culture anymore. But they are cities, so you should park ships there. the culture feature works now with trading posts (improvement).

Maybe I'm missing something then but I have a fort on a 1-tile island that you can't sail into.

 how is it in BTS? could it be, that it is only possible in cultural owned forts?

shall I add the culture feature with trading posts to forts too?

That was my thought but I thought you'd know better than me lol. But if so, a lot a strategic possibilities are lost, for forward defence (especially against pirates) or way-stations.

The fort has to be on the flat surface and have your culture. One cannot sail into hills.

They're not hills though, they're islands, with beaches. As for game mechanics, you can build forts on hills and sail into them as long as they are coastal and have your culture.
