Pagan Culture

I just played it. Don't have time to report it ATM, I'll do it later today. But I can at least say that it was very interesting turnset, even if I messed it up a bit.

First of all I settled, as agreed, the AG in Corinth.
We also finished the Warships quest and got +2:commerce: for every harbor: :)

Civ4ScreenShot0010.jpg

On the same turn, the Parthenon has been built in a far away land (we missed it for 5 turns.). Also we met the first guy from the other continent:

Civ4ScreenShot0012.jpg

We got his world map and here's the map from the other continent:

Civ4ScreenShot0015.jpg

Doesn't look that bad yet; Justinian and Isabella are most likely Buddhists, Zara Confu. I smell some religious wars .

Next turn we meet Zara, the confu and;

Civ4ScreenShot0017.jpg

Few turns later we also meet Isabella and find out that everybody is at least pleased with everybody else. They are all also keeping up quite well in the tech race and are definitely better than brenus & sal. I tried to bribe them in some wars, but they just like each other too much.

Well, back to our continent; another GA is born and settled in Corinth. We get Nationalhood and we're 14 turn away from liberalism.

Civ4ScreenShot0019.jpg

Now, I could have built the Taj Mahal immediately, but I thought it might be a better idea to wait few turns as everyone was still far from Nationalhood and it might be a good idea to be able to switch to free speech without anarchy when we get liberalism. I was definitely :smoke: as I forgot that we had the MoM and that the GA would boost our research anyway so I could have built it ASAP. No big deal, I thought, and rushed the Taj Mahal in Corinth.
Well, the problem is Justinian finished The Notre Dame 1 turn before us. With the GA-boosted production we would have built it without a problem. :( Well, it's just a game.

The other thing is, I forgot that the Nationalhood obsoletes the Horse Whispering quest, so we built those stables for nothing as we got it before finishing the quest.

At least we got the Sistine and we also showed the roundness of the world.

Finally Zara decided that he doesn't like Isabella that much and he accepted a war vs. her, but for a quite high price.

Civ4ScreenShot0028.jpg

I was thinking about the deal for a long time and finally accepted. It means giving up our tech lead, but Zara was teching like crazy and we had to stop him. This war will definitely slow him down and harm his research more than those tech will help him. Also he now got the "you declared war on our friends" penalty with Justinian, which brought him down to cautious, which means it is very possible that Justinian will join the war against him. As Zara has not met the guys from our continent jet, it is very unlikely that he will trade those techs around.

It's unfortunate about Notre Dame but that one's not as important as Sistine for our goal. Otherwise it looks good. I'm assuming MT will be the free tech from liberalism? We should start building some HA (we can use the GM from economics to upgrade them) so that we can quickly subdue the rest of our continent.

We need to keep an eye on the Izzy-Zara war to make sure that Zara doesn't vassalize her. If it looks like the war is too one-sided, it's worth giving up a tech to stop the bloodshed. If anything, it'll slow down the vassalizing process and if Zara goes to war again, he'll get more diplo negatives from his neighbors. It looks like both Zara and Justinian are growing well this game though.

wow seeing zara @ friendly with Justinian despite different religions... thats something :D

nice progress overall. Next short to midterm goal is conquering the continent, so there's fun waiting for us. Too bad you missed those wonders by 5 / 1 turn(s). The Parthenon actually is a bigger loss but still, everything looks pretty good, as long as you manage to lock the other continent in war.

I hate to do it, but I am not going to have the time to play my turn over the next couple of days. So a skip would be nice...sorry...

The Mausoleum powered GA is amazing. I'm still in love with it even though I rarely get the Mausoleum (something about not getting calendar early ).

IT: I change Athens to a university. I also trade CS+philo to Justinian for guilds and some change.

Turn 188: GP born in Athens  Izzy also wants compass. I decline (in retrospect unnecessary).

Turn 189: GM is born  in Tenochtitlan. They're both sitting outside of Tenochtitlan together with the GSpy. We should probably burn the GSpy for another GA to build the culture infra (I didn't take liberalism yet as I think we'll want it for a rifling sling). We also get a culture event in Athens:

Civ4ScreenShot0046.jpg

Turn 194: Izzy and Zara make peace. At least our bribe hurt their relationship. Justinian is still happy with both though :(

Turn 196 - GA is born in Corinth and immediately settled.

Turn 197 - astronomy is in. I gift aesthetics to Izzy to keep her at cautious. We should be able to trade for her sugar next turn (we're still her worst enemy this turn). I also set up a banana/dye deal with Zara for corn/pig. I also set up a banana/dye deal with Justinian for fur/spice.

Plans: Corinth is now at 170 cpt with the hermitage. Athens and Tenochtitlan around around 70ish... I think a second GA to spam a few missionaries and to build the Jewish/Hindu cathedrals (whatever) in those two cities will help. I would save the GM/Gprophet GA till later - probably around rifling (quick revolt to nationalism at the start of the GA, then revolt to free speech 5 turns later). Liberalism is 1 turn from completion. Zara does not have education (he has MT+gunpowder though ) but check F4 every turn to make sure he doesn't get education.

Techwise, I've set it to banking. We can take the free GM from economics, then beeline rifling. We should be able to sling rifling off of liberalism. The other option is a biology sling off of liberalism. That requires gunpowder -- chemistry -- SM. I've finished the monastery pair in Athens/Tenochtitlan so obsoleting monasteries won't kill our future ability to spam missionaries. Biology will allow some of our northern cities to grow larger (especially our capital) which may be useful. Either option works for me but we should decide before we proceed from here.

I've also put our two military cities back on military builds. Our budding SoD:

Civ4ScreenShot0047.jpg

Saladin does not have engineering yet so we may be able to hit him pre-castles. Brennus does have engineering. I've also unlocked Oxford. We should decide on a city and build it ASAP. Tenochtitlan comes to mind here.

Burning the GP for a GA or two sounds good and getting rifling from liberalism would be really nice too. I think Tenochtitlan for the Oxford is qute clear. I also think we should decide on the globe theater city, which is a bit trickier. My first thought would be Corinth, but the city has some mountains and hills so it will not become that big pre-biology.

Got it for tomorrow. Perhaps the city SW of Corinth is a better Globe city. We lose the culture points, but we don't have to worry about putting artists out of work when drafting. Have to take a closer look at the save later.

Sorry for the double post, but I had a brief look at the save. We should be able to take the continent with 2 military cities and not much drafting, so I think we should build the Globe in Corinth after all. I also think we should go for Biology from Liberalism, since I think we need growth more than rifles (muskets and cannons are good enough for the next war). Seems we have some disagreement here, so I'm waiting for your comments.

I agree that we probably won't need drafting to take out our continent. We have two good military cities that should be able to win most of the war for us (given our tech superiority). The only question is who we go after first. Brennus first will help us shore up our borders but Saladin has a smaller front.

Biology sling sounds pretty good. Just remember to check F4 every turn. Globe in Corinth works as well. It will also allow us to run artists without running caste system (in the event that we need to adopt emancipation).

Drafting would just cripple our economy and it also requires nationalhood, which would give us -100% :culture: and we would also lose some turns on anarchy. As both Rangar and Saladin are quite backward and have a smaller empire than we do, the war should be perfectly doable without drafting.

Emancipation shouldn't be a problem in this game as we will soon have only 3 rivals left so the emancipation  shouldn't be that big. Also by the time the other AIs adopt emancipation we wan't be far away from the culture-mod anyway and :) will be the last tking to care about. I hope we will win before the UN gets up not only because emancipation, but also because free religion.

I'm not sure wather we should go biology>rifling or the other way round. I think it depends on the situation of the other AIs and how far they are from liberalism. I can't load the save ATM and chech the situation, but if getting bio from liberalism is realistic, I would definitelly go for it.

Zara doesn't have education but has philo. That's the closest. The AI generally goes to nationalism before education --> liberalism so we have some time. I don't know if it's enough to get all the way up to SM but liberalism has been banked at 1 turn from completion. If we can get a GS to burn through SM, we should be able to do it - otherwise it will be luck dependent.

In this set I used the great spy for a golden age, and resarched banking-economy (we got GM and I switched to free trade) - gunpowder - chemistry - printing press (light-bulbed with a timely GS born in the capital)-Scientific Method. We can get biology for free from liberalism in two turns :king:

I used the production bonus to make missionaries and build temples all around, while still adding more troops to the SoD. We already had two national wonders in Corinth so I had to build the Globe in Thebes. Thebes is also the only non-jewish city, but a missionary will arrive there in two turns, so it should build a Jewish temple after the Globe.

Nothing for the foreign ministry, except for Zara obviously going for rifling. Perhaps we can arrange a nice war over there? As for our own SoD I suggest hitting Brennus first. A war with Saladin would take many too turns and create lots of unhappiness since his core cities are so far away.

Someone built a settler and I put him near the coast and iron, which seems like a decent spot, but I didn't want to wreck our economy until I knew that we would get biology, so I didn't settle him yet. Some infrastructure is already in place so it should grow quickly once settled.

Looks like our economy is going strong. Biology will help immensely in our ability to run more specialists. I'll post a bit more once I look at the save.

looks good, I think our next goal is rifling>crush Brenus.
I think the question is when do we want to stop our research. We could do it just after rifling, after AL or we could go for :culture: corps & the mass media line.
