Paradigm Shift Reboot! Queen of Culture 2

Why the heck would you research machinery? It doesn't help you getting towards lib... It even stops you from bulbing lib directly...

I need it for Optics. A great scientist is a bad result from now on...

Hmm you have a point. I guess that means the AI will probably find me before I find them then though.

So the suggestion is paper->education->liberalism (take Nationalism if I get it first)?

Then backfill to optics?

Do you think it is worth going for Divine Right, a 3rd religion would be good. I have never teched Divine Right first before except in noble games. I think I have left it too late for this though unless I get another great prophet from Thebes (stonehenge/maoai statues/shrine city).

EDIT: The reason I thought optics might be good is so I could trade some of my culture techs away. I haven't heard much news of Great Generals being born so am expecting a lovefest other continent with a big tech lead, probably Mansa, Gandhi, Liz or something like that ;)

Right, another round will be played tonight I think. It will be another beer round ;)

What better way to go for a cultural victory than supping a cool one whilst listening to my team from the European Capital of Culture 2008 play away at Wigan, the town of the barbarian pie-eaters?

I think everyone has convinced me about liberalism before optics.

Meh, the pie-eating barbs won 1-0 over the school of science. Anyway...

Cathy Queen of Culture 2 - round 6 (to 1505AD): the race to Liberalism

I'll try and get at least one great artist from here

I go for the library quest here, delaying the temple

Thebes is a fine city though, and I have a great artist just arrived

My support city builds a harbour. BTW, I switched to paper instead of machinery.

I settle this artist in the GP farm.

And GPs are coming thick and fast

No-one has built the university of Sankore yet, making me think I could be in for a shout for the liberalism race

I need more workers though

And this city needs health, so an aquaduct it is

State of MY world

I go for the next cathedral (synagogue) here

But I go for forges in the support cities

Another great artist arrives

Cottaging up here

I risk more artists and slow down the sistine

EDIT: Too drunk to post now, TBC.

Right, sober again now ;)

Cathy Queen of Culture 2 - round 6 part 2 (to 1505AD)

Lighthouse here. All it needs to do is build 2 temples.

I go for a chop for the chapel

I'm still low on workers though so build another

This place goes for an aqueduct

Since Moscow is busy building the Sistine I go for the synagogue here

Another forge here

Another Great Artist is born in the GP farm

And I start cottage spamming Moscow

Only 4 turns left on the Sistine after the chop

Paper is discovered

And obviously it's Education next

I reckon I can get the University of Sankore as well if I am lucky, I don't build it in a culture city. The culture cities should all gt a temple, monastery and cathedral so that's +6 beakers, the same as a rep scientist or 2 artists.

First synagogue is completed, this pushes the culture for Thebes past the 100 mark

Since I have a shrine here I go for a market, although I don't have any fur, ivory, silk or whale (I can get a whale when I tech optics)

I start cottaging here as well, mainly to earn some cash for beakers

I complete the library quest. It's just 2 beakers for 1 library though (in Moscow), so nothing great. If I had the Great Lib I'd get a free Great Scientist settled in that city which is alot better. But I don't want no stinkin' scientists!

More and more artists are being added to Thebes

And I dance a happy jig!

Cathy Queen of Culture 2 - round 6 part 3 (to 1505AD)

Jig over. It's back to business.

I can't build the 3rd cathedral yet, so it's a quick Taoist temple, and lots of arty types.

I've farmed up here, hopefully it will produce an artist later

Another forge is started

Taoism spreads in Cowstone City, saving a few hammers.

Angkor Wat is built, so someone has had philosophy for a bit

A lighthouse is built. I go for a quick Taoist missionary so a city with more production can build missionaries too.

I build a monastery here. I can't see much use in building more swordsmen.

More artists are run at Thebes

Synagogue built here, I go for a culture producing monastery.

There's some commerce here so this gets a market as well.

I learn 2 things this round. It's not all peace and love in th world (a great general is born), and I am stuck with my 2 religions since Islam is founded.

Well, I learn 3 things. We are not alone in the World. Kublai can be a bit of a culture vulture as well.

The market is built, harbour next. Also, another Great Artist is born.

Tech situation re: Kublai.

Cathy Queen of Culture 2 - round 6 part 4 (to 1505AD)

I start on the Forbidden Palace here to save some cash. It's not like I will be running State Property in this game ;)

Missionary done, build a temple.

First sightnig of the strange intercontinental boats.

I've built a workshop here to help get the infrastructure it needs.

Education is researched

And it's Liberalism next... Oooh this is exciting ;)

Moscow is fully cottaged up but I'm not working them at the 'mo

I go for a harbour next anyway

Here's a look at the VC screen. Kublai's city has more culture than my top city!!!! We are not amused.

I spread Taoism here since it has nearly finished University of Sankore and has a lot of hammers.

University of Sankore finishes the next turn

It builds a temple next though. Maybe I should have gone for a missionary instead, I was quite drunk at this point ;)

I do this trade with Kublai, it will get me to optics quicker

I go for a forge, in my GP farm, madness. But I still have an aqueduct in the bag.

There are so many farms here I want a granary

And I spread Judaism here.

Another temple

Cathy Queen of Culture 2 - round 6 part 5 (to 1505AD)

Nearly finished the update.

Now I build a missionary

Spiral Minaret is built. It would be more fun if it had a water slide.

Looks like I am missionary spamming now, good plan, I can still hack it a bit whilst drunk.

But then I disprove this theory by starting a universtiy here. Maybe a maceman would be better, my power must be really low.

That's all the continent with my culture, apart from some ice and tundra far south. I wouldn't bet against the AI settling a city there after astronomy though ;)

Another workshop here

And for some reason I am building universities all over. I would be surprised if I actually build Oxford, although it is a possibilty I suppose.

I spread Taoism to St. Petes.

And I get liberalism...

FIRST, in 1505AD. This is why I think BtS is easier than warlords ever was.

So Nationalism it is. I haven't got marble and another civ may have already started building it, but even if I miss the Taj I should get some good coin. Also, it unlocks the Hermitage.

So a bit of a round up before the end of the round

Obviously, I need to switch to Free Speech straight away, and it might be worth going Pacifism as well at the same time.

Here's the save, boys and girls...

You're doing nicely :) Thebes is going to be a monster if you can get some more happiness in there, its a shame you are getting the Great Prophet pollution.

Free Speech and Pacifism are almost no-brainers in a cultural game.

Are you going to continue to tech normally or are you going to go full culture?

Dunno, I may tech to rifles at 0% since I have rep from the mids. Banking for merc after optics seems best, then astro.

I think I need to build up some cash for the full on culture, so getting optics and flogging liberalism seems like a good plan.

EDIT: Happiness isn't an issue what with the culture slider, I need astro and then trade my happiness reources for health.

EDIT2: Points up for debate. Where do I build Hermitage? Where do I buid Taj?

Not much discussion then ;)

I think I will build the Taj in Thebes, I already have 2 National Wonders there (National Epic, Moai Statues) so I can't build Hermitage there. Hermitage in Statue of Zeus/Mids city. Looks like most of my culture bombs will be aimed at Moscow.

I might go astronomy straight after optics, and then go for banking. I really need to get a trade for copper for when I start building Pagodas.

Another plan, something I've never done before, is settle a city on some island (after astronomy of course) with copper, on the copper perhaps, and then create a colony. Can I do that with just 1 city? Can I demand the resource straight away? (I wouldn't mind trading it for some resource or 2 either).

I'm actually just waiting on further development. You only have 2 religions. My instinct on your situation is that you ought to go for Sushi's, even though you said that you wouldn't. Is that part of the game's premises? If so, then please proceed without it.

I'm not ruling Sushi out, there are no rules in my games, except the VC is set in stone, random leaders, normal speed, standard size, no all land maps and barbs are on. It's a lot of techs away though and I have no army, and DaveMcW would have something to say that was an 8 letter word followed by 2 exclamation marks I think ;)

I dunno. I'm not optimistic about your culture speed with just the 2 religions. Sistine GA-strategy also goes somewhat against Cottage-culture hammer strategy. In your place, I would run a "normal" Specialist heavy game using Sistine to lay a baseline of culture early on, going for Sushi, then use Cottages and specialists in very large cities to head straight for culture after Medicine is teched. You won't have to sacrifice tech or production to do this until after Medicine.

Well, I played the next round but am a liitlle tipsy. I'll probably post the update tomorrow. Met another 2 civs, missed the Taj so I have an unknown amount of cash on my way, that's when I ended the round.

I also missed the GM from economics so I'm not sure about Sushi.

EDIT: It's waste of an artist getting Sushi, which is -4000 culture.

Here's some thoughts about the rest of the game:

All your culture cities are coastal and have a harbour. If you can make peace with one or two other civilisations out there, you can get a lot of commerce through trade routes with free market. I know the usual thing to do is get mercantilism, but with all the coastal trade route boosting buildings, and cross continental trade routes, I think you can get a boat load of commerce. Far more than your cities are producing right now anyways.

It's really a shame how the first part of the game went. If you built a couple of wonders instead of a military in the late BC years, those wonders would have been giving double culture since 1000 ad. Still, you're tech leader (I quess) and your culture cities are moving along nicely. Keep it up, and maybe try and get a religion from overseas.

Well I tried not to wonderspam too much. It is a fun game though. Don't take it too seriously. If I get invaded by tanks it will serve me right.

Hey I found the start on of the most interesting ones in a long time with Hatsy doing strange stuff. And to crack the nut with 8 archers in it was fun. If you could have taken her out really soon it wouldn't be as interesting as it is now. Keep it coming.
