I've had this happen to me a couple times. I was at war with a civ. I had taken some cities. I got to the capital but couldn't take it immediately due to cultural defense and my units needing healing. So I parked them there healing, waiting for reinforcements.

Then...

Suddenly the enemy gets a bad random event...too much slavery for them and their city goes into revolt for a turn.

BAM!

I attack immediately and take their city

Just once I thought it was a fluke, but now it's happened twice, so I thought I'd mention that it can be a good idea to park some units by an enemy capital if you can't take it immediately. The AI starts whipping defenders and there is a chance this event can happen for them. If it does be sure to be ready to pounce!

Heh, that actually makes sense from a "realistic" point of view. The oppressed masses rise up against their corrupt leaders when they see a "liberating army" camped outside the city (kind of like the Warsaw uprising).

Do you treat them well after liberating them? :)

I wanted to confirm that strat. I was wondering how to take fortified Archers in a hill-city with Axemen and no Catapults, and tadam, slave revolt. Thank you for the city guys !

There's a chance they might get the Marathon random event though. That gives them a golden age.

AFAIK only the Greeks get Marathon (there was some talk in the BtS forum that some random events are indeed determined by which Civ you play)

From what I read in Kael's thread I don't think this is the case.

Well, I haven't played enough BtS yet (or checked the relevant XML/SDK source files) to be able to say. I was mainly basing the guess on what I'd read in the BtS forum. You may very well be right.

There are not modifyers at all, just all city defenders health drop, not sure how mach?

I thought a revolt only meant 0% defense in the city. Are you sure the defenders' health drops too ?

Bah, I had my units parked outside the enemy capitol, but it was his 2nd city that revolted. :(

Couldn't get there in time to take advantage.
